Punica Ambrosia
A type of flowering fruit tree, also known as "Eden's nectar" . This tree grows to about 5 to 20 feet tall, with branches than bend towards the ground at its ends, and a thick spiraling pillar. It blooms bright golden flowers, the petals shimmering like real gold, and with a very slight golden glow that can only be seen on dark nights. These flowers grow into pomegranate-like fruits (known as "golden pomegranates" or "forbidden nectar/fruits"), with a gold exterior and golden flesh inside. Despite the golden colour, the fruit juice inside these clusters is a deep dark red, remenicent of blood.
The fruit is decribed as sugary sweet, tasting like a mix of honey and fruits (like peach, pineapple, and pear). Despite what should be an overpowering sweetness, it has none of the negative side effects of sugar, like cancer sores or tooth aches.
Consuming the fruit gives the consumer a strong feeling of euphoria, placing them into a trance like state, and leaves their mind pliable and vulnerable to manipulation. The euphoria often causes the consumer to devour the entire fruit, often down to its last drop. Consuming the entire fruit leaves the consumer feeling full and satisfied, as if they've eaten a whole well-rounded meal, giving their body the same nutrional benefits of one as well. However attempts to consume a second soon after often lead to nausea and dizziness from the overload. Repeated consumption of the fruit will lead to the consumer being afflicted with "ambrosia flesh".
Only humans (and very few human-like species) seem to get this effect while eating them, as all other creatures have reported that it tastes rotten, like something festering and putrid.
Most of these trees are tended by a single Annelid Corvuscoatl.
Side effects: euphoria, trance, drunkeness, ambrosia flesh
Status: Extinct in wild, only kept in contained labs for testing
Ambrosia Flesh
A condition afflicted by consuming the fruit of a Punica Ambrosia. The afflicted's flesh and blood will smell and taste irresistibly sweet to any predatory species, especially mammals and man-eaters. However, the afflicted will be unable to notice their own sweetness, and other humans will only notice a slight sweetness and less prevalent iron smell. Despite the sweetness, the appearance of the afflicted's flesh and blood is unaltered by the condition.
The condition only appears to set in after repeated consumption, as consuming roughly 1-5 of the fruits leaves the consumer with little to no permanent side effects. Any more, especially if at a daily to weekly rate, will cause the condition to set in and worsen.
There is no known cure, with a 95% mortality rate within 5 years, due to predation (especially by Annelid Corvuscoatls).
A bitterant can be applied to the skin or consumed to reduce the chances of predation, as well as being careful to quickly cover up any wounds, as the smell is only noticeable if skin is broken.
Annelid Corvuscoatl
A serpentine avian species, also known as "eden serpents", only found roosting within the branches of Punica Ambrosia trees. They seem to have a symbiotic relationship with the tree, growing in size along with it, or perhaps vice versa. They have a long feathered body, with several sets of arms along it, a feathered crest on their head but no beak. They have a long, soft, non-threatening face, with a set of false herbivorous teeth, their true predator teeth hidden away until feeding. They typically range from 10 to 100 feet long, with the longest recorded being a massive 200 feet. They have a brightly coloured plumage, and are able to change it into a wood or leaf like pattern, allowing them to blend in with the tree when not wanting to be seen.
These predatory species eat a diet consisting exclusively of humans afflicted with ambrosia flesh. Due to their infrquenet feeding, they are often quite lax and will hibernate was undisturbed or a new possible victim is not around.
They are able to speak a soft feminine voice, often described as motherly, and usually use it to tempt humans into eating the fruit (if the human wasn't already trying to eat it on their own). While in the trance like state, it will give humans commands, often telling them to return tomorrow or their next earliest convienence, or to bring others that they trust to come enjoy the fruit with them. When they finally leave this state, they will often think such words were their own ideas, but will slowly also be more open to its commands even without the fruit's effects.
Once ambrosia flesh has set in however, they will mark their victim with a unique mark of harvest, assuring that only they are able to eat them, and masking their sweetness when far away.
There is no set time or amount of fruit before they will reap their harvest, usually depending on the amount of victims. Some of the larger ones have been known to start cults around themselves, leaving their most devoted and influsnetual alive to bring in more. Victims will usually give themselves up willingly, seeing it as earning their way back into heaven or something adjacent to it.
It is unclear if this species is all female (based on their voice), or is one singular gender. It's also unclear how they reproduce, as the trees have been found without one, but they've never been found without a tree.
