A new species of Himalayan skink of the genus Ablepharus (Squamata: Scincidae)

SUMMARY
In the highlands of Uttarakhand, northern India, herpetologists discovered a small yet striking reptile — the 𝗙𝗶𝗿𝗲-𝗯𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗲𝗱 𝗚𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱 𝗦𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗸 (𝘼𝙗𝙡𝙚𝙥𝙝𝙖𝙧𝙪𝙨 𝙛𝙡𝙖𝙢𝙢𝙚𝙪𝙨). Described by 𝗔𝗻𝗱𝗿𝗲𝘆 𝗠. 𝗕𝗿𝗮𝗴𝗶𝗻 and collaborators, this species glows with fiery orange-red and yellow tones beneath its body and tail. Genetic analyses revealed it to be a distinct lineage within the 𝘈. 𝘵𝘳𝘢𝘨𝘣𝘶𝘭𝘦𝘯𝘴𝘪𝘴–𝘈. 𝘭𝘢𝘥𝘢𝘤𝘦𝘯𝘴𝘪𝘴 complex — marking the 𝟳𝘁𝗵 𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄𝗻 𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗰𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝘼𝙗𝙡𝙚𝙥𝙝𝙖𝙧𝙪𝙨 𝗶𝗻 𝗜𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗮. Found at elevations up to 𝟯,𝟯𝟬𝟬 𝗺, these resilient lizards bask near snowfields around 𝗖𝗵𝗼𝗽𝘁𝗮 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗧𝘂𝗻𝗴𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗵 𝗧𝗲𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲, the world’s highest shrine to Shiva — whose symbol of fire inspired the species name 𝘧𝘭𝘢𝘮𝘮𝘦𝘶𝘴.
