Is it true that agave syrup is actually not vegan at all since it potentially endangers long nosed bats?

Agave syrup/nectar isn’t very sustainable, and is particularly bad for bees and bats. It can be farmed sustainably, but like palm oil you can never be sure. However, it is vegan in that it isn’t an animal product and does not require animal exploitation or death. If every unsustainable product which may cause problems for wild animal conservation were considered not vegan then almost nothing would be. Oil, sugar, coffee, tea, any crop or fruit sprayed with pesticide, paper, wood, rubber, plastic- all of these items cause environmental harm and therefore harm to animals. Drawing a distinction between agave nectar and any other luxury cash crop is arbitrary at best.

Agave nectar is an unnecessary item realistically, so I don’t eat it and you shouldn’t either if you can avoid it. But it is still a vegan product. We need to be really careful to not move the goal posts for what counts as a “real vegan” so much that we end up making veganism completely inaccessible.
