But when it was never supposed to lead anywhere, why the date-night scene. Why "do you have a boyfriend"-scene? A scene they liked so much that they used it both in the gay pilot as well as in ASIP?

was it only too show: "There will never be a relationship between these two"? why dedicating so much effort to it, that they sat down and said: "we gonna need a whole ass scene about it"?

Honestly, six years later and I am having so so much questions

I feel exactly the same and my private pet theory (or coping mechanism) is that Moffat and Gatiss really wanted to recreate the "original Sherlock experience" (as they have stated), so they're also recreating the eight year hiatus. In that case we'll get a new series in a few years.

The fourth season is this series’s Reichenbach fall, the thing that made us, the public, hate the creators and abandon the story. As we expected the original fall they had to create a new one with the same effect of devastation.

In that case I think (day dream) that much of the material for a fifth season is already filmed but that the script also includes the older men. That was what Sir Arthur did. And as the real plot of season four is explained and the plot holes filled, we will also learn that Sherlock did indeed become a great man at last.

Season 4 is entirely John’s own fabrication because he truly does not understand the Holmes family at all, and thinking that they have a secret sister who’s actually smarter than all of them and needs to be Locked Away Forever and can escape and convincingly masquerade as a client and his therapist without Sherlock noticing is entirely in-character for his Bond and horror film-loving ass.

Sherlock writing john's blog makes the "it's gone a bit downhill, hasn't it" comment from the nurse make sense too. Sherlock is simply dragging himself. That one has bugged me so much.

Oh, god, you have just killed me with that. Because, yes! That makes all the sense in the world. Sherlock’s sense of self-worth is nil and mentioning the blog like that falls in that sort of mindset, too. I mean, what was it about the blog that had gone downhill? Or why was it so many people thought it was Sherlock’s blog? Because, he made the last ‘real’ post and then all the subsequent posts we see on the show were made by Sherlock! It’s all making sense to me now and makes me want to give Sherlock a hug even more because it’s all gone downhill because Sherlock’s gone downhill, too.

Bc the whole of s4 is like something John would write but super duper over the top - only with a hotter but colder John (who chases after women and genuinely loves Mary in a way) and who’s extremely mad at Sherlock and blames him for almost everything. And a frankly not very likeable Sherlock.

I wonder if some of s4 might be Sherlock trying to write like John, like he did after the wedding - I'm thinking that blog post was done for a reason. Right after s4 aired, when everyone thought the show took place in Johns "mind bungalow" I thought it much more likely to be Sherlock imagining Johns mind, and I still feel like their personalities are intertwined somehow, like it's not always the same story teller. Maybe I'll have a rewatch clueing for looks. Thanks for making this fun again!

THE  ONE  IN  THE  COCKPIT

Writing down ‘A Coffin for Love’ brought back the memory of a strange little thing. @gosherlocked we talked about this some time ago but then it fell into oblivion again. Until yesterday. This ‘side-note’ brought back the memory and lead to much more than I would have suspected ere I started this post.

(Side note: the fear of ‘John Watson being definitely in danger’ causes Sherlock to come back from his death as well as his second hiatus/exile at the end of HLV … but ‘modern’ Mrs. Carmichael … LOVE … is the pilot of the plane that brings him back)

Modern Mrs. Carmichael is the pilot of the plane that brings Sherlock back. She flies that plane.

CAPTAIN: I trust you had a pleasant flight, sir. (Sherlock stares up at her. She is the spitting image of Lady Carmichael, although obviously wearing a modern airline captain’s uniform. She smiles and nods to him before turning away as the others come on board.)

Appart from LOVE bringing Sherlock back, there’s nothing out of the ordinary here. Yet. But it wont stay that way. Aeroplanes are very important in this story. And the next aeroplane shows up in TFP. All the passengers as well as the crew are asleep on it. The only one awake is a frightened, little girl.

Holy wow, @ebaeschnbliah!!! This just adds to my gut-feeling that S4, and more importantly, TFP, is so much more about getting to the ‘heart’ of what Mycroft has been up to. Thank you for this!!!

Very interesting read, @ebaeschnbliah. And I remember watching TFP for the first time and stumbling over the driver thing. And almost all plane scenes in the show have something in common: the passengers are dead (ASiB), asleep (TST Morocco return/TFP), or drugged/in MP (TAB). Therefore planes have a close connection with conditions in which people are not awake. The only exception is Mary’s scene in TST - in which she is sitting beside a John mirror.  X

So there is strong evidence for plane scenes indicating altered states of mind or things not being real and at the same time connect these to taxis which are connected with the cabbie case as well as all the important moments between Sherlock and John that take place in taxis.

Oh how interesting. I wonder if this can somehow connect to mrs Hudson driving her fancy car with Sherlock as a not sleeping but unwilling and well hidden passenger (funny as it was, it’s nagging me that they made that scene so over the top and expensive). And there’s also the kid that hid inside his car and suffocated - another “sleeping passenger”.

@toxicsemicolon Amy! I have a little something to add to your great analysis that I got from my first 3am read, lol. On the part where you explained ‘Gestus’,

“Brecht asks for a very calculated, ‘produced’ performance (…) So every gesture was important (…) Could the audience tell by the actor’s gestures alone what was happening in the scene?”

I instantly thought that we actually got a whole scene in TAB entirely based on gestures, when they used BSL at the Diogenes. And this was exactly what it was all about; the character himself (John) was unable to make himself understood or comprehend what was being discussed by the use of hand gestures alone! 

