The Shape of Water
“The Shape of Water” was one of those movies I always wanted to watch but never had enough motivation to put it on. It has a reputation as the “fish sex movie” and I never heard anything else about the film. It’s a shame that a lot of people only associate this movie with a single scene, because the themes and messages the movie portrays are truly powerful. This movie is much more than a love story between a mute woman and a fish creature, it is about the hardships that minorities face and how difficult life is for them compared to the prototypical straight white man. Elisa embodies the millions of voiceless people who are oppressed each year. The film has so many intricate layers, yet people seem fixated on a single scene. It is crazy that Elisa has taken the fish man as a lover, however I believe that their relationship was presented very well throughout the movie. It is impossible not to root for them as a couple by the end of the movie. It is clear that the “fish man” has feelings for her (the scene where he said “together” and she said no truly demonstrated how complex his emotions were) and that she loved him. I do not know if he is capable of love, but it certainly appeared like he is. My favorite scene in the movie was the scene where Elisa was taken into the canal and and “fish man” kisses her. The entire narrative of a beautiful woman kissing the “animal” to transform him back into a human is completely flipped on its head. Instead we have a scaley fish man kissing the woman. Elisa does not transform into scaley fishwoman herself, but one major transformation does occur. The scars where her vocal chords were severed, begin to transform into gills! I thought that this transformation was amazing. I am extremely happy to have finally watched this movie, and I can honestly say it more than lived up to the hype.

Childish Gambino, the musician alter ego of actor Donald Glover, urged fans at Friday night’s Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival to live in the moment during an emotional speech about his father and rappers Nipsey Hussle and Mac Miller, all of whom died in the past eight months.
Speaking during his Friday set, Glover appeared to cry after reflecting on mortality. “What I’m starting to realize is all we really have is memories at the end of day,” Glover said after mentioning he lost his father, Nipsey and Miller. An autopsy showed Miller, a friend of Glover’s, died in September 2018 from an accidental drug overdose of fentanyl and cocaine. Glover told fans at a concert in December that his father had recently died. And last month, Nipsey, who had collaborated with Childish Gambino, was shot and killed in South Los Angeles.
“There’s a hundred-thousand of you out here right now. There’s a good chance that some of y’all, at least one of y’all, won’t see next week,” he added. “So what I’m saying is, while you’re here, while we’re here, feel something, and pass it on.” // 📸: AP
