We aren't encouraged to embrace our 40s, / 50s / 60s with any excitement. So we can lose confidence and self-esteem seeing the decline of our plump skin and pert bodies.
YET, for the last 23 years, I’ve spent hour after hour coaching women between 40-65, and I’m here to say it’s just the opposite.
It can be a beautiful transition into a time of power and insight. A time of mastery of things we’ve spent the whole first half of our life working toward.
So how can I get you excited about this second part of your life?
It’s your desires, instincts and intuition that will guide you into creating an impressive second half of life. If you cover up the feelings, you’ll never get what you want.
But here’s the sucker...
Your brain has two functions for survival. One is to predict and prepare you for what will happen, and the other is to protect you. Neither serves you when you want to try new things or make a change.
The first thing the brain is going to do is say “No” or “Don’t do that.” The brain wants certainty, to know it’s safe. It’s simply a prediction machine.
So I first teach my coaching clients how to let thoughts float by and not buy into them. Doing this helps to generate a new vision, a new idea, and a new set of possibilities for what can happen.
The truth is that anything you start to redesign your second half of life significantly is a series of actions and course corrections. This is the way you learn anything new.
I’ve had as many flops as I’ve had successes, and it’s about pushing through those things that don’t go well—and being able to evaluate them without shame or self-recrimination that gives us the resilience to do it again the next day.
It’s that feeling of judgment and shame that stops us from moving forward. Everything’s an experiment, and everything is an opportunity to learn.
Is this phase of your life something you are embracing or dreading?
