Re that ask: this is unfortunately something I've noticed in ffxiv and ffxv spaces both in that people view localizations (localizations that, mind you, get script directing from the main japanese studio) as a lesser canon. And I think that can be attributed to people just not understanding the process of localization. Which is perfectly fine! Not everyone knows how everything works all the time.

But the attitude is very I know better than you for knowing the original text which is not a very kind outlook.

Every time a localization team either adds something or takes something away from the original text they need confirmation and authorization by the studio. It's not like they're going rogue and especially for video games as a medium. There is, for example, a reason ffxiv's localization team switched from an American team to a British team.

Needless to say if you're approaching it as if it's like anime dubbing then that just depicts to me that you don't actually know how localization works for these matters.

I know this is probably too random and late but the reason why gladio's personality is like...that is because the english dub totally butchered it. he seems way more compassionate and kinder towards the other three, and less distant to ignis too. im sorry toxic gladio stans have attacked you or anyone who dared criticize his actions, but everything was based on a version of him that doesn't exist in canon

oof wow yeah this Is way late. i have a much more nuanced view on gladio since I've made this blog but I think I need to point something out here that I still beef with to this day and it's the common view a lot of jrpg fans have (most often american fans, I do not fault japanese fans for having a different perspective on it) and it's the idea that the "english dub" isn't canon.

Localization does not exist in a vacuum and very much has to coexist and get confirmation with the original text and intent. It is very much in of itself an art form and to discredit the american localization entirely and say it's not canon is... uneducated at best. There's a lot that goes into localization and especially for japanese games. Both the american localization and the original japanese are canon. It's not one or the other.

I think it's fair to criticize American Gladio, and I think it's fair to say American Gladio is just as canon as Japanese Gladio. He's a massive dickhead in the localization, and not everyone is going to go out of their way to look at more one-to-one translations.

Sure some localizations are going to change a bit to try and mesh better with the target audience. And FFXV in particular has a tendency of this more so than other games, and this is because the marketting was heavily leaning on an american audiance consuming it and making back money they kind of mismanaged with the game. This and the americana road trip inspiration... It's a bit disingenuous to say it's not canon.

I also have opinions on how some people depict one-to-one translations as though that translator cannot possibly have any agendas of their own but that's neither here nor there. You are getting someone else's interpretation of it nonetheless. Why not just look at the official and canon translation.

so we have the obvious parallels, of course.

hamlet - prince whose father was killed by relative. horatio - closest friend and chief confidant who keeps level head

noctis - prince whose father was killed by relative. ignis - closest friend and chief confidant who keeps level head

and also how the stories progress. hamlet figures out who killed his father after seeing his ghost then he’s taken away. noctis figures out who killed his father, is taken away but it’s the crystal and magic that does that.

of course, there’s parts that are different definitely but the base is there.

now the part that gets to me, always and forever, would be in hamlet’s farewell and noct’s farewell at the end of episode ignis verse i.

(for the sake of clarity i’ll be paraphrasing shakespeare’s writing)

another close similarity wold be in the part when Osric makes his appearance once hamlet returns. there are bits where Hamlet asks Horatio what he’s saying. of course, we can’t forget that in FFXV Noct often asked Ignis for help in political speaking which he happily gave advice to.
