My greek corinthian helmet. I love history and as a Greek I'm interested a lot more about greek history which is so fascinating by many aspects.. One of them is the military part where the world met the hoplites.. A well trained and heavy armoured group of warriors forming a phalanx which this time with good coordination was very effective and deadly at close combat... This is the helmet they used to wear.. The whole looking of the helmet is amazing.. They came in different variations but this is of my favorite..so I gave it a try P. S. Greek God of Wine & the Grape Harvest Dionysus was the ancient Greek god of wine, winemaking, grape cultivation, fertility, ritual madness, theater, and religious ecstasy. His Roman name was Bacchus. As wine was a major part of ancient Greek culture, Dionysus was an important and popular figure in mythology. He was one of the twelve Olympians, although he was the last to arrive, and his unusual birth and upbringing marked him as an outsider. Earlier images and descriptions of Dionysus depict him as a mature male, bearded and robed holding a fennel staff tipped with a pine-cone. However, in later images the god is show to be a beardless, sensuous, naked or semi-naked androgynous youth.He was the son of ZEUS and the mortal Semele, making Dionysus semi-device or a hero. He was represented as a god of chaos and the protector of misfits. He was born in Thebes. He was born of fire and nursed by rain. Many festivals were held in honor of Dionysus: the Lesser or Rural Dionysia, the Greater or City Dionysia, the Anthesteria, and the Lenaea. Hector's farewell to his wife and son This is one of my favourite scenes in Homers Iliad where Hector the prince of Troy is ready to face Achilles in a final battle after the death of Patroclos.. It is a memorable moment, in which Hector displays a heart-breaking affection for his wife and son, alongside a tragic understanding that he will ultimately be unable to protect them. Hector’s wife Andromache makes a tearful speech to Hector, begging him to be more careful and stay behind the battlements more often. For with Hector gone she and her son will be alone in this world. Hector however is a hero in a warrior society and to stay behind the battle would mean disgrace for himself and his family. His response to Andromache reflects this: “Wife, I too have thought upon all this, but with what face should I look upon the Trojans, men or women, if I shirked battle like a coward? I cannot do so: I know nothing save to fight bravely in the forefront of the Trojan host and win renown alike for my father and myself. Well do I know that the day will surely come when mighty Ilius shall be destroyed with Priam and Priam’s people, but I grieve for none of these- not even for Hecuba, nor King Priam, nor for my brothers many and brave who may fall in the dust before their foes- for none of these do I grieve as for yourself when the day shall come on which some one of the Achaeans shall rob you for ever of your freedom, and bear you weeping away.” He accepts his death heroically,doing his duty as a Prince as a warrior as a father and husband.. Hephaestus Greek God of Fire and Metalworking Hephaestus was the god of fire, metalworking, stone masonry, forges and the art of sculpture. He was the son of ZEUS and HERA and married to APHRODITE by Zeus to prevent a war of the gods fighting for her hand. He was a smithing god, making all of the weapons for Olympus and acting as a blacksmith for the gods. He had his own palace on Olympus where he made many clever inventions and automatons of metal to work for him.  He is similar to ATHENA in his giving skill and help to mortals – in his case artists. It was believed that Hephaestus taught men the arts alongside Athena. However, he was also considered far inferior to that of the goddess of wisdom. Hephaestus was known as the God of Fire. Hephaestus was the only ugly god among perfectly beautiful immortals. Hephaestus was born deformed and was cast out of heaven by one or both of his parents when they noticed that he was imperfect. He was the workman of the immortals: he made their dwellings, furnishings, and weapons. In his workshop, Hephaestus had assistants who were made out of gold and who helped him with his work. His forge or workshop was located under a volcano, and the work he did within it caused frequent eruptions. Hephaestus was a patron of the arts. He was a kind and peace-loving god. In art, Hephaestus is usually depicted as bending over an anvil or walking with the assistance of a cane. Apollo God of the Sun, the Light, the Music and Prophecy Apollo is one of the most complex and important gods, and is the god of many things, including: