Spock’s ears appreciation post.
so uh --- i did not catch up over the weekend. i suddenly became aware of the engineering career fair that’s happening tomorrow so the past few days have been a big flurry of activity to get ready for that. i also have two tests this week --- so we’ll see how things go, but i’m hoping to get some stuff done wednesday or thursday !!
{May he live long...}
Téttares didn’t know how long she’d been on [this] world, [this] world had no name. She’d come here through her race’s portal technology, which the child didn’t have access to in order to duplicate, track, or summon.
The stars were different, she didn’t see any of the constellations she knew. They weren’t here and that was the only comfort Téttares had. They didn’t exist in those stars, finally, she was alone.
But she would make those stars hers. Hers.
The air was clean, after it rained and became cool the air smelled like pine but the child hadn’t been able to find what produced the scent. She had done a typical thing, found a cave because it felt safer and began to collect things she deemed useful, a flat stone that acted as a place to set food or small pulp beetles would appear quickly and crawl all over her findings, picking at it. The beetles tasted like sour dirt. She gathered wood and had a modest pile in the corner of her cave. Being outside constantly… was the pits to a child who had been inside almost her entire life and the magic of the experience had long ago faded into frustration and daily survival.
She thought, still, this was better than where she’d been before. This world was kinder and it played no tricks. It was honest and severe, instead of severe and insane.
But she’d shed weight, days ago she’d stripped out of her filthy tunic and armor pieces and bathed in the crystal cold water, it took her breath but she’d committed to it and noted how small her wrists looked, bony knees, and stringy muscle. She thought she’d been doing well out here but she seemed to be dissolving. She knew the last time her father had measured her she’d been four feet and inches tall. A runt.
Hyper vigilance paid off, no longer consuming her mind with shadows on walls, it was set free in this forested world. She’d begun to keep a mental list of familiar noises. This world was full of creatures and some shook the earth when they walked (Téttares stayed in the cave when she felt any vibrations in the ground) but nothing had come around the cave, though she wasn’t afraid. A part of her hoped an animal would dare because she’d kill it and eat it and try to do something with its hide, maybe she could figure it out. Days rolled into each other. Became days she wasn’t hungry and days she was very hungry.
Téttares knew it was important to remain healthy, no injuries, and consume as much of this world as possible like a black hole, she’d taken to trying to eat anything she could catch and did so with a blank utilitarian commitment that would have left most gagging to observe. So far, she hadn’t made herself ill. The thought didn’t cross her mind, that she could eat a bug or berry and poison herself.
She heard a new sound, it stilled her. Something sentient. Someone.
Her private world broke. It was no longer safe. The stars had been taken back.
Téttares snarled, a feral disconnect clouded her single amethyst eye and a lack of care if she was heard on the approach. She was a warrior. A warrior! If this alien wanted to fight. She was blank in her head. Transfixed the child went after the sound, stalking low, she tried to keep her fields from flaring but had difficulty controlling it. Adults could control their fields and usually adults controlled and monitored their children’s fields.
But you are your own now, Téttares thought harshly.
The child came into view first and with aggressive, low body language, stalking. Her dark skin had deep olive tones but was marred by an old injury that claimed one whole side of her face. Repeated clawing and pulling left her skin ruined from above the brown to beneath her jawline, below her eye and over her cheek was thick as bark with scars, textured by confused skin. The eye had been lost, skin healed over the hollow socket like a natural eyepatch. She had weapons. Two firearms of alien-make, a sword in scabbard against her side, and a large dagger in its holster mounted against a black boot. The child’s outfit was entirely black and without symbol or sign of faction, not a single scribble of alien words, plain. A tunic covered by light armor pieces, the thickest a hunk of black metal fitted over her chest. Aside from her face she was covered head-to-toe by tall boots, long sleeves, pants, gloves. Her hair was lavender, near pastel, cut short but with two severe straight daggers which hung like tassels before each ear. She’d been cutting it with her dagger on her own with no mirror to keep it from being long, she hated long hair, and had no idea it was so choppy and scruffy looking.
Small immature fangs revealed in her searching snarl, she was looking for [him] but had turned the ruined side of her face towards him, looking in the opposite direction.

Over the course of his time aboard the Enterprise, Spock has been thrown into more unusual circumstances and situations that he could have imagined were possible. Time travel, encounters with creatures from distant planets, brushes with parallel universes --- this time is different than any he has faced before. He is on an unknown planet, but that is not new. All he has to work off of is his own intelligence and experience, but that is also not new. What is new --- what does make this situation more dire than many he has faced before -- is that he is facing it alone. While he has his communicator securely at his belt, it has been inoperative since the moment he woke on the ground under an outcropping of rocks. He does not have a phaser --- but if he did Spock believes it also would not work. There is no back-up --- there is no away team behind him, his captain is not here, and there is no way of finding out where he is --- or where they are.
