okay okay okay. jean-jacques rousseau wrote the social contract in 1762 which basically outlined that the relationship between the people in power and the general public is a mutual one. both groups serve the other, and if the people in power start disrespecting the public (thereby breaking this mutual social contract) then the public has the right to get rid of the people in power. the social contract was HIGHLY influential among philosophers, including karl marx and friedrich engels, who co-wrote wrote the communist manifesto and multiple other pieces of literature on labor rights. as thoughts and ideas about the power of laborers started to solidify throughout society as more literature from various authors started popping up, workers started demanding less hours and safer work environments – and, more importantly, they organized unions! although they faced much backlash, unions eventually became more popular and standardized. in 2007 the writers guild of america went on strike. the goal was to give writers better wages instead of having all of the money pour into the laps of big tv+movie studios. the CW writers also went on strike. the writers guild of america and multiple big studios came to an agreement in early 2008. because the supernatural writers were on strike, they had to cut season 3 short (only 16 episodes instead of the usual 22-23). because they were pressed for time and were looking for a way to quickly end the season, they killed off dean and sent him to hell. but then came the start of season 4, and one of their main characters was dead. uh oh. how would they fix this? the writers brainstormed and said okay. we need to somehow save him from hell. only a really powerful being could probably do that. in comes castiel. you know the rest of the story
