Shoto Todoroki - Heartbreak
**A/N Hey guys! I know itâs been a long time since I wrote anything, and I wanted to post something since I havenât in a while. I have finals this week, and then Iâll be free for the summer and be back to writing for you guys! In the meantime, I originally wrote this as a TodoDeku piece, but changed it to x reader so I could post it here. I hope you guys enjoy!
Shoto had been distant lately.
It was all you could think about. Â For some reason it felt like Shoto had given up, but he couldnât have. Â You still walked that path that brought you close to both your houses and kissed when you parted ways. Â He was still saying âI love youâ. Â Just because he was distant and busy didnât mean it was over.
Thatâs what you told yourself, at least. Â Deep down, you knew it was all lies. Â You just preferred to live in ignorance, even only so you could call him yours. Â You were unhappy with how Shoto brushed you off on a daily basis, but you were willing to put up with it. Â You loved Shoto, youâd seen the good times and believed you could get back there if Shoto would just put in some effort. Â He didnât even have to do much, just show up. Â You loved enough for the both of you.
When Shoto announced that he was going on a trip for recommendation students, your heart broke. Shoto would be out of the country for nearly three weeks. Â But the more you thought about it, the better you felt.
Maybe time apart was what you needed. Â Maybe Shoto just needed some time to himself in order to see just how important you were to him. Â Then heâd come back and things would be good again, right?
You couldnât have been more wrong.
Shoto had been gone seven days, and you were feeling good. Â Shoto was having an awesome time on his trip, which made you happy. Â One day you had sent Shoto a photo that made you laugh, to which Shoto responded with many funny photos of his own.
That small action alone reassured you more than words ever could. Â Just like it used to be. Â Everything was going to be okay.
Turns out, you could have been more wrong.
You were talking with Ochako when it happened. Â âI think itâll be okay,â you said. Â âI think when he comes back, weâll go out to dinner somewhere, then cuddle on the couch and watch a movie. Â Just like we used to.â Â As you finished your sentence, your phone chimed. Â You checked who was messaging you and smiled when you saw Shotoâs contact photo. âItâs from Shoto!â
Look, Iâve been feeling this way for a few weeks and I really just need to do this now. Iâm breaking up with you and Iâm sorry Iâm doing this over text, I feel like an asshole. Â I just wanted to do this sooner or later because I didnât wanna give you false hope. Â I just havenât been feeling the spark between us from when we first started going out. Iâm really sorry, I hope we can still be friends and things can stay mutual between us.
You screamed. Â You didnât know what else to do, so you just let out a loud wail. Â Your stomach dropped as your eyes immediately began to water. Â
What had happened? Things were going to be okay! Â It was all going to be okay! Â Why did he have to quit? Â You threw your phone down as Ochako moved to sit beside you. Â
âShh,â she said in an attempt to soothe you. Â She rubbed your back gently, watching you scream and shout for the next minute as you came to terms with what was happening. Â She didnât even need to read the text to know that you had just been dumped.
After your moment, you wiped your eyes and looked down at your phone. Â You reread the message again and again, just to make sure you were seeing it clearly. Â Maybe you were imagining it. Â Or better yet â maybe this was all some horrible nightmare. Â You werenât sure what youâd do if it was real.
You wanted to yell at Shoto. Â You wanted to scream and cry and hold him close and beg him to stay. Â Why had he done this? Â Why were you only worth a text? Â After nearly nine months together, you had given him your all and Shoto had given nothing. Â Youâd done so much for Shoto to make him happy. Â Why didnât you even get a face-to-face breakup?
Youâd known it was coming. Â You said it was going to be okay and tried to trick yourself into really believing it, but deep down you knew the truth. Â
Shoto had fallen out of love with you.
Not tying and sending the million pleading things you wanted to say was one of the hardest things you ever had to do. Â You sat there, phone in hand, trying to come up with something to say. Â You couldnât just leave that on open. Â But what does one say to something like that?
Itâs okay, I understand. Â Donât ever hesitate if you change your mind.
You regretted the message as soon as you hit send. Â You shouldnât have said it was okay, because it sure as hell was not. Shoto had become this central figure in your life, the only person you could be around without ever getting tired. Heâd become your everything and he just left. Â He just gave up. Â He didnât even try.
