Smile and bear it. Smile and bear it. His mother’s hissed warnings still ringing in his ears, Peter schmoozed around the crowd. As the future second, the future Alpha if something had happened to his sister, heaven forbid, it was his ‘duty’ to attend such mind-numbing, tedious social gatherings, to make nice with neighboring alphas. On pain of more Alpha lessons.

So he smiled and bore it, eyes tight as he finished up his conversation with the new leader of some pack, an Englishman with some strange name that had Peter’s senses tingling in not a good way. A young, dark-skinned, fairly good-looking man approached him, awkwardness cloaking his scent like cheap cologne. Ah, his future emissary, if the teen had to hazard a guess. Why else would there be a human in a den of literal wolves?

He returned the handshake, holding on a tad longer than appropriate, wanting to see how his future emissary handled stress. “Peter Hale, but I have a feeling you already knew that.”

Alan met his eyes, not reacting to the way Peter held his hand too long, it was a good way to get a better reading on him. There was an edge to Peter that Alan couldn't place, something a little off, but if this was his potential alpha, he could overlook it.

"I did," he replied, voice more confident. Peter was just going to accept it and was actually going to talk to him, that made things a lot easier. His cousin had filled his head with horror stories about the lengths emissaries had to go to with young werewolves and now he was wondering if she'd just been trying to scare him.

He glanced around the room, then back to Peter. "I know this is a party, if you'd rather not talk to me right now we could meet at another time?" Be polite, be conscientious, now, and he could push in the future, once he knew Peter's limits.
