It struck Robert over the summer how tall the boy had gotten. Even if it had been awhile since he thought of him as a kid the same way he did Crish and the twins, little things still caught him off guard. His height, those eyes that were so much like his mother’s in the way he watched the world around him despite damn near everything in his appearance making him seem like a scrawnier, younger Joseph. Only, Chris wore his hair differently–not just from his father but from what seemed fashionable to kids his age.

Yet the look suited the old soul quality that the young man had about him for as long as Robert had known him. That didn’t change one bit though the boy who he used to pick up with one arm did. He was no more talkative with the rest of the world having grown quieter instead, somehow. Robert glanced toward the boy’s parents and assumed they were at fault. Maybe he was too, but Chris still talked to him openly enough. Still was close as anyone could be with their mom’s drinking friend and their dad’s ex lover.

Maybe closer, which was nice.

Chris had become like the son he never had over the years. Perhaps that was why he was constantly caught off guard by the idea that the boy wasn’t a kid any more. That he was damn near his own man.

When they are prepared for battle, wizards can use their spells to devastating effect. When caught by surprise, they are vulnerable. The wizard's strength is his spells, everything else is secondary. He learns new spells as he experiments and grows in experience, and he can also learn them from other wizards. In addition, over time a wizard learns to manipulate his spells so they go farther, work better, or are improved in some other way. A wizard can call a familiar- a small, magical, animal companion that serves her. With a high Intelligence, wizards are capable of casting very high levels of spells.