As ever, he evaluates the situation with logic, calculating each variable into the equation of what is to be done. The first step, therefore, is to ascertain if there are any settlements or cities nearby, as well as if those settlements may offer him aid in returning to the Enterprise. There is unlikely to be any such structure where he currently is --- there is little here besides rocks, spiked grey-green plants, and silver-tinted sand. It shines as he walks across it towards the blur of brighter green on the horizon, like and yet unlike the sands of his home planet.
His uniform is dusted with shimmers of silver when he reaches the trees, the shade a welcome respite from the heat of the desert. The air is cooler here, the crisp scent of pine and juniper heavy on the slight breeze. Spock breathes it in as he continues walking on, his thoughts straying to the Enterprise and her crew. It has been nearly four hours since he found himself here --- his absence will have been noted, he is sure. But while he knows Jim will not hesitate to begin searching for him, Spock knows he cannot rely on that for his rescue. He must actively seek out a way back --- it is the only way forward.
And then a sound reaches him --- a low growl, the sound of soft footsteps. Instantly, Spock moves: takes a step to the side, turns, and puts his back against the broad trunk of a tree. The relative silence of the forest has resumed; the sound of insects and wind through light branches. His eyes sweep his surroundings and he circles the trunk --- and then pauses. There, nearly eight yards away --- a humanoid figure is standing. The pale sunlight filters across her --- Spock believes she is a her -- face, revealing the side of her scarred face. Like him, she has no weapons --- but despite her short stature her stance indicates she is not to be underestimated. But at the same time, he cannot remain here, and she is the first sentient being Spock has seen since he woke.
He steps out from behind the tree and begins to walk towards her.

Spock + Science Blue
They are going to die.
Maybe not immediately. But they would.
Jim glances at Spock as he moves, and he is about to move after him, his feet are already turning, before the cat-thing lunges at Spock. Jim hollers, instinctively bashing downwards with all the force he can muster; his branch glances off the shoulder of the cat-thing, though it did get the cat-thing’s attention. The captain pauses, branch held out in front of him: his eyes flick between Spock, the huge claws, and the cat-thing’s face.
He can’t fight it. Spock may be able to, what with his enhanced Vulcan strength, but even then—
“We can’t outrun it, Spock,” Jim hisses, waving the branch in a fluid motion, watching the cat-thing’s many eyes keep track of it. It doesn’t make eye contact, and Jim’s sweaty palms itch against the rough bark.
“Agreed.” They cannot outrun it, and even if they could --- where would they go ?? They are searching for a cave they do not know the location of, and even if they did they have no guarantee they will be safe there. It would be easy to dismiss this venture as fruitless --- to give up and resign himself to their fate, but Spock refuses to give up so quickly. There is always another way: it is just a matter of finding it.
“Captain --- that appears to be confusing it. We may be able to dissuade it from attacking.” There are some animals that can be frightened off by large movements or loud sounds --- there is a chance this is one of them.
Although he is sure it looks ridiculous from an outside perspective, Spock mimics Jim’s motion, waving what is left of his branch back and forth in front of him. As he does so he moves closer to Jim: if they are intending to appear more strong than they really are, it is logical to appear as though they are a united force that cannot be separated, rather than two separate and easily taken individuals.
“I do, thank you,” she responded, looking sideways at him. “How did you know I’ve been here for awhile?” she asked, quirking a brow. As far as she knew, she had been alone the entire time until Spock walked in.
“You have been off duty for two hours, and I did not see you in the mess hall. Prior to coming here I went by your quarters, where I was informed you had not returned there since coming off shift either. Therefore it was logical to understand you had come here, and have been here for some time.” He tips his head slightly to the side, pausing. “Am I incorrect ??”
Happily he listened to Spock’s words, always loving the exact way he spoke and how eloquent he was about everything. Sometimes he wished to be able to speak like that as well. “I can only agree on that. We’ve a wonderful crew with nearly no disturbances in their cohesion and they’re all talented and eager to be on this mission as well. Couldn’t imagine a better suited group for our aim.” Generally just repeated what the other had already said, but he felt like that towards each of his co-workers.
“My family is always on my side up there in Space, Spock.” Jim smiled slightly over that, his thoughts immediately going towards his remaining family which was essentially no one. “Perhaps I needed some time to myself, but there’s still some days left to look at the sights of this planet, if you’re up for it.”
Spock only nods at first --- he understands what Jim means. He would say the same is true for himself: while he may have no relation to any of the crew of the Enterprise, it would be accurate to say he finds himself more comfortable in their company than in any other. It is they who accept him and it is with them he has found a home, in the far more human sense of the word. They have, in fact, become his family as well.
“I understand.” he says, but does not elaborate further. Right now he does not feel the need, nor the desire to disclose such an emotional thought, even though Jim has just done so himself. ( Jim is human and you are not, he reminds himself. )
He nods again, a little more quickly this time. “Of course. The matters to which we must attend at the base are decreasing, and therefore our free time is increasing. I would not be at all adverse to spending some of that time...sightseeing with you. I did not take the time to do so when I was attending the academy here, and would like to remedy that.”
