KOPS

We are a team of 5 Master students at Maastricht University working on a PREMIUM project with the iLab Dutch National Police. The aim of our project is to evaluate the learning effect of the KOPS app which is a game developed to help police officers recognize people of interest on the street.

ITS HERE!

After many months of meetings with our awesome group and mentor, and meetings with our client... after all of the achievements and set-backs ... after changing our experiment to fit with new government regulations when a pandemic turned the world upside down ... after a significant number of “Can you hear me?”’s over Skype ... after amounting a very well-filled Google Drive ... after struggling with data analysis and SPSS ... and after hours upon hours of dedication ...

We can finally say ... it’s here! 

We are very proud to say that our project report is finished and we are ready to hand it over to our client!

Ready for the next step

Pfieuw, we’ve finished our data analysis! 

We are now getting ready to write down our conclusions and recommendations.

Since the iLab will most likely be performing this experiment on a larger scale with police officers at a later date it’s important we provide concrete recommendations on what to do the same and what to do differently.

We’ve learned so much while doing this experiment that we feel confident we can provide insightful advice for the iLab!

We will be keeping you up to date with our progress and will hopefully soon be able to tell you we have finished our report and are ready to present it to our client!

As our team is analysing the data, it is very interesting to see graphs formed that can tell us if our experiment actually worked! We can finally, after a few months of hard work, get answers to the question posed to us by our client.

Let’s Analyse!

Today, our last test person sent in their questionnaire! We now have the full experiment data from our facial recognition experiment on 30 different people from 2 different platforms ... first from the app - how long they played, how many questions they got correct, and second from the questionnaire - wether they were able to recognise the correct people. Very exciting indeed!

Our facial recognition experiment is in full swing and our first group of respondents is currently answering our questionnaire! Beginning the final stages of our journey!

Due to the Coronavirus we are unfortunately not able to present our pitch to you in person. However, every challenge has a solution! Therefore we would like to present our pitch to you in this, safe, digital environment.

We hope everybody is safe and healthy and can enjoy watching our pitch this way, while learning more about the progress we have made so far and what we are still aiming to do!

We’re halfway there, and, despite the progress, the most challenging part of our project has yet to come. Of course we are aiming at the most accurate outcome possible by limiting the room for error as much as possible. That is particularly difficult since none of us are particularly experienced in the field of psychology. But who doesn't like a nice challenge???

The iLab created a smartphone app designed as a memory game for Dutch Police Officers, aimed at enhancing their ability to recognize wanted persons in real life! It is our task to research the learning effect of the app. Do you think it’ll work? Feel free to let us know in the comments below.

In aiming to evaluate the learning effect of the facial recognition app "KOPS", we proposed a total of four possible experiments to the iLab. Our first and preferred proposition was approved. The basic idea is that the officers will use the KOPS app for various amounts of time before the experiment. The app will be filled with different pictures of approximately 20 random people’s faces. The officers will then be asked to walk a short route through a busy area. During this walk, some of the people that were shown on the app will walk past the officers. Afterwards, we will evaluate whether the officers recognized these people.

Having dealt with Security Policy of the European Union in my Bachelor and currently my Master program, this project seemed particularly interesting for me. I am convinced, that as a team we will be able to successfully evaluate the learning effect of the app “KOPS”.

Hi Everyone! My name is Carmen Chiaradia, I am 25 years old and am currently doing my masters in International Business: Strategy and Innovation. I joined PREMIUM because I love a challenge and this was perfect as it also pushed me outside of my field of expertise giving me ample opportunities to learn more! I love to dance, ballroom and latin specifically and look forward to working with the team to make this project a succes!

Hi my name is Clara and I am a french Master student in European Law, currently on exchange at Maastricht University. Law is the glue that holds society together, and I found out that it becomes much more interesting when studied in an international context. Pursuing this path, I have also become very much interested in combining law with other disciplines such as psychology and science. This is how I believe lawyers can help design our future society and that is why I am really glad to be part of the KOPS team : to see how technology can improve law enforcement !

Hi everyone, my name is Evelien Korsten. I am 21 years old and from the Netherlands. My hobby is judo and I have a passion for the immune system. Therefore, I am currently doing my master Biomedical Sciences, specialization Inflammation and Pathophysiology. I choose to be part of premium because I wanted to do something next to my study and step out of my comfort zone. I am enthusiastic to be part of the ilab premium team and excited what this project will bring!

I chose this project to apply my knowledge about scientific experiments to a totally different area. In my spare time, I'm a fanatic football player, but I also like to travel. This project is a very interesting one as we get the opportunity to delve into the human psyche and hopefully discover how humans recognize faces.
