Happy 35th Birthday to Sonic!! (again, cause I didn't finish this art on the actual date >.<)
POV: Sonic found the “Hedgehog Only” sign and took it literally:
saw your other ask about Minato's fics and came here to say
THE FANDOM (just me, really) BEGS TO HEAR YOUR INTERPRETATION. No, but seriously, I'd love, love, love to know your character interpretation of the Yellow Flash! I find him a somewhat complex character to write for!
IF, of course, you want to share <3 If not, please ignore Koko! 🤍
A horrible thing to ask me because I'm terrible with words (and I think my drawings speak for themselves much better than I ever could), but I can certainly try my best 😂😂
I also want to say that all interpretations of his characters are valid and people are, of course, entitled to portray him however they please (such is the magic of the fandom!!). My interpretation of his character is not better or worse than any other.

Chapter 615's title is "The Ties That Bind", a saying which comes from the Christian hymn by John Fawcett.
Hinata's words here (explaining Neji's last words) are just spelling out the meaning of this saying and its source hymn: that we're all in this together. Naruto as a series is not just about Naruto as a character but how he inspires others to believe in the vision he has for this world. He's described as a trailblazer, someone others want to catch up with.
We all know the various narrative elements that weave together in Naruto's story to reinforce his vision: dreams of peace, the valuing of your comrades, fighting to protect instead of to hurt, the Will of Fire, legacies and the hope for the next generation, and sacrifices out of love. Characters around Naruto will live out these themes in order to impress them upon him. Neji is an influential example of this, and by dying as he does, when he does, becomes the poster boy for it.
This is why I like the phoenix imagery for Neji that comes after this. Not just because it ties into his bird imagery, but because of how it ties into the 'there is no death' aspect of the hymn: "But we shall still be joined in heart, / And hope to meet again."
"Neji's will ..."
The narrative synergies of it all are, of course, why Neji makes for such a good choice for someone to die here. It just wouldn't have worked the same way with anyone else. I don't say this to mean "it is the only way Neji's story could have gone"; as he fought against a sense of fate's doom, and as him dying as his father does seems to reinforce this, I would hesitate to label him unavoidably doomed by the narrative instead of just, er, mildly doomed by it. As I've said before, if this was Neji's story, and not Naruto's, it could have easily gone very differently, but that's not to say the threads here don't make sense.
Neji being this essential linchpin figure of the manga and Naruto's life story could have been done better but I do like it and the sense of his undying legend, maybe most famously relevant to the protagonist of the next series being named after him. I also think Hinata seeing her 'big brother' as a perfect representation of everything she loves about Naruto is very sweet; similarly, I think it's touching that Naruto reaches a new state of understanding -- (how we qualify advancements in a sage technique) -- from Neji, and that Neji was the only one who could do that for him. This is the synergy of their narratives.
There's this specific way the anime uses Neji as a spirit guide for Naruto that I think is interesting, having him show up before Naruto's fights with Sasuke as a concrete manifestation of Naruto's abilities to save others from The Darkness.
In this way we see it reinforced that Naruto could keep the faith of saving Sasuke alive because of Neji's kind words for him about the power of Naruto's compassion. I really don't think you can overstate just how important Neji and his words are for Naruto -- how much Naruto values him, as I also discussed in this other post.
It is, at the end of the day, a very simple and beautiful message that love and community are the things that save us, and those who best symbolize this will live on forever in our hearts, and how this chapter really establishes how well Neji represents this core theme of the series because compassion, love, sacrifice, and integrity are so essential to him as a character.
I’m somewhat new to your page, but I just wanted to say I appreciate your tag blurbs and general commentary on the conclusion of nejj for the war arc— even though it has been years YEARS years, if I think I too much about it, I genuinely cry loooooool. so this sounds so super funny but it’s been really helpful for me as it’s getting me to see his death just a little bit differently, esp when it has always upset me for so long. You can never stop a person from feeling too strongly abt their childhood first favorite character in a giant ensemble shounen anime, I guess!
"You can never stop a person from feeling too strongly abt their childhood first favorite character in a giant ensemble shounen anime, I guess!" Very true haha, me with Neji forever. (Sidenote that my first shōnen was Inuyasha and my favourite from that was Kagura. Maybe I'm cursed.)
Really, Neji's death was upsetting to me and I've cried plenty over it too, so I get why it's upsetting for other fans. It's an upsetting death. He was eighteen and a good guy and it's tragic and there's no writing where it isn't tragic. Life is tragic -- this is fine. It hurts, but it's fine.
I also know that the extra tragedy of Neji's story, that he was a living under oppression and the resolution of this aspect of his story is vague as it feels Kishimoto provides two different options: Naruto's "You were supposed to change the clan" and Hiashi's "Main and branch are now fighting side by side" ... I don't think these statements contradict each other but I do think we get very little concrete confirmation going forward. This feels like a disservice to Neji because though he was his own person outside of the clan and I think his death is about him as a person, his story with his clan was still very important to him and if it isn't respected then all the honouring he gets still feels like it's missing a big piece of the picture. This is more frustrating than him dying in general. So again, I get it.
Personally, I do like to look at the whole context, the things that work and the things that don't about Neji's life and death. Not just because I love Neji and I want to be more than just upset when I think about him, but because I love stories and storytelling. I think stories help us understand ourselves better. Even when those stories disappoint us. Sometimes we have to challenge our own discomfort, and sometimes we have to imagine what we'd do differently. That's great for our creativity if nothing else!
Anyway, this very long ramble was just to say -- I'm glad my thoughts have helped you in any way with this. We all love Neji here and I want this blog to explore everything about him, the good and the bad, but to ultimately be a celebration of this beloved character that we can all share in together. ❤️