Now this scene takes up a whole new layer of subtext with this reading! :)

So I had a thought about some dialog from The Lying Detective, and IF I am choosing to believe that we are getting a fourth episode, and then a 5th Series eventually…I think I found a clue…

But I am also 100% willing to admit that I might be straining my wrist with this reach…either way…game on until Sunday…

So we get this bit of dialog when John saves Sherlock…

People always give up after three…which we did.  Myself included.  But Sherlock got what he needed out of the fourth recording.  And we all would have accepted that, very few of us would have questioned the validity of the recording for a court case…why?  ‘Cause it’s never been about the cases.

Then later, for no real reason (because we’ve all moved on) we get this exchange…

John comes back into the room and asks Sherlock to repeat himself and Sherlock tells John that it’s was technically entrapment, so the fourth recording might get thrown out as evidence.

But they don’t need the fourth recording because the dam broke and now Culverton can’t stop confessing…

My point being…

The audience gave up after the third episode because the third episode was shit.

The third episode established that the show doesn’t work without johnlock (as evidenced by the reviews and the fan reaction)

The fourth recording = The fourth episode

The fourth episode will be inadmissible because people will claim it’s not canon, or that it wasn’t needed, and anything they do in the fourth could have been done in three.  

The fourth episode will establish canon johnlock beyond a shadow of a doubt 

The fourth episode will make way for a fifth series where they writers will be free to keep confessing and confessing and confessing the characters love for one another

Listen…I will be the first to admit that reach is enormous…but I’ve decided to don the gay tinfoil apparel until Sunday…so that’s my contribution…thoughts?

Sherlock: The real ‘lost special’

Okay, this is officially my first post on tumblr because I believe that the following is very important after watching the ‘final’ episode of Sherlock Season 4.

A few hours before the airing of TFP we get this article on radio times:

The important part is the last half of the article:

Okay, nothing new there but then it comes:

‘The schedules for Sunday 22nd January show that BBC1 has something called Apple Tree Yard on at 9pm. But then if they wanted to keep the secret, the Sherlock team would hardly advertise it in the listings would they? And anyway, perhaps they’re saving it as a surprise for later in the year.So is this a possibility? Could there really be a fourth episode of Sherlock series four, a farewell gift to fans?Well, no… not according to Steven Moffat, who was unequivocal when the question was put to him.“It doesn’t reflect the fact that there’s gong to be a fourth episode – for heaven’s sake, what kind of secrets do you think we’re keeping?!“Let’s go home and check. Oh look episode four… the lost special…"‘

Let’s look at that sentence again: ‘The schedules for Sunday 22nd January show that BBC1 has something called Apple Tree Yard on at 9pm.’

So the supposedly last episode of Sherlock S4 just aired and there was no mention of an additional episode before less alone a possible date for it and now radio times publishes an article that links Sherlock to the yet to be aired BBC mini series Apple Tree Yard.

Note that is is the only source out there that makes a connection between Sherlock S4 and Apple Tree Yard.

So what do we get when we search for Apple Tree Yard on the BBC’s website?

Just one episode is listed for 22 January at exactly 9 pm. Even though the mini series is supposed to have 4 episodes in total.

Does the number 4 ring a bell, anyone?

And now have a look at the content description of Apple Yard Tree’s first episode:

I mean, come on, a doctor? An enigmatic stranger? More is at play (’It’s not a game anymore’)? This could be literally taken out of Sherlock.

And what are the names of the two leading actors in this book adaption? (That by the way is described on Amazon.com as ‘suspenseful, erotically charged, and masterfully paced (…) intelligent psychological thriller about desire and its consequences’)

The doctor is played by Emily Watson and the enigmatic stranger by Ben Chaplin.

It may seem far-fetched to assume that they would fake a trailer and pay actors to stay quiet about pretending to have played a mini series when nothing but the trailer actually happened in reality BUT.

But you never know with the producers of this show, do you?

My (very strong) guess is: Next Sunday we are going to see the ‘lost special’ that is going to make history.

I mean, let’s face it. Today’s episode was not ‘television history’.

But hiding a 4th additional episode in ‘plain sight’ by disguising it as an episode of a mini series with a plot description that very well plays into the ‘insane wish fullfilment’ we have been promised? That’s genius.

“I think you draw the eye with disguise,” Gatiss agreed. “It goes right back to the first series – ‘the element of disguise is learning how to hide in plain sight’ is what Sherlock says, and that’s exactly what it’s all about

Yes to all of this.

So, under the premise that there's an alternative ending (or story) I think the important thing is that, as much as I'm sure the creators appreciate the devoted fans, this isn't for us. This is for the casuals. The many. This version is meant to feel off and be mocked so that the one where John and Sherlock get together will feel like coming home for EVERYONE who's been watching.

I think this was their plan from the beginning, and that they're sticking with it. It's not that they don't care about their fans. They just care more about the potential impact.

This is exactly what makes me sure that there’s an alternative take on this. There must be a fourth episode (or more). I know many people don’t feel this way, but nothing else makes sense. Because it’s not CLEVER if this is all we get, but if there’s more - it’s potentially VERY clever. And those men like to be clever. And they’ve thought for years about this.

The whole of Twitter and tumblr are full of gifs with actual quotes from the show and snarky comments. Because it was made for that. It’s made to be thoroughly dragged and mocked.
