Origins BG Elves 2
Went 3-0 in a 6 pod with BG Elves again. Seems like the only deck I can draft in origins but I keep getting passed great cards. Idk
Eyeblight Massacre in the side. There are too many elves running around and I was only able to pull off a decent sweep once. I think I am over-valuing the card because it is a sweeper.
Definitely tried to make a more aggressive deck.
Match 1: Played mono-red aggro. Had some scary moments when he double Titan Strength’ed his creature. Game 1 I was at 4, holding back an unholy hunger with spell mastery for the life game.
Match 2: Played G/U guy who sat to my left. He had a few Bounding Krasis to make my life complicated and a lot of Elves but couldn’t handle T2 Troll T3 Eyeblight Assassin. His top end was way more powerful so I ended up siding touch of moon glove in and catching him off guard with it. In general, his creatures were stronger but I had more removal and Gold-Forged Sentinel was able to fly over for the win
Match 3: Played G/W who sat 2 to my left. Almost had him one game with a Rouge’s Passaged Rhox Maulers but he top-decked Gaea’s Revenge and beat for 13. Happens. Game 3 I curved out pretty well: T1 Gnarlroot T2 Eyeblight Assassin shoot a guy T3 Dwyen T4 Read the Bones T5 Wilt-Leaf Daen.
Deck list:
Rouge’s Passage x1
Might of the Masses x1
Guardian Automaton x1

Origins BG Elves
Went BG-Elves in a 6 pod. Did not do so well at 1-2.
Game 1 beat mono-white aggro. He always had a 1-drop but Akroan Jailer is pretty weak. Best sequence I saw was: Jailer into Topan freeblade guaranteeing the T3 renown. Maulers and Gorger ensured the win.
Game 2 lost but forget the deck
Game 3 lost but forget deck

DDF 9
Another surprising 2nd place with 2-1 in a weird 11 person draft. Lost round 1 to the overall winner so I guess it makes sense. Got past all sorts of white/green/blue nonsense. Had so many bombs and good removal that I sandblasted my own Daghatar when it was stolen by Illusory gains. Literally every creature in my hand was more powerful. Lol
Decklist:
Daghatar the Adamant x1
Monastery Mentor x1
Ojutai’s Command x1
Arashin Soverign x1
Dromoka’s Command x1
Ethereal Ambush x1

Origins 2
Not sure if I listed the first origins draft I did but I the second one went pretty well. 2-1 and second place in a strong 8-man draft. Got to live the dream with G/B elves even though I opened a Jace.
Decklist:
Zendikar’s Roil x1
Fleshbag Marauder x1
Orchard Spirit x2
Reave Soul x1
Unholy Hunger x1
Yeva’s Forcemage x2

Theros 1
Throwback for some, first time for me. Finally an 8-person draft so I don’t get locked out of the top with a perfect recored like last week. RW aggro lost to a more aggressive RW game 3. Happens. Pick removal high. Always
Decklist:
1x Rise to the Challenge
1x Sentry of the Underworld
1x Kragma Warcaller
1x Pensive Minotaur
1x Battlewise Valor
1x Eagle of the Watch
1x Pharagax Giant

2x Swamp
7x Mountain
7x Plains
DDR 8
Living the dream! Opened Assault formation in a 10-man draft and it tabled! I knew I had to run with it even though I was blue-black-red at that point. I went 3-0 but tie-breakers cost me first place
Decklist:
1x Swiftwater Cliffs
1x Roast
1x Silumgar Spell-Eater
2x Palace Familiar
1x Hunt the Weak
1x Abzan Beastmaster
2x Aerie Bowmaster

