To the WHITE and other folks NEW TO FLATBUSH , Brooklyn who are riding MTA buses and dollar vans - Here ways to show respect to the lifelong / longtime community members : 1 . IF YOU ARE AN ABLE- BODIED PERSON and there are other available seats - please SAVE the front seats for elders , folks living with disabilities (seen & unseen) , pregnant people , people with small children etc . 2. Please be POLITICALLY conscious by NOT forcing Black and Brown people to sit in the back of the bus as we did during the era of #JimCrow . Please utilize the rear seats . 3. Do NOT treat dollar van drivers as if they are your personal chauffeurs. Get off at designated street corners vs asking drivers to stop at the exact location you want to get off . 4. On both buses and dollar vans , please be mindful of the amount of physical & cultural space you take up, /how loud your conservations are/ or the disparaging remarks you make about the community you have recently moved to . 5. Please respect that your presence as a NEW RESIDENT in our neighborhood has meant higher rents , no repairs , increased harassment by the police , landlords and developers , and displacement for lifelong/ longtime residents, so PLEASE show the uttermost RESPECT for our cultural norms on buses and dollar vans . 6.
