Hüsker Dü live, 1985 (?)
This performance was recorded shortly before the ambitious double-full length “Zen Arcade” was released in 1984 on SST.
This Husker Du show is almost certainly the preeminent live document of them during their “Zen Arcade” phase in trading circulation that I’ve heard. This performance is also one of the most commonly circulated Huskers shows out there. This soundboard recording isn’t perfect, but the band’s performance is enormously sweltering. Mould’s fervent vocals are equals parts talking, shouting, and singing. His masterful guitar work is laden with feedback that it’s a striking jolt of cacophony. The only word to describe Grant Hart’s drumming on this recording is excessive. Greg Norton’s straightforward bass playing (and Rollie Fingers moustache) rounds out the sound.
John Clegg plays saxophone on “What’s Going On” and “Drug Party”. He was a jazz musician who was on the periphery during the early days of Husker Du. He worked at a record store with Grant Hart in St. Paul and would occasionally jam with the band. Clegg’s saxophone wail adds a psychotic edge to these two tracks that adds to already existing sense of sonic supremacy.

This mix should not be considered anything other than a selection of songs by the Fall that I like a lot. It’s not a ‘hits’ collection, and since I do not include anything from the ’90s at all, it’s certainly not a career retrospective. That said, if you are not familiar with the Fall, I think this would be a pretty good introduction. Also, please take note of Mark E Smith’s stage banter at the beginning of the live version of “Cruiser’s Creek.” It may be the greatest bit of stage banter of all time.

Meat Puppets - Derrick Bostrom
live @ Nino's, Tucson, March 1984
1983 "collage" art made from promotional material. Hüsker Dü played this show on their way back home from LA after recording their Metal Circus record with SST in LA. They had just played Tucson a few weeks earlier, on their way out there. Thats what made Tucson such a hotbed for touring bands: we were 8 hours east of LA on Interstate 10, plus we had endless friendly floors to sleep on and most important of all The Backstage could be booked so easily. Again, only about 30 or 40 lucky people were at this show.
Here's a complete recording of the performance that night (including a track by opener Conflict).