Pretty silly deck. Still loving DDR after 8 drafts
Modern Masters 2 Draft 2
Another surprising 2-1; not sure if I am drafting well or playing well -- probably some combination. I took a video of my draft choices I’ll try to stitch together at some point. Another bloodthirst deck with nice blue support
Decklist:
Narcolepsy x1
Culling Dais x1
Goblin Fireslinger x2
Savage Twister x2
Skarrgan Firebird x2
Gust-Skimmer x1
Blood Ogre x3
Stormblood Berserker x2
Electrolyze x1
Novijen Sages x1
Aethersnipe x2
Thrumming bird x1
Helium Squirter x2
Viegean Graftmage x1
Wildfire x1
Izzet Boilerworks x1
With all of the board sweepers I thought culling dais would help me recoup losses. It was a weird fun deck; I really like bloodthirst and X in modern masters 2
Living Mindfully 3
I don’t know. I guess stuff is hard sometimes. I want to do a thousand things but can’t even do one. Write out numbers less than 10; use numerical representation for >= 10. Or something like that. What an arbritrary rule.
The funny part is; I’ve just checked-in to a flight to see someone I love and haven’t been able to see as much as I would like, contacted an old friend, drafted another email to another old friend, and am listening to some crazy mbira music that is a completely new experience.
The 3rd quote to live mindfully is: “The essence of bravery is being without self-deception”
I can’t lie to myself anymore. Whenever, where-ever the opportunity I have to make an effort. Trying is sacred. Failing is normal. I may still know nothing but I won’t lie to myself (or others) about it.
Modern Masters 2 Draft
A surprising 2-1 with a deck I’ll call Spirit-thirst because its mostly black spirits and red blood thirst creatures. I couldn’t get enough of either one to justify going all in. The removal suite is pretty outstanding though.
Deck list:
Wildfire x1 -- no one sees it coming, finisher
Fulminator Mage x1 -- very good with all the bounce lands
Expedition Map x1
Stormblood Berserker x1 -- great
Thief of Hope x3 -- filler, never got the silly value with NI
Nameless Inversion x1 -- so good
Bloodthrone Vampire x3 -- almost always a legit threat
Burst Lightning x2
Gorehorn Minotaurs x2 -- top of my curve
Wrecking Ball x1
Sign in Blood x1
Smash to Smithereens x1 -- everyone plays artifacts
Blood Ogre x1
Grim Affliction x1
Wayfarer’s Bauble x1
Ashenmoor Gouger x1 -- brings the beats
Restless Apparition x1 -- super good threat even though its tricky to cast
Some things I learned: removal is king. Synergy is super powerful -- if I had gone all in with the blood thirst my deck would have been much more powerful. Draft more artifact hate and don’t be afraid of bombs if you can beat face.
DDR Draft 7
Welp, 0-3 this week. I thought I had a really powerful UBR deck but it was too inconsistent and its removal suite wasn’t as strong as I thought. I did prioritize removal though. The guy to my left passed me a flatten but was drafting black. Whatever. It was an 11-person draft so no real point in trying to read into it
Deck List:
Stormcrag Elemental x2 -- not as good as I thought...
Sage-Eye Avengers x1 -- ate removal every time. Even with 5 toughness, happens
Douse in Gloom x3 -- I thought I would wreck with this set. Like kill any x/2 with impunity. All morphs fear me but no
Vulturous Aven x2 -- just ok, not really good
Ojutai’s Summons x2 -- by turn 5 I was usually so far behind this wouldn’t even catch me up. Was always a good card I wanted to draw though
Gurmag Drowner x1 -- really good sifting through the crap in my deck
Reduce in Stature x1 -- pretty bad
Whisk Away x1 -- still good
Cunning Strike x1 -- too expensive
Dutiful Attendant x1 -- too slow
Qarsi Deceiver x1 -- only good as an 0/4 wall
Kolaghan Monument x1
Atarka Effreet x1 -- so good since most thought my morphs were stormcrags or other cards. I almost always got a 2-1 with this guy
Palace Familiar x1 -- fine