music, poetry, art, oracles, archery, plague, medicine, sun, light and knowledge. He is the son of ZEUS and the Titan Leto, and was born in the Greek island of Delos, along with his older twin sister ARTEMIS – goddess of the hunt. Apollo is the ideal of the kouros, which means he has a beardless, athletic and youthful appearance. He is also an oracular god as a patron of Delphi and could predict prophecy through the Delphic Oracle Pythia. Both medicine and healing are associated with Apollo and were thought to sometimes be mediated through his son, Asclepius. However, Apollo could also bring ill-health and deadly plague. The nine Muses were companions of his; they were goddesses known for inspiring art and music. Apollo taught men the art of medicine, so he is often referred to as “The Healer.” Apollo is alternately referred to as the God of Light and the God of Truth. Apollo served as an intermediary between the gods and men. Because of his truthfulness and integrity, he was granted the gift of prophecy and oracles. The dolphin and swan were the animals sacred to him. The laurel, used in Greece as a status symbol, was Apollo’s tree. Penthesilea was an Amazonian Queen from Greek mythology. She was the daughter of Ares and Otrera and the sister of Hippolyta, Antiope and Melanippe.  One of many famous Amazonian Queens, Penthisilea’s story is one of fierce dedication to being a warrior, and a tragic death at the hands of Achilles. As an Amazon, Penthesilea was a member of a legendary race of warrior women.Penthesilea was highly skilled with weapons, she was very wise, and she was beautiful.While hunting one day, Penthesilea accidentally killed her sister Hippolyta with a spear. This caused Penthesilea a great deal of grief, and led her to wish for death. However, as a warrior, and an Amazon, she could only die honorably and during battle, so she decided to participate in the Trojan war with the side of the Trojans. During the war, Penthesilea was not a queen who sat by and watched the men fight. She was a warrior in the truest sense.  It is said that she blazed through the Greeks like lightning, killing many.  It is written that she was swift and brave, and fought as valiantly and successfully as the men. She wanted to prove that the Amazons were great warriors. She wanted to kill Achilles to avenge the death of Hector, and she wanted to die in battle. Although Penthesilea was a ferocious warrior, her life came to an end, at the hands of Achilles. Achilles had seen her battling others, and was enamored with her ferocity and strength.  As he fought, he worked his way towards her, like a moth drawn to a flame. While he was drawn to her with the intention of facing her as an opponent, he fell in love with her upon facing her. However, it was too late. Alexander meets the Indian gymnosophists Alexander invited to Taxila a number of Brahmin ascetics noted for their skill in answering philosophical questions with pithy wisdom. An account of the verbal skirmish is given by Plutarch; Alexander himself framed all the questions. “Which be the more numerous, the living or the dead?” “The living, for the dead are not.” “Which breeds the larger animals, the sea or the land?” “The land, for the sea is only a part of land.” “Which is the cleverest of beasts?” “That one with which man is not yet acquainted.” (Man fears the unknown.) “Which existed first, the day or the night?” “The day was first by one day.” This reply caused Alexander to betray surprise; the Brahmin added: “Impossible questions require impossible answers.” “How best may a man make himself beloved?” “A man will be beloved if, possessed with great power, he still does not make himself feared.” “How may a man become a god?” “By doing that which it is impossible for a man to do.” “Which is stronger, life or death?” “Life, because it bears so many evils.” Alexander succeeded in taking out of India, as his teacher, a true yogi. This man was Swami Sphines [?], called “Kalanos” by the Greeks because the saint, a devotee of God in the form of Kali, greeted everyone by pronouncing Her auspicious name. Kalanos accompanied Alexander to Persia. On a stated day, at Susa in Persia, Kalanos gave up his aged body by entering a funeral pyre in view of the whole Macedonian army. The historians record the astonishment of the soldiers who observed that the yogi had no fear of pain or death, and who never once moved from his position as he was consumed in the flames. Before leaving for his cremation, Kalanos had embraced all his close companions, but refrained from bidding farewell to Alexander, to whom the Hindu sage had merely remarked: “I shall see you soon in Babylon.” Alexander left Persia, and died a year later in Babylon.
