Glitter French Tips | Nailing It

It’s time for another alternative French tip! This design uses glitter to add some extra sparkle to nails. Not only that, but the tip extends up to one end of the cuticle in order to add something a little bit unique and different. Any glitter works well with this design, but a holographic glitter polish adds eye-catching rainbow sparkles to the look.  

Materials:

1) Base Coat

2) Top Coat

3) Light Nail Polish

4) Glitter Nail Polish

5) Small Paint Brush

Procedure:

1) Begin by painting your nails with a layer of base coat?

2) Paint your nails with two coats of light nail polish.

3) Use the silver nail polish to create a french tip on the nail (if necessary, use a sticker guide to complete this step).

4) Dip your fine paint brush into the silver paint.

5) On one side of the nail, drag the end of the french tip up to the towards the cuticle. Ensure that you stay along the edge of the nail and that the thinnest part of the line is closest to the cuticle.

6) Seal in place by painting all of the nails with a layer of top coat.

XOXO | Nailing It

Valentine’s Day is just around the corner and I have a brand new nail tutorial to celebrate this year. Instead of a minimalistic red heart design like last year, this pink design features X’s and O’s all around. With enough practice and precision, this pattern will look like it was done using nail wrap stickers, rather than painted by hand.

Materials:

1) Base Coat

2) Top Coat

3) Light Pink Nail Polish

4) White Paint

5) Large and Medium Dotting Tool(s)

6) Small Paint Brush

Procedure:

1) Begin by painting your nails with a layer of base coat.

2) Paint two coats of pink nail polish onto your nails.

3) Dip your large dotting tool into the white paint.

4) Close to the cuticle and at the middle of your nail, place a dot.

5) Dip your small paint brush into the white paint.

6) Just above the dot, paint a small X.

7) Continue the line of alternating dots and X’s until you reach the tip of the nail.

8) On each side of the X’s, place another dot.

9) On each side of the middle dots, paint another X.

10) Dip your medium dotting tool into the pink nail polish.

11) Place pink dots within the white dots so that they become O’s.

12) Once dry, seal the design in place with a layer of top coat.

Musical Notes | Nailing It

As much as I love glossy top coats, one of my nail goals for 2019 is to create more matte nail designs and feature them on my blog. Today’s musical notes pattern uses only black and white, which are the two shades that I find work best with a matte finish. That being said, those who are looking for a more colourful design can use a variety of colours to paint the musical notes and a matte finish will still look just as good.

Materials:

1) Base Coat

2) Matte Top Coat

3) White Nail Polish

4) Black Paint

5) Large Dotting Tool

6) Small Paint Brush

Procedure:

1) Begin by painting your nails with a layer of base coat.

2) Paint two coats of white nail polish onto your nails.

3) Dip your large dotting tool into the black paint.

4) Place a few dispersed dots over the nail.

5) Dip your paint brush into the black paint.

6) Add stems to the dots in order to create musical notes. 

7) To create a more even and pattern-like look, add a few extra stems that lead off of the nail.

8) Finish by applying a thin layer of matte top coat across all of your nails.

Dotted Flowers | Nailing It

Dotted flowers are easily a nail art staple. For many nail artists, this is likely one of the first few designs that they attempted. I’ve been wanting to showcase this basic technique on my blog for a while, but couldn’t think of any layout that would make it interesting. However, the other month, I saw a neat flower design by one of my favourite nail artists, Hang Nguyen, that would be a perfect way to showcase how to do dotted flowers. Materials:

1) Base Coat

2) Top Coat

3) Pink Nail Polish

4) Purple Paint

5) White Paint

6) Medium Dotting Tool

Procedure:

1) Start by painting your nails with a layer of base coat.

2) Paint two coats of pink nail polish.

3) Dip your dotting tool into the purple paint.

4) In the middle of your nail, place five dots in a circle to form a flower.

5) Add two more flowers - one directly to the right and one directly to the left of the first flower.

6) After cleaning off, dip your dotting tool into the white paint.

7) Add a white dot to the middle of each flower.

8) Seal the design in place with a layer of top coat.

Primary Ponytail

Primary colours are being showcased everywhere right now, and with just a few colourful hair supplies, the trend can be translated easily to hair as well. Today’s hairstyle uses hair ties and bobby pins in a simple layout to create a unique and bold look. While this tutorial is meant to show how to use primary colours in hair, the hairstyle can of course be done using any colour of supplies. 

