ive been thinking about this line for a few days and to be honest i think that’s the point

barbie is, at its core, a film about how the unrealistic standards for female beauty forces a sort of absurdity in the everyday life of women

even margot robbie, even barbie herself, can’t live up to our ideals of beauty because they are based on women that don’t exist. women that can’t exist.

literal objects

throughout the film barbie becomes more and more human. she learns what it means to be alive - it means your body ageing, it means feeling unpleasant emotions, it means being messy and contradictory.

women aren’t allowed to do any of those things.

the more ‘real’ barbie gets, the less pretty she gets, because ‘pretty’ is inherently an unrealistic thing. even the most tall, thin, white, conventionally attractive cis women can’t be ‘pretty’ to society’s standards.

in a way, the very concept of reality is gatekept from women. you think barbieland is absurd? try having to navigate the systems of gender we’ve created in our world
