self-introduction

i'm learning just now that you can pin posts on your blog.. better late than never!

hi! i'm N. my TL (targuet language) is japanese, and has been for a long time – hence the "128" in my username, it's my nth attempt to learn this language regularly. i studied japanese seriously during high school, then dropped it when i entered undergraduate school, then picked it up again when i started my masters, then dropped it again... somehow, i never managed to find the motivation to study regularly, even though it's a language that i've been fascinated by ever since i was a pre-teen.

i was encouraged by Trenton's videos on youtube to start my language immersion journey. i figured i would start an "immersion log" blog to motivate myself and to keep consuming japanese-only content.

sidenote: english isn't my first language, so please 🐻 with me.

what i listened to:

独身アラサー女の毒ラジオ #145 || passive immersion || 25 minutes || understood: 5 %

note: the only thing i did understand was they talked about the series 'sex and the city' lmao... it's a new podcast i had saved for later but never actually listened to until today. according to the podcast's categorization they talk about relationships and dating life!

what i watched:

note: a day in the life of an ANA / airport ground staff member. useful grammar structure she repeated throughout the video was 「ですけれども」 which according to my research can mean two things: (1) but, however and (2) about, as to. the video is a great way to get used to the polite speech used by employees to address clients and/or colleagues (かしこまりました = used to say わかりました when addressing superiors), but also to read some katanaka FAST (i spent an eternity trying to figure out what ドアクローズ meant until they started closing the doors of the airplane 😆)

空はCA/海はAC || passive immersion || 30 minutes || understood: 30 %

note: 12 hours with two crew members on a cruise ship. the tone was overall less serious than the previous video, with the crew members goofing around sometimes, so it was a great watch!

total: more or less 2 hours and 45 minutes

commentary:

i'm glad i could listen and watch content that was a bit different than what i usually consume! + i love daily life stuff and learning more about other people's jobs so that was a win win. maybe tomorrow i'll have the motivation to start doing notes on akane-sensei's videos.

commentary:

i was a bit discouraged yesterday because i watched/listened to content that i very much did not understand, so today i tried to pick up videos that were a bit easier while still maintaining the immersion. the videos by akane-sensei on youtube (あかね的日本語教室) were great to ease myself back into the language! i then watched anime with japanese subtitles only on animelon. ナナ is an anime that is dear to my heart so i figured i would watch it for my immersion as well, plus i already know the plot so i was able to figure out what was being said.

i'm pretty proud of what i achieved today. in the future i will try to translate myself some anime episodes using only the japanese subs to try and break down the logic of the sentences.

japanese-immersion day #1 || 04.07.2025

it's actually not the first day per se since i started a couple of weeks ago but it is the first day of this log so here goes!

i'm a complete beginner in the ajatt community so any advice is appreciated, especially when it comes to formatting goals, duration of immersion, etc. one thing to note though is i intend not to judge myself too harshly if i can't attain x or y goal, i just want to enjoy this journey and record my progress, as small as it could seem when compared to others.

today i watched 30 minutes of a let's play video series i enjoy so far (so basically i watched the first part of the series). i understood probably 5 % ish of the video, i just got the idea that there is probably a cursed chair involved in the story plot lol
