The Princess concentrated as she poked the doted out a pattern on the her pumpkin. She was determined to not only make it look good but to prove to Syaoran that carving a pumpkin was not something that should make him worry.

“It looks great!” Sakura said after turn to look at Fai’s pumpkin masterpiece and giggling. Looking at her own she gave a frown, she hadn’t noticed how off it looked until now. You couldn’t even tell what she was trying to make.

At the girl’s praise, Fai just beamed, shifting his pumpkin to take another look. “I bet Kuro-woof will like it too.” It was impossible not to tease the man even when he wasn’t present.

The mage slid around behind Sakura, leaning forward slightly as he took in the work she was doing on her own pumpkin. “Hyuu~ A gremlin! That’s the Halloween spirit!” he declared, clapping his hands together.

Though on second thought...had she been trying to make a gremlin?

“Yes?” She her hands now dirty from the piles, of the golden grain sands. The smile was return as she got up from her play area. “I don’t think so, I love playing out here by myself.”

While Fai only saw endless desert in one direction, and a city in the distance of another, it was easy to see how a child like Sakura could turn the emptiness into something as simple as a sandbox.

“What’re you playing?” he asked, balancing on the balls of his feet as he let his arms lounge easily on his knees.

“Princess?” he asked, kneeling down with a gentle smile. He had to hold himself back from calling her Sakura-chan. This wasn’t the girl he knew. Not yet, at least. “You’re very far from home, aren’t you?”

A flash of a knife, another chunk of pumpkin falling away to join the rest. Fai paused a moment, knife twirling in idle fingers as a tongue poked out, the mage tipping his head thoughtfully. And then one more carving motion and the man’s lips stretched into a beaming smile.

“What do you think?” he asked, spinning the pumpkin around. It was a simplistic, adorably grumpy face of a dog.