Materials:

1) Brush

2) Primary Coloured Hair Tie(s) 

3) 2 Primary Coloured Bobby Pins 

4) 2 Different Primary Coloured Bobby Pins

Procedure:

1) Begin by brushing your hair and creating a deep side part.

2) Using your brush, create a clean and tight side ponytail on the same side that your hair part is located. I chose to tie the ponytail in place with two yellow hair ties instead of one, as it creates more colour.

3) Take one bobby pin and place it vertically above the ear.

4) Take a different coloured bobby pin, placing it close to the first, but putting it on an angle so that it begins to point towards the back of the head.

5) Going back to the first colour of pin, place it next to the second pin, but again fanning outwards so that it faces towards the back of the head.

6) Add the final bobby pin, placing it next to the third pin and fanning out to the back again. Together, the pins should create a fan-like effect that follows the curve of the ear.

Matte/Glitter Combo | Nailing It

Happy New Year! The black and gold colour combination seems to be a classic for this time of year, but what about a second combination of matte and glitter? This design takes care of both, putting together a simple design with an unconventional texture pairing. It’s perfect for any New Year’s celebration! Does anybody have new nail goals for 2019? 

Materials:

1) Base Coat

2) Matte Top Coat

3) Black Nail Polish

4) Gold Nail Polish

5) Tape

6) Loose Gold Glitter

7) Fan Brush

Procedure:

1) Start by painting your nails with a layer of base coat.

2) Paint two coats of black nail polish.

3) Apply one coat of matte top coat to all of your nails. Ensure that your nails dry completely before proceeding to the next step.

4) Use two pieces of tape to create a triangle shape in the middle of the nail. 

5) Paint the exposed part of the nail with gold nail polish. Don’t worry about it being perfect as the tape will act as a barrier.

6) Use the fan brush to sprinkle loose gold glitter onto the nail. Lightly pat into place.

7) While the polish is still wet, carefully peel off the tape. This should reveal a clean line between the sparkly and matte areas of the design.

Christmas Wreath

Just two sleeps until Christmas!! If you’re looking for a last-minute festive hairstyle for all of the Christmas parties that will be happening over the next few days, then I have you covered with this Christmas wreath look. I have seen photos of wreath hair before, but many of them looked super complicated, so I decided to put together a version that any skill level could do. Happy holidays everybody!

Materials:

1) Brush

2) 2 Large Hair Ties

3) Green Ribbon

4) Small Hair Tie

5) Bobby Pins

6) Red Bow

Procedure:

1) Begin by brushing through your hair.

2) Tie your hair into a half ponytail in the middle of your head. Hold in place with one large hair tie.

3) Take a piece of green ribbon and tie it to your hair elastic.

4) Split your hair into two sections and use the piece of ribbon as a third. 

5) Begin a regular braid down to the bottom of the ponytail.

6) Tie off with a small hair tie.

7) Take the end of the ponytail and use a second hair tie to tie it back up to the top of the ponytail. This creates a loop shape.

8) Use bobby pins to shape the loop and make it hold in a round circle, just like a Christmas wreath.

8) Lastly, place the red bow over the top hair ties to complete the look.

Reindeer | Nailing It

Less than 10 days until Christmas!! Who else is super excited? Today’s design features these cute reindeer who are perfect for holiday parties and celebrations. While there are quite a few steps and materials that go into this tutorial, the process itself isn’t too difficult and is really worth the time in the end!

Materials:

1) Base Coat

2) Top Coat

3) Light Nail Polish

4) Brown Paint

5) Gold Paint

6) Red Paint

7) White Paint

8) Black Paint

9) Small Paint Brush

10) Large and medium dotting tool(s)

Procedure:

1) Begin by painting your nails with a layer of base coat.

2) Paint two coats of a light coloured nail polish.

3) Dip your paintbrush into the brown paint.

4) Create a curve that goes along the bottom (closest to the tip) third of the nail.

5) Use more brown paint to fill in the area between the curve and tip.

6) After cleaning off the paint brush, dip it into the gold paint.

7) Paint two straight lines coming out of the brown reindeer head.

8) Give the antlers more detail by adding short lines to the ends of the long lines.

9) Dip your largest dotting tool into the red paint.

11) Add a big red nose to the tip of the nail. 

12) Clean off the dotting tool and dip it into the white paint.

13) Give the reindeer two large white eyes.

14) Take the small dotting tool and dip it into white paint.

15) Add pupils to the reindeer’s eyes. Pupil placement can really determine the personality of the reindeer.