It’s goddamned fascinating, as much as he hates to admit it. If Leonard had it his way, and if conversation with Spock didn’t feel like a game of Russian Roulette with bamboo under the fingernails and being naked under a microscope as options, he’d ask more questions.
Hundreds of them, honestly. Empathy was important to a doctor. You had to care for your patients to try and heal them to the best of your abilities. But to feel what they feel?
That was a slippery goddamn slope right there.
(And a damn good reason to stop chasing this fool idea. There was no cure for what ailed him, especially not by the hands of the Vulcan across from him. So why let the guy root around in there and stumble across thoughts not meant for anybody else to see? Especially about that very same Vulcan.)
“That’s a hell of a burden right there.”
It’s as close to an apology for bursting in here and taking up Spock’s time that was going to leave his lips.
Leonard plants his hands on the table, smoothing them out against the material in something that might just be a calming gesture.
“I appreciate the explanation, Mr. Spock.”
Spock nods, his gaze returning to meet that of Dr. McCoy. He isn’t sure if he detects a note of dismissal in the doctor’s words --- if his last statement means he has gotten what he needs or has recognized Spock may be unable to help and therefore is ending the conversation, but he finds himself hoping it is not the case. It is not often that he has the opportunity to converse with Leonard when they are not on duty, and it is something he finds...pleasant, perhaps. The feeling is certainly a positive one, in any case.
“You are welcome, Leonard.” he says, removing his hands from the table to clasp them in his lap instead of on its surface. “Perhaps one day you can explain to me some of the experiences that are more unique to humans. As you are fond of reminding me, there are many with which I am still not familiar.”
The words are some that have the potential to be taken the wrong way --- as hostile or accusatory rather than the closest Spock comes to fond teasing. Therefore he inflects his voice with the slightest amount of said inflection, and the barest hint of a smile tugs the corner of his mouth upward.
“You are welcome, Spock first commander. I got to know all the others, but you I know the least of all and I would not mind doing what humans call smalltalk with you sometimes and this seems to be a good opportunity to do so.” Jaylah got on her knees to look under the bed to see if there were any clothes. She´d often seen in the quarters of some others that there were clothes under the bed, so maybe Spock put some there too. But nothing. She stood up again and looked at the vulcan. “Yes, it is frustrating sometimes. I have never sat in a tree with one of the crew, I do not understand why she says it.” Jaylah moved to the laundry basket and picked it up. “Anything else that is for the laundry?”
Spock is not inclined to engage in ‘small talk’ himself --- it is a very human activity, but it is not without its benefits. He has observed it being used as a way to pass the time or distract from a tense situation, but also just to get to know an individual a little better. In any case, he would not be adverse to talking more with the newest member of their crew. “Indeed. There has not been much of an opportunity for us to share in small talk, but I too would not mind the activity with you.”
His eyebrow raises even further, a combination of surprise and resignation crossing his face. “Does this song go on to imply you engaged in romantic or sexual relations with said individual ??” he asks. “I too have been at the receiving end of such a song --- as I understand it, it is a method of teasing.”
There is nothing else for the laundry, but he accompanies her as they exit his quarters. “No. However, I too have no responsibilities at this time. If you wish, I could assist you in this task and we can continue our...small talk.”
Bracing himself for the worst of events, that somehow everyone upon the other side of the door would pelt them with food as soon as the doors opened, Pavel pushed into the room. Everyone seemed far too occupied to even pay them a glance. Sticking close to the sidelines, he smiled lightly at the praise, easily finding the stairs he had hinted at before.
Code typed in, door opening for them to enter and closing behind them, Pavel continued to lead. “Thank you, Commander. I am sure you would have come up with something just as efficent by yourself.”
The chaos behind the door has not lessened at all since the last time Spock looked in --- if anything, it has escalated. Voices are raised, throwing shouts and taunts and laughter along with the food that’s flying across the room. Some of the crew have grabbed trays and are attempting to use them as shields and others have formed barricades out of the furniture, from behind which they can attack. Many more, however, have thrown their own protection to the sidelines in favor of inflicting maximum damage. Spock is not at all surprised to see Kirk is one of these --- shouting orders and taking command of the team that has seemed to emerged behind him.
The relative quiet of the passage beyond is welcome, as is the fact they must no longer duck incoming projectiles. “Indeed.” he agrees, following after Chekov. “Although if I were by myself I would likely not be involved at all.” There is a hint of amusement in his voice, although his expression remains steady. “We should replicate a supply of food to start with, so our initial attack is successful.”
best of kirk and spock in stb
behold i am online !! i was actually on for a bit earlier and got through a few drafts, so those will be in the queue for tomorrow.
however, i’m mostly just here to update you all on the current ‘lydia battles school vs. roleplaying and roleplaying loses every time’ thing. i’ve got a test and a paper due next week, and while i have planned out exactly what i need to do for each this is not going to be the week where i come back and catch up on everything.
i will be on and doing stuff, but i’m only going to reply to stuff as i have time + the muse for each thread. sorry again for my absence!!