Actually, it isnât okay. Â I wasnât expecting this. Â Iâll be honest, I knew you were going to leave me, but I thought I meant enough to you to at least be worth a face to face â or phone call at least! Â Video chat! Â Anything besides a TEXT MESSAGE! Â Guess I overestimated my importance to you. Â
You stared at the typed-out message on your phone for three whole minutes. Â Your finger remained close to the send button, but never came close enough to send it. Â Eventually, you backed down and erased the message. Â You were hoping maybe in a day or two, Shoto would change his mind. Maybe heâd realize what an awful mistake heâd made. Â If you sent that message, you knew thereâd be no going back.
You stood up, causing Ochakoâs hand to fall off your back. Â âIâm going for a walk,â you said plainly. Â You walked away without waiting for a response. Â It was cold out, but you didnât bother to grab a jacket. Â It was getting dark, but you didnât bother to grab a flashlight.
You walked around the UA campus for what felt like hours. Â Every passing second felt like its own forever. Â Youâd started crying again at one point, but you werenât sure exactly when that was. Â It wasnât until you heard a voice call out to you that you wiped away your tears.
âYoung l/n?â Â Youâd recognize that voice anywhere. Â All Might, your favorite person in the world. Well, second favorite to Shoto. âWhat are you doing out here?â
For once, you didnât want to talk to All Might. Â You just wanted to be alone. Â You pushed past your heroâs fragile figure, not giving an answer as you ran off. Â You could apologize later.
All Might chased after you, grabbing onto your shoulder. Â âWhatâs wrong?â
You felt weak.  You were supposed to be training to be a Hero, and instead you were acting like some heartbroken teenager.  Even though you were a heartbroken teenager, you shouldnât have been acting that way.  But you couldnât help it.  It was all you could think about.  You wiped your eyes and sniffled as you looked up into All Mightâs blazing blue eyes. âSh-Sh-Shoto d-d-d-dumped m-meâŚâ
All Mightâs gaze softened as he let out a sigh. Â âIâm sorry, Young l/n.â Â He put a hand on your shoulder, but to his surprise it was just brushed off.
You didnât want to see anyone. Â You just wanted to be alone so you could cry. Â For the last couple of weeks, people had been telling you the relationship was coming to an end. Â Whenever youâd confide in your friends about your relationship problems, youâd always hear the same thing: âItâs only a matter of time, y/n.â
All Might gently reached out to you again, pulling you close into an embrace. Â All Might was the closest figure you had ever had to a father, and you was basically All Mightâs child. Â It killed him to see you in pain.
Once pulled into the hug, you lost control. Â You gripped onto All Mightâs white t-shirt tightly as tears streamed down your cheeks and incoherent sobs left your lips.
The rest of the night after that was just a blur.
Next thing you knew, you were waking up in your bed. Â Not your dorm bed â your home bed. Â Youâd forgotten UA was getting a week-long break and you were going home for the week. Â Your head was pounding, you could hardly recall the previous dayâs events. Â You opened your phone and typed in your passcode, 74686, spelling out Shoto. Â When it didnât work, everything came flooding back. Â Youâd changed your password. Â Youâd changed your lock screen.
With a simple text, Shoto had changed your life.
Fresh tears welled in your eyes, and you buried your face in your pillow. Â You were determined not to let them fall this time. Â You had to be strong.
After only a few minutes, your mother knocked on your door. Â ây/n?â she asked as she turned the doorknob and pushed the door open. Â When she saw you sitting up in your bed, hugging a tear-stained pillow, her eyes filled with sorrow as she rushed to you. âIâm so sorry, honey,â she said gently as she held you close, and you cried into her shoulder.
The week carried on just like that. Â Late Sunday night, you returned to UA. Â You immediately ran into your dorm and laid face-down on your pillow until you fell asleep.
The following morning was the hardest yet.
You were waking up early to meet Shoto before class. Â Youâd sent Shoto a message; you had some things you wanted back, plus you wanted answers. Â You planned to ask why heâd done it. Â Why you hadnât been good enough. Â Why you didnât get a face-to-face conversation. Â You had a million questions flooding through your mind, and you planned to ask all of them.
But when you saw Shoto approaching, they all disappeared.
You stood up from the bench you were sitting on with Ochako and Tsuyu. Â You followed as Shoto led you around a corner before leaning against a wall. Â In his one outstretched hand he held your requested belongings, and once they were taken he crossed his arms over his chest.