16) Finish the entire design off with a layer of glossy top coat.

Bobby Pin Snowflake

I’m sticking with the snowflake theme again this week, this time for a new hair tutorial. Although bold Christmas hairstyles can be fun at this time of year, sometimes something more subtle can be just as exciting to put together. Simply working with a few blue bobby pins can create a unique snowflake-esque pattern that is sure to embellish any style. 

Materials:

1) Brush

2) 4 Blue Bobby Pins

Procedure:

1) Start by brushing out your hair.

2) Separate a small section of hair from the front middle of your head.

3) Horizontally bobby pin into place. 

4) Directly in the middle of the first bobby pin, carefully add a second bobby pin vertically.

5) Add a third bobby pin that is on a diagonal line between the first two pins.

6) Finally, place your last pin in the opposite diagonal direction. From this, both diagonals should create an X shape and their intersection point should be directly on top of the initial intersection created by pins 1 and 2.

Snowflakes | Nailing It

It’s finally December!! That means it’s finally time for festive holiday nail art! Because there’s still a little bit of time before Christmas, I thought it would be best to start with a winter-themed design. I think these snowflakes are super fun as both a full set or an accent nail. They also look cool with added on glitter or gems, so there are a ton of ways to make this design personal.

Materials:

1) Base Coat

2) Top Coat

3) Frosty Blue Nail Polish

4) White Paint

5) Small Paint Brush

Procedure:

1) Start by painting your nails with a base coat.

2) Paint two coats of a frosty or sparkly blue nail polish.

3) Dip your paint brush into the white paint.

4) Paint a horizontal line two-thirds of the way across your nail.

5) Paint a diagonal line from the same starting point towards the opposite tip of your nail.

6) Paint a third line, once again using the same starting point and painting towards the opposite cuticle. 

7) Add a collection of short lines to the end of each long line for more detail.

8) Smooth everything out with a layer of top coat.

Woven Half Updo

Looking for another way to change your half up hairstyle? By simply weaving a couple pieces of hair through another, you can get a new look that is super unique! The process of weaving in hair may be a little tricky at first, but is definitely manageable once you’ve done it (or a similar technique) a couple times!

Materials:

1) Brush

2) 2 Small Hair Ties

Procedure:

1) Start by brushing through your hair.

2) Create a small ponytail using only the hair from to top middle of your head.

3) Make a hole just above where your hair tie is placed.

4) Take a piece of hair from the front right of your head.

5) Pull the piece through the hole.

6) Take a piece of hair from the front left of your head.

7) Pull the piece of hair though the same hole.

8) Repeat steps 4-7 a second time, making sure the whole front section of your hair is pulled through.

9) Take the original ponytail and all of the hair that was pulled through the hole and tie it together with a second hair tie. This step is important to ensure that the woven pieces will not loosen or fall out.

Happy Birthday Mickey | Nailing It

Oh boy! It’s Mickey Mouse’s 90th birthday today! Although I’ve done a Mickey Mouse nail tutorial in the past, I couldn’t help but to do another one to celebrate this special day. So simple, so crisp, and so fun, these are perfect for all fans of Mickey Mouse. Click here to see another Mickey tutorial.

Materials:

1) Base Coat

2) Top Coat

3) White and/ or Red Nail Polish

4) Black Paint

5) Large Dotting Tool

6) Small Paint Brush

Procedure:

1) Begin by preparing your nails with a layer of base coat.

2) Paint your nails with two coats of white and/ or red nail polish. I decided to go with primarily white along with a red accent nail.

3) Dip your paintbrush into the black paint.

4) On one corner of your nail, paint a small semi-circle.

5) Fill in this semi-circle with more black paint.

6) Dip your large dotting tool into the black paint.

7) Connect two dots to the outside of the semi-circle as Mickey Mouse’s ears.

8) Finalize everything with a shiny layer of top coat.

Pancaked Crown Braid

I have another hair tutorial this week just so I can get my posts back onto the same hair and nail rotation as before. Next week will be back to a nail tutorial followed by alternating hair and nails every Sunday. Today’s tutorial is a crown braid that is a little different than the variations of this style that I’ve done before. In this version, one side of the braid gets pancaked which adds a different texture to the look.

Materials:

1) Brush

2) 3 Small Hair Ties

Procedure:

1) Start by brushing your hair.

2) Separate two sections of hair; one from each side of your head.

3) Braid both of the sections, tying off each with a small hair tie.

