DIY: Kinky/Curly Hair Clip-ins in 30 Minutes or Less
Textured clip-ins are pretty popular right now. They’re an easy way to add volume and length to natural hair. Some of the most popular companies offering these clip-ins are HerGivenHair, Kurly Klips, and Heat Free Hair. After doing my research, it seems like each of these companies produces quality, fabulous looking clip-ins that I personally want to try. I’m “balling on a budget” so spending around $150 on clip-ins isn’t an appealing option right about now so I found a way to try out clip-ins without spending too much money. And dig this, you can create them in less than 30 minutes!
I previously purchased kinky curly bundles of hair from Yvonne Hair on AliExpress. I got three bundles for the low low, I don’t remember the exact amount but it was much cheaper than I’ve ever seen hair for. Shipping was super quick too. Soon after I got the hair I discovered selfit clips that don’t require you to sew anything. Thank the Lord! You simply fold two tabs down to secure the clip to the weft and that’s it.
You can make your own clip ins in three easy steps:
Step 1: Lay out your hair and begin measuring how much you will use for each clip in. Cut the tracks after measuring them.
Step 2: Attach 2-3 Selfit clips to the cut wefts using the simple instructions on the package. If you’re using clips that you need to sew, be sure to sew them with the correct side facing up. It should allow you to close the comb portion when it’s secure on your head.
Step 3: Clip your extensions in your head and braid/twist them with your natural hair to help achieve flawless blending.
Pretty easy right? This is a cool way to experiment with clip ins without breaking the bank. You may not be able to get exactly what you see being sold by the companies previously mentioned, but you can come pretty darn close!
I want to be as transparent as possible so I must acknowledge the pros and cons associated with making these clip-ins:
PROS:
These clip-ins will be measured to fit your head perfectly.
You can reuse these clips on any type of wefted hair.
This method requires no sewing, that means no needles, thread, or wasted time.
Since you won’t need three bundles, you can go half on a purchase of hair with a friend and achieve these clip-ins for a small fraction of the price.
These extensions can make an awesome protective style if all of your natural hair is braided with the clips attached to the braids.
You’ll potentially save tons of money depending on what hair you decide to use.
CONS:
If you’re using the Selfit clip, you’re not able to double up the wefts to make the hair appear thicker because it won’t be able to fit in the clip.
The Yvonne hair can get tangled after a while.
Kinky curly extensions require just as much time and care as your natural hair… It’s not a lazy style by any means.
You can order your Selfit clips for $3.99 here.
