Brb replaying "Windmills of Your Mind" by both Noel Harrison and Dusty Springfield because both versions slap. The lyrics fit so well. It fits the ending like a glove. It’s their theme song.
"Lovers walk along the shore, and leave their foot sprints in the sand...
Is the sound of distant drumming just the fingers of your hand?
Half-remembered names and faces, but to whom do they belong?
when you knew that it was over,
you were suddenly aware, that the autumn leaves were turning...
... to the colour of her hair."
Also lots of themes of circles, spirals, windmills, looping, overthinking, but the song slows down to mention the woman. It slows down at the end, during the final “in the windmills of your mind.”
It’s a very introspective and nostalgic song. Like thinking about everything, thoughts taking over.
That’s why it won an Oscar in 1969.
