I just realized that the great thing about friends to lovers is that you can end the story with a wedding and yet you know exactly how they'll be married because it will be the same as before, just with sex.
Best friends with added benefits
I think I had trouble grasping the appeal of friends to lovers until I realized that it's so easy to imagine their married life. I find it hard to imagine Elizabeth & Darcy, they are so different and we don't really see them interact amicably in the novel (except for the proposal and post-proposal confessions). How does a dinner look without them being at odds?
But Emma & Knightley? We know exactly what an evening would look like. We know how they can unite to keep conversation civil with their family. We know how it sounds when they mutually complain about someone (Frank Churchill and Mrs. Elton). We know some things that they both enjoy. It's so easy to imagine.
