“I don’t want the effeminate ones, I want the manly guys … If I wanted someone that acts girlish, I got a wife at home.”
Interesting article on straight rural men who have sex with other men. Some of these men don’t think of their behavior as ‘gay’ because they’re ‘manly men’ who just have oral sex with other ‘manly men’ once in a while.
“As Cain [one of the interview subjects] said, “I’m really not drawn to what I would consider really effeminate faggot type[s],” but he does “like the masculine looking guy who maybe is more bi.” Similarly, Matt (60) explained, “If they’re too flamboyant they just turn me off,” and Jack noted, “Femininity in a man is a turn off.” Ryan (60) explained, “I’m not comfortable around femme” and “masculinity is what attracts me,” while David shared that “Femme guys don’t do anything for me at all, in fact actually I don’t care for ’em.” Jon shared, “I don’t really like flamin’ queers.”
“I go on road trips, drink beer, go down to the city [to] look at chicks, go out and eat, shoot pool, I got one friend I hike with. It normally leads to sex, but we go out and do activities other than we meet and suck.”
Pat described a typical meetup with his regular: “We talk for an hour or so, over coffee … then we’ll go get a blowjob and then, part our ways.” Similarly, Richard noted, “Sex is a very small part of our relationship. It’s more friends, we discuss politics … all sorts of shit.”
“The participants reinforced their straightness through unconventional interpretations of same-sex sex: as “helpin’ a buddy out,” relieving “urges,” acting on sexual desires for men without sexual attractions to them.”
helpin’ a buddy out
I always have such conflicted reactions to things like this. Because on one level, it has an element of genuine tragic-ness to it, that these men clearly feel same-sex attraction, but CANNOT admit that fact to themselves, even in the midst of admitting that they sleep with other men.
But on the other hand, the mental gymnastics that they employ and the convoluted ways they try to endlessly reframe it as being still Hetero™ somehow do have an air of comedy to them, at times. (I mean “bud-sex” REALLY?)

can we please destroy the idea that trans boys have to be masculine 100% of the time to be considered boys??? same thing for trans girls like they don’t need to be feminine 100% of the time either. gender is a fucking made up construct and if you’re a trans boy and wanna wear dresses and makeup?? fucking go for it you’re still a boy. don’t trap trans men into the same toxic masculinity you so violently fight against.
I was working upstairs when I hear one of our baby leopard geckos start screaming. Normally they only scream when threatened, but this particular guy screams at almost everything. Turns out there was a small fly in his cage that was bothering him.
Yes the fly was removed afterwards.

You can’t really say you recognise nb people, if you don’t recognise even the most basic of concepts of being non-binary.
Like, for starter, being anything other than male or female is a good start to recognise, you know? Yet some of you all don’t seem to manage that, gotta have “aligned” now.
And also, basic concepts I’ve seen for years now, apparently also alien to the community? Like what happened to agender, genderfluid, and all of that stuff?
Like, people genuinely talk like your gender can’t be fluid, even if they don’t straight up say it, and also people act like you can’t be genderless..
And just, this isn’t supporting nb people? This is you all scraping the most familiar of the surface, and saying it’s good enough… And you all basically talk like nb people are all either Female Lite or Male Lite.
Like, it’s possible to be multigender, mix of gender alignments, both and neither female and male, being fluid, being completely neutral or genderless… It’s all things. Being nb isn’t just basically binary but a bit to the side on the gender spectrum.
I feel the fact the nb identity is being attempted to be washed down, is exactly why we needed it and labels like genderqueer to begin with. Because people try too much to shove people within binaries and tiny boxes.. And life is much more than that.
This has come to my attention recently too, as a genderfluid person. Genderfluid, agender, genderqueer….they were all terms I was familiar with, some even before the term nonbinary.
I saw and met genderfluid people as a kid before I had a complete understanding of what anything off the binary even meant.
But somehow, there is a rise of ignorance (feigned or real, I don’t know,) that’s causing people to act like they do not know genderfluid or multigender people exist or understand how we work at all.
There’s some disturbing trends rising in discourse circles, and even among nonbinary people there is marginalization happening; I’m witnessing aligned nbs contribute to this behavior for anyone not seen as “male/female lite.”
I feel like education and visibility for nonbinary people of all kinds is dwindling, and new community members are being spoonfed filtered truscum-adjacent rhetoric and knowledge that erases and forgets people who are anything else.
There’s the rise of “anti mogai” which is literal truscum rhetoric with an exclusionist hat so large chunks of people are now thinking its anywhere in their right to question the validity of nonbinary people’s genders, just because they’ve been fed the idea that mogai is evil and mogai invented these genders (as if that’s how it works at all.)
There’s also been a rise of purity idealism inside wlw and mlm communities that I am, without a doubt, attributing to sublevel TERF influence, based on the fact that I’m almost exclusively witnessing DFAB people perpetrate it. People are trying to police nonbinary people out of these communities unless they’re “close enough” to binary for their tastes. Fluid and multigender people are currently not making the cut. And its all wrapped up in a nice little TERFy bow of “men are trying to invade women’s spaces,” and “men and women can’t coexist so your gender can’t be both.”
Its absolutely wild to me that this is what I’m seeing the younger community become, when I was introduced to it immediately with the accepted statements of “everything is a lot more fluid than you were led to believe.” Its like foundations of the community I once thought would remain constant core ideals have been entirely forgotten or ignored.
But yeah, its exorsexist to its core, and binary or nonbinary, exclusion and erasure of people who are anything other than “aligned nonbinary” is bigoted and nbphobic for anyone to participate in.
I agree with all that’s said here and yeah I’d like to add something.. At the earliest of the 2010s, maybe before then.. I knew people who were bigender, or genderfluid, and I didn’t even think that I was trans back then.
This whole concept of this solid “non-binary” identity, where everyone is demigirl/demiboy but also not really demigender somehow, it’s a very fresh idea I feel.
I personally did of course see em all together, but people were very specific about being genderfluid or androgyne or specific labels, and used nb as more an umbrella. Now it has become an identity with only one way to be: Basically binary.
The whole narrative of aligned is so new, and not really ingrained in the community at all.. I would say that the nb community has been far more about being “all over the place” than “this one specific thing” kind of approach.
The talk of being non-binary is changing, but I can really tell it’s not a change that the community has pushed, but one which outsiders pushed on them… Clearly as part of other stuff as you just said, it’s about same-gender elitism, at the expense of recognising diversity.
yeah that’s right on the nose; it’s imposed change for the nonbinary community pushed by binary people.
the concept of “aligned” was always wild to me because the definition was never consistent. I heard some people say it meant “adjacent,” I hear some people claim it described their transition experience, and some claim it described their experience with oppression and how society viewed them.
but currently it’s being treated as literally “demigender but not really,” just like you said, and yeah, individual identities that are very important to us are being torn down to blanket us as just “nonbinary” so they can cram us into boxes they understand. and we are all expected to identify with one alignment so they can do that.
This also seems connected to the rise of terminology like “nb men”, “nb girls” used when talking widely about nb people, whlist any terms people who aren’t comfortable with it invent are instantly dismissed as “mogai”.
There were times we got called “mogais” and we don’t even have detailed labels or use split attraction model for ourselves, but apparently “androgyne”, “genderfluid” or “bigender” are “mogai” terms now. It’s become a “trash bin term” for anything that doesn’t fit the binary gay-centered vision.