You studied him. He looked fine. Â No bloodshot or swollen eyes, no tear-stains, nothing. Â He looked totally unaffected by the whole thing, and that hurt more than the initial break-up. Â Not only did Shoto not care enough to break up with you in person, he didnât care at all. Â He looked like he was already over it. Â Just a week shy of nine months together, and Shoto felt nothing.
Shoto raised his eyebrows expectantly at you, as you were just standing there and staring at him. You had your million questions you wanted to ask, dozens of ways to ask them, but you could only get one word out:
âWhy?â
Shoto shrugged his shoulders so nonchalantly that you wanted to punch him.  âI justâŚdidnât feel it anymore.â
The billions of pieces your heart had shattered into even more. Â Your heart was beating so fast, your eyes were already beginning to water. Â You couldnât cry in front of Shoto, but you couldnât think of any of your other questions. You opened your mouth to speak, but no words came out. Â What could you even say to that?
Shoto pursed his lips as he looked you up and down. Â âIâll see you around.â Â With that he walked away, leaving you shattered and broken, standing there with your retrieved objects fallen to the ground and forgotten, as tears raced down your cheeks.
Hey guys. So I wrote this a while back and Iâve gotten a couple messages about a part two. I unfortunately lack the motivation to physically write the story, but I already know the ending to it. I want you guys to send me what you think the ending is - it doesnât have to be a whole written out scenario, it can just be a spitball list of your thoughts. So give it another read and let me know! After I get some responses, Iâll post what the ending to fhs story really is! I thought this would be a fun little game, and I hope you guys participate!
It's been a year and a half.
y/n still thinks about Shoto far more often than she'd care to admit. At most, hours in between. She can go days, weeks even without thinking about other people she's lost. Old friends, family members who broke off...but never him. She still searches the sidewalks when she drives around, hoping to catch a glimpse of him. She won't delete the app they used to message each other because a part of her is hoping he'll reach out.
She's tried so hard to move on. She moved to a new city for school and even downloaded apps like Tinder and Bumble just to try to find someone to replace the hole Shoto left in her heart, but she never follows through. She gets cold feet and ghosts them because she's afraid. Of what, she isn't exactly sure. Afraid of getting hurt again? Afraid of rejection? Afraid of the unknown? Or is she just afraid that she'll never be as happy with someone else as she was with Shoto?
There are days when she feels fine. She doesn't think about him too much, but of course he still never leaves her thoughts for long. But when she thinks of him, it isn't thoughts of affection and good memories. It's laughter that she could have been so stupid, so blind. It's being completely and totally over him.
And then, there are the other days. The days where she replays their best memories over and over in her head, silently wishing he would come back so she can explain herself. She went a little crazy after Shoto left her, talking to Shoto's friends about him and trying to find any excuse she could to talk to him. Three months after the breakup she was still thinking of new things to ask to get back, just so she could talk to him. She knew it was crazy, and after a few more months passed she realized she'd acted like a lunatic.
She wanted to explain herself. She wanted him to understand why she'd acted the way she had, maybe even forgive her. At least be her friend. But Shoto hated her, despised her even.
She couldn't say she didn't feel the same about him.
She often wonders, if he ever actually came back, what would she say? She was terrified that she'd say yes and they'd fall into the same distant cycle that caused Shoto to leave in the first place. But she was also afraid of missing out on him maybe trying to be better.
She knew she didn't have to worry about it, though. Shoto was never coming back.
y/n still had a hard time hearing that song they used to dance to. She still had some of his little tricks ingrained into her head. They'd been broken up twice as long as they'd been together, but her heart still hurt as if it had just happened hours ago.
She doesn't cry over him anymore, though. She isn't sad that he's gone. She's glad, actually, even on the days where she misses him. Because it isn't exactly him that she misses - Shoto had been a terrible boyfriend. No, she missed the feeling. She missed the feeling of loving and being loved back. She missed the feeling of her hand in his, or his lips on hers. She missed the feeling of pure, utter joy she had never felt before him. She missed feeling complete and happy, something she had never felt before.
She knew it was time to move on, so she didn't talk about it to her friends anymore. They all told her she was carrying on and just had to get over it, and she was getting there. It would just take time.
But overall, she's okay. She hasn't dated anybody since she and Shoto broke up, but that's okay. She's finding out who she is on her own and learning to love herself before she tries to love another person again. Some days it's hard, but she powers through.
Because the world doesn't end with Shoto Todoroki.
