MESSINA - BALCONI DEL CENTRO STORICO

Subito dopo il terremoto del 1908 che la distrusse integralmente, Messina venne ricostruita secondo nuove regole urbanistiche e seguendo le tendenze architettoniche di allora. Vi fu quindi un fiorire di stili diversi che mutarono durante il tempo necessario alla ricostruzione e che in fondo ripercorrevano quella che era la storia mercantile di Messina, dove i mercanti stranieri che ne dominavano i commerci, avevano introdotto stili e forme diverse da quelle del resto della Sicilia. I balconi di quello che potremmo definire il centro storico, le case e i palazzi ricostruiti dopo il terremoto, ci parlano quindi di un elegante liberty, di un neoclassicismo austero e semplice o di altri stili che richiamandosi a quelli del nord Europa e che accennano anche quelli tipicamente siciliani come il Chiaramontano e il Gotico Catalano. Sebbene offesi dall’incuria degli uomini e sfregiati da fili del telefono, i balconi di Messina ci parlano di un tempo in cui la speranza per una nuova vita fu affidata alla bellezza e all’eleganza.