4) On the right side of the left braid (the side that faces the centre of the head), begin to pull each stitch of the braid out to make it flatter and larger.

5) On the other side of the head, pancake the left side of the right braid (again, this is the side that faces the centre of the head).

6) Take the two braids and tie them together in the middle back of your head, ensuring that the pancaked side faces up. Remember to remove the hair ties of the excess braids.

Squiggle Braid

A couple years ago, I did a tutorial on an uneven braid that can be used to add a little more emphasis to a look than a regular braid. This squiggle braid is a variation that uses a combination of two braided sections and one flat section to draw emphasis. I decided to call it a squiggle braid because the one section that is not braided looks like it’s squiggling between the two which are braided. This technique works in a variety of different ponytails, so be sure to try them all out.

Materials:

1) Brush

2) Large Hair Tie

3) 3 Small Hair Ties

Procedure:

1) Begin by brushing your hair into a ponytail of your choice. I chose a half-up ponytail, but a regular or side ponytail would also work well.

2) Split the ponytail into three sections.

3) Braid and tie off one of the three sections.

4) Braid and tie off a second of the three sections. Leave the third section as is.

5) Begin braiding the three sections together, making sure that the section without a braid lies flat.

6) At the end of the hair, tie off with a small hair elastic.

Pumpkins | Nailing It

I know today is supposed to be a hair tutorial post, but Halloween is so close and I couldn’t help but share one more Halloween nail tutorial. There is no way that I would let Halloween pass without doing a pumpkin nail design, which is what I’m sharing today. These are a celebration classic and allow for so much creativity. Happy Halloween everybody!

Materials:

1) Base Coat

2) Top Coat

3) Orange Nail Polish

4) Green Paint

5) Black Paint

Procedure:

1) Begin by preparing your nails with a layer of base coat.

2) Start painting your nails a third of the nail away from the cuticle, leaving a significant gap. Paint your nails with two coats of orange polish.

3) Dip your small paint brush into green paint.

4) In the are between the cuticle and edge of the orange pumpkin, paint a small green stem.

5) Dip your paint brush into the black paint.

6) Use your creativity to add a face to the orange pumpkin part of your nail. Feel free to use either the same or totally different faces on each nail.

7) After all of the faces are done, add a thick layer of top coat.

Ghosts | Nailing It

10 DAYS UNTIL HALLOWEEN!!! I’m so excited to share yet another tutorial on some Halloween nail art. These ghosts are so fun and quick to do, plus are great for those of you who are not a huge fan of bright orange nails (but if you are -- don’t worry, I’ve got you covered in two weeks)!

Materials:

1) Base Coat

2) Top Coat

3) White Nail Polish

4) Black Paint

5) Large Dotting Tool

6) Small Paint Brush

Procedure:

1) Start by preparing your nails with a layer of base coat.

2) Paint two coats of white nail polish onto your nails.

3) Dip your small paint brush into the black paint.

4) At the tip of your nail, paint two small triangles. Be sure that the triangles go “off the nail”, meaning that the bottom side of the triangle is the nail edge itself. 

5) Dip your large dotting tool into the black paint.

6) Fairly close to the cuticle, add two side-by-side dots to be the eyes.

7) Again using the large dotting tool and paint, create a ghost mouth in the middle of the nail. Rather than having a round mouth, make it more oval-like in shape by lightly dragging down the dotting tool.

8) Re-dip your paint brush into the black paint and paint a thin black line along the entire tip of the nail. 

9) Use a layer of top coat to finish off the design.

Chevron Pins

Welcome to my first Sunday tutorial!! In case you missed it, my weekly tutorials are moving from Fridays to Sundays now. I had so much fun creating my last bobby pin hairstyle that I couldn’t help but make a second! I think colourful pins are one of the best ways to change up a basic hairstyle -- and it only takes a couple of extra minutes! Play around with different colour combinations to make the style truly yours.

Materials:

1) Brush

2) Hair Tie

3) Two bright colours of bobby pins (minimum of 4 of each colour)

Procedure:

1) Begin by tying your your hair into a slick middle ponytail.

2) On one side of your head near the front, place one colour of bobby pin on a diagonal angle.

3) Place a same-coloured pin directly below the first, but on an opposite diagonal so it makes a V-shape.

4) A half-inch behind the first set of pins, repeat steps 2 and 3 with a second colour of bobby pins. 

5) Go back to your first pin colour, and add another chevron shape behind the second.

6) Continue creating the chevron pattern as you move towards the back of your head, stopping once you reach the ponytail.
