There won’t be another Daniel Ricciardo for his first race with red bull at his home Grand Prix putting his car on provisional pole and the crowd erupting in cheers so loud that they could be heard over the sound of the engines, you stupid slut

for those moaning about how max didn't do a post or anything. max and daniels friendship has never been for public consumption. max and daniels friendship is about the small tidbits about how max texted daniel a photo of him driving dale earnhardt's car smiling from ear to ear. it's about how daniel knew that one of max's cats escaped. it's about how when everyone was piling up on daniel, max reached out directly to ask if he was ok. it's about max taking the time to read daniels writing mid-livestream and then leaving to process it. it's max inviting daniel to play padel. it's daniel silently, without communication, helping max out as his last act on the track.
you're so used to friendships that are manufactured to serve a PR team, so many friendships in f1 that are as deep as "who's jet are we taking this week", so many that are just casual acquaintances playing it up for increased brand awareness. the real friendship here is the person who was glued to someone realizing they are about to be fired in slow motion over a weekend. it's holding the umbrella so they don't get wet while you're out in the downpour. it's the shutting down of the implication that you're not one of the greatest. it's the million small moments that are not for the public, but for you and for that one person to know
I touched home soil after my trip to Greece to the announcement of this news. I’ve been compartmentalizing my feelings as best as I can so that I don’t grieve a living person, but the jet lag and dehydration had me up at 3am with tears streaming down my face. I won’t ever love a driver the way I love Daniel. I don’t think it’s possible, but also I won’t allow myself to care this much again. I try to think about the humorous positives of a millionaire kicking back at his farm or the peace in knowing he won’t be scooped out by lecherous pundits and he can finally return home. But then I remember him at 17, in that decrepitly furnished Italian apartment, watching an old Australian film so he wouldn’t lose his accent — because to dream in some ways is to sacrifice in others. And him going to meet Helmut Marko and stepping into a fountain because he was so distracted by the opulence of the building. Wet sneakers squelching all the way there. And I think of him disposing of his racing boots and sauntering around the asphalt paddock with his too thin socked feet like one does in their own home, comfortable and radiant with the joy of winning again. Is that not a return home?
And I think about how graciously he left in 2022 after doing donuts in some dark part of the track — away from prying eyes. And I think about Singapore now, how it ended with a whisper of all things. 13 years in this sport. Jenson said before that Daniel wasn’t used to this kind of loss because he’s always been the golden boy. I’ll always feel hurt about how he’s been misrepresented as a fool or jester in the paddock when he’s the reason so many of us found this sport. He has made this sport lighter with his willingness to give so much of himself. And it’s difficult to think about how he wasn’t ready to leave, how he sat in the cockpit and left the track last because he wasn’t ready to part with a sport he said he’s loved his whole life. I hope he takes time to be with those he loves most, and I hope he enjoys time away from the callous flash of a lens or intrusion of a mic. But the thing about Daniel is he’s mesmerizing, you can’t feed gold back into the dirt once it’s been held under the radiance of daylight.
reporter: is he [daniel ricciardo] really retiring?
kym illman: i've just got an information late last night. look, all i'll say is there might be a twist. it's a long shot, but there could be a twist.
look, guys, this might not even be about daniel having a seat because, clearly, his post on instagram screams retirement. besides, this is kym illman. and he even said he's not 100% sure about it.
My dash is very sad right now and I get it, it feels like the end. But please understand and appreciate that I do not share the sentiments that this is 'it'.
This is allllll too very fishy and weird and the more I think about it, the more i step away from the emotion of it all. The more I'm sticking to my guns that this isn't over.
This is entirely the media's fault.
They kept badgering him while he was mentally and physically exhausted. If he kept hearing it over and over- we can't blame him for starting to believe it.
Anyhoo. I hope he has a lovely break at home, fills his cup and lets his team deal with holding RBR/VCARB responsible for this shit storm. And when he comes to work in COTA I hope he's tanned and happy and doing the most.
You know if this is Daniel's last race the thing that really gets me is the horseshit management of Red Bull/VCARB
Checo isn't fast enough. You're in danger of losing your constructors. So you decide you're probably going to put Daniel in the Red Bull seat in the summer. You send messages ahead to the next race to tell people not to put up Checo's promotional images.
Not so fast, Checo's sponsors say, so you leave Perez in the seat and give up on the constructors' because it's easier to get money from sponsorship than to cover the constructors'.
You want more points with VCARB, you say. You want more points but you keep effing up both your drivers with strategy and putting upgrades on the car that make them go backwards.
I know what we'll do, you say. We'll leave Daniel out for the wolves in Singapore and tell media that it isn't his last race until oops, it might be. We haven't told him though, so he can't say a proper goodbye if it is. We'll just hand him one last shit strategy and watch as he swallows it and takes fastest lap to help Max's championship. For shits and giggles we'll kill Yuki's strategy too, for fairness.
But if Daniel's gone after Singapore, what will Red Bull/VCARB do?
Let's see here. You have Checo, who went backwards in Singapore and can't help the constructors. You have Yuki, who's fast on track but can't give feedback well and has trouble keeping his emotions down on track. You have Liam, who's all well and deserving of a VCARB seat but won't be ready for Red Bull until a few years later.
You have nobody. You still haven't solved the problem of Max's teammate after six years. You refuse to let go of Checo, who shouldn't have been here after the summer break. You won't ever take the chance and promote Yuki to see if a stint in a senior team will work out for him. You'll have fired your best development and update feedback driver for your secondary team.
Carlos has gone to Williams. George, which Christian mentioned, won't ever leave Mercedes. Oscar and Lando will stay at McLaren. You asked Alex last year, and Alex laughed in your face.
And Max can no longer win the constructors' by himself in the car you give him.
It started in the summer break. Red Bull took a gun and pointed it in their own faces and slowly pulled back the trigger and it was only until now, six races from the end off the season, that we see what the bullet will do.
Fuck it might as well if there was ever a time to get in trouble 🤷♀️ :) but I know a couple of people who work in VCARB and not even they're sure what's happening :))) they've literally said there have been information walls erected for weeks and they keep getting conflicting messages :)))) so they fed him to the media this whole weekend with no clarity with everyone laying into him and now by his own words it's been such an exhausting weekend he just wants to be done with it :)) what an unusual and cruel thing to do
he even got driver of the day <3 but hopefully this isn't his last race. we love you daniel!!!<3
