People are constantly debating how much physical violence against children is acceptable. Some say that hitting a child with your hand is acceptable but not with another object. Some say hitting a child with a wooden spoon or a belt is acceptable as long as it doesn't leave a mark. Some say that leaving a mark is acceptable.

So when an abusive parent does cross the arbitrary line and does something that even most spankers would consider abuse, the child has no way of knowing that. They don't want to risk calling the police, having the police dismiss it as "discipline", and having it get worse.

The only way to prevent that is if the acceptable amount of violence against children is none.
