I'm So Sincere | Barton + Barbara
A light, airy chuckle clicked in the back of her throat bringing with it another smile, this time just a bit wider. The breath she had been holding in released calmly from her lungs as she took a step to the side of the counter. Barbara rubbed her lips together, watching in peripheral vision as the next customer in line ordered.
“Not rude at all. It’s nice to meet you, Mattie. I’m Barbara.” The reply rolled off her tongue in a much more pleasant manner than her earlier comments. Less hostile, abundantly more cheerful. She connected their hands, giving it a hesitant, light shake before quickly letting her arm fall back to her side. The strap of her bag hanging low over her shoulder was nervously adjusted and readjusted.
“Do you make a habit out of buying strangers coffee?”
"It's a pleasure to meet you, Barbara," he drops his eye contact for a moment, then looks up. "As for making a habit of this- no not with every stranger."
The response came without missing a beat, his face lit up with a brilliant smile --- all part of his brilliant masquerade of course. He retracts his hand, shoving it into the pocket of his jacket as he mirrors her movement stepping to the side for the next customer.
"But if someone is giving off a vibe that they're not having the best of times? I don't mind doing what I can to try to cheer them up.
He looked away for only a moment, watching the barista prepping their drinks, before his eyes were back on her with his smile slipping to something softer.
"I like helping people, even if it's something small. I do a lot of charity work and put a lot of time into my daughter's school. It's why I chose my line of work as well..."