Dismal Backwater x1
Flatten x1 -- so good
Hungering Yeti x1 -- just ok
Ojutai Interceptor x1 -- powerhouse
Bloodfell Caves x1
Monastery Loremaster x1 -- never unmorphed him, too slow
DDR Draft 6
Ugh, went 1-2. DDR is not nearly as fun as Modern Masters. Tried to replicate my G-X big dumb creatures which seemed good since most of the other decks were quick B-R but my deck was too weak (no bombs) and removal light to do well.
Deck List:
Misthoof Kirin x2 -- really good
Segmented Krotiq x2 -- power house
Lurking Arynx x1 -- I thought getting him late was a gift. I was wrong. His ability costs too much for it to be relevant
Student of Ojutai x1 -- Was very effective especially against aggro decks.
Abzan Skycaptain x3 -- Almost always bad. If my deck had higher toughness creatures it could be much more interesting.
Sandblast x1 -- never saw it but I know its awesome removal
Salt Road Quartermasters x1 -- amazing
Dromoka Dunecaster x1 -- amazing
Temur Runemark x1 -- a bad idea all around. Usually sided out for glaring ageis
Circle of Elders x1 -- held down the fort and let me flip krotiqs if the board stalled out
Colossodon Yearling x1 -- the big butt we were promised
Center Soul x2 -- didn’t have any creatures really worth saving
Return to Earth x1 -- always a main deck
Vial of Dragonfire x1 -- i had no other removal
Blossoming Sands x1
Evolving Wilds x1
Lightwalker x1 -- always good
Strongarm Monk x1 -- really good
Enduring Victory x1 -- its removal!
Dromoka Monument x1 -- it kinda flies, ok
Sigh....
DDR Draft 5
Hey I finally went 3-0! Off the back of GR-beat down. One notable pick was Whisperer of the Wilds over Destructor Dragon. The Dragon actually came back around so I felt pretty clever.
Deck List:
Glade Watcher x1
Whisperer Of the Wilds x1
Ainok Guide x3
Dragon Fodder x1
Guardian Shield-Bearer x1
Segmented Krotiq x2
Colossodon Yearling x1
Goblin Heelcutter x2
Atarka Monument x1
Circle of Elders x1
Stampeding Elk Herd x1
Herdchaser Dragon x1
Destructor Dragon x1
Savage Ventmaw x1
Roast x1
Draconic Roar x1
Tread Upon x1
Pyrotechnics x1
Return to Earth x1
Picking removal high helped
Something Done
I was just wandering and I stumbled across the band Surfer Blood. Their music is fine -- not ground breaking but fun, enjoyable. Then I saw the campaign for a band members cancer treatment.
I donated. You should too. Would random internet people give me money? What have I done? I don’t really have any followers or want any so me sharing the link is kinda silly. I suppose I will anyway.
More importantly, I had this emotional connection with someone even though we will (probably) never meet. This post will fall into an abyss and never be read. But maybe, this dude can beat cancer and keep making ok rock music. That would make me really happy for some reason. Rock on, dude
DDF Draft 4
Went 1-2 with a deck that I thought was complete crap. Each loss was a 1-2 with a heart-breaking 3rd game but honestly, I don’t think this build was strong at all
Kolaghan Skirmisher x2
Reckless Imp x2
Jeskai Sage x1
Silumgar Monument x1
Zephyr Scribe x1
Alesha’s Vanguard x1
Orc Sureshot x1
Gurmag Drowner x1
Rakshasha Gravecaller x1
Supplant Form x1
Blood-Chin Fanatic x1
Noxious Dragon x1
Acid-Spewer Dragon x1
Anticipate x1
Skywise Teachings x1
Void Squall x1
Reach of Shadows x1
Will of the Naga x1
Reduce in Stature x1
Taigam’s Strike x1
Taigam’s Strike was a real loser for me. In games where it helped, I was already winning and I got blown out trying to use it a few times. Reckless Imp is awesome. Cheap dash + Orc Sureshot always generates value. I think similarly to delve having 1 or 2 exploit creatures is a sweet spot for decks not trying to make it a theme. I feel more comfortable playing Jeskai Sage and other mediocre 2 - drops when I know there are some great sac outlets. Supplant Form is almost always a 2 for 1. I love it.
