Mt. Toubkal (Jebel Toubkal) Excursions

When you think of the Sahara, North Africa, or the sunny plains of Morocco, things like snow, ice, and crampons are usually not part of the picture. While climbing Mt. Toubkal (Jebel Toubkal or Jbel Toubkal in Arabic), the conditions quickly change from hot to sharp, on the cold mountainside. Towering 13,751 feet above sea level, Mt. Toubkal (sometimes written Mt. Tubkal) is not only the highest mountain in central Morocco, but also the highest in the Atlas and all of North Africa. It's a year-round accessible trail for a wide range of hikers, and it's more of a long, very steep walk than a technical climb.
