I am not the art police, so I'm not here to force anyone to like a song. That being said I think a lot of y'all are assuming Taylor is singing to us, the internet, the general public in CANCELLED! in a smug and bratty way and I believe that is incorrect. She is singing directly to the person who has "been cancelled" and reached out to Taylor for help. She's saying "hey person who has been cancelled and is in need of guidance, it's a damn good thing I like my friends cancelled, eh? Come to my scary post-internet scandal underworld and on the other side of this we will be better for it, sharper, and stronger next time." Again, I don't care if y'all like this song I just think it's being misinterpreted.

I think maybe Eldest Daughter is catching extra flack for being a track 5 when it's objectively not the saddest song on the album, in fact, Ruin the Friendship is pretty easily the only genuinely sad song.

Because I think we've all gotten wrapped in the idea of track 5s traditionally being the "emotional gut punch" songs, and tied that into them all being very sad songs. But I think maybe, we should reclassify track 5s as being the "most vulnerable and personal" tracks of each album. Not only does this better explain track 5 choices like AYHTDWS and Delicate, but it also introduces the idea that the Showgirl album is in fact a wonderful sign of growth and happiness that the track 5 is not sad. It's deeply personal, and is about the act of vulnerability itself, but it is not sad. The happiness here is that Eldest Daughter is a quintessential track 5 song, but a happy one.
