Life and Lifestyle Advice From The Chairman Of The Board
No matter what nickname used from the above used Chairman of the Board, The Voice, The Sultan of Swoon, Swoonatra, or, probably the most popular, Ol’ Blue Eyes, Frank Sinatra had both an unmistakable voice coupled with iconic songs. While I am pretty sure that Ol’ Blue Eyes was not into D/S, although what happens in Vegas is supposed to stay in Vegas, there are many pearls of wisdom included in his songs. I am not sure what planted My Way in my head today as an earworm, there are three nuggets from the tune that can apply nicely to this lifestyle.
The Sultan of Swoon tells us that “Regrets, I had a few but then again too few to mention” and that is a great tip for both life and this lifestyle. I know there are people out there who say they are living or are going to live life without regrets, or regerts if you are eating a Milky Way. No matter how we slice up our journey here, there are going to be a few things that we might have wished we had handled differently, took the chance on, or perhaps did not take that ‘opportunity’. While making a regrettable choice is never fun and often even worse when we are forced to admit it to ourselves, everyone will have some in life but I think all of us should do our best to follow the songs guidance and endeavor to keep them in the too few to mention category.
Next, The Voice shares with us that “Yes, there were times I’m sure you knew when I bit off more than I could chew” and what I believe is meant by these lyrics is that we are all going to make mistakes, even ones that our friends warn us about before we make them. Not only is this a great reminder for life that everyone is going to muck things up sometimes but I find it applies to the lifestyle nicely as well. The link to D/S, for me, is so often it feels like people in the lifestyle have the unrealistic expectation that their future lifestyle partner will be a creature of perfection who will never error in their leadership or service. Sadly, this is no true as I know I have made many mistakes, some big and some small, in every relationship I have had from vanilla friendships to lifestyle relationships. This applies to everyone regardless of role in the lifestyle and I believe it is imperative to not seek a perfect partner but find a perfectly imperfect one, or ones for poly individuals, that admits their missteps while striving to learn and grow from them.
Finally, the hook of the song is “I did it, I did it my way” and this is an amazing lifestyle tip. There is so much information out there about how to do or just as importantly not do things in D/S that it can become easy to get caught up in trying to practice things by doing what others suggest rather than following your desires. One of the beautiful things about the lifestyle in my opinion is that everyone can personalize it. Tidbits can be taken from there, borrowed from others, and combined with unique ideas to make it be or not be whatever an individual wants and needs. D/S is not a cookie-cutter that presses people into predetermined sizes or shapes. So no matter how you do it, keep it safe and do it your way.
I am sure that this post might be a clue that I enjoy the music of The Rat Pack and while Frank Sinatra provided the inspiration that caused my mind to churn today, I will share a secret that Dean Martin is my favorite in this group. While Dino might be my personal choice, I hope that the advice of Swoonatra will ring-a-ding ding home no matter if you are in New York City, Chicago, flying to the moon, or anywhere in between. We all should practice the lifestyle safely but our way, own and learn from our mistakes, and endeavor to keep our regrets at too few to mention.
