Introduction
Welcome to my blog, this blog is made for a college assessment for the implications in social media, this goes in depth from the history of social media to the societal issues that social media causes
Societal Issues of Social Media
Mobile devices dominate the total time in minutes spent online, the development of mobile devices has played in important role in shaping the use of social media, this puts being able to contact anyone, anywhere in the palm of your hand
Why People Share Information
These include a desire to reveal valuable and entertaining content to others; to define themselves; to grow and nourish relationships and to get the word out about brands and causes they like or support.
Social media is being used in ways that shape politics, business, world culture, education, careers, innovation, and more. almost a quarter of the worlds population is on Facebook
that being said, social media is also being blamed for things such as cyber bullying and lack of privacy, Unfortunately, by the time private content is deleted, itâs usually too late and can cause problems in peopleâs personal and professional lives.
Personal Dangers of Social Media
There are a lot of dangers on the internet, especially for a youngling, with so many social media sites accessible to young people, it gives them easy access to people they wouldnât normally talk to, some of these people could even be on the internet for nefarious reasons, pretending to be a lot younger than they really are, I think you can see where I am going with this, other dangers include identity theft, cyber bullying and theft of account details
there is so much more that could be done to protect our young ones, for instance, there is a minimum age limit on Facebook but sadly, it isnât enforced, no checks are done, the only time an account of a minor is removed is when someone reports the account, but not many people do as parents like to keep in constant contact with their children and this creates the problem of child molesters, but as mentioned above, this is just one aspect of the dangers of social media but I feel it is the most important one to be addressed
33% of teens are Facebook friends with other people they have not met in person.
Social networks and online gaming communities are leaving an increasing number of children and teens vulnerable to grooming and other forms of online harassment and abuse, the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (NSPCC) said.
Social Presence and Digital Footprint
Your social presence is built up of the social media sites you use and the content you share, like photos, comments, and videos, this creates a âdigital footprintâ this footprint increases in size the more you share and the more active you are on the internet, not just social media but shopping sites and video streaming services, all this information is recorded in your digital footprint and despite deleting your presence, your footprint remains as nothing is truly deleted on the internet.
Rights and Responsibilities
Law
There is no specific law in the United Kingdom which refers to social media alone, however; social media is protected by a number of laws such as the Malicious Communications Act of 1988, the Communications Act of 2003 (section 127), and the Criminal Justice and Police Act of 2001 (section 43). These laws all cover social media and other forms of electrical methods of communication including email.
Under these laws it is illegal to send âindecentâ or âgrossly offensiveâ messages, and/or send âthreatsâ, or âfalse informationâ with the intention of âcausing distress or anxietyâ to its receiver or receivers.
Furthermore, the Harassment Act of 1997 also plays a part in the protection of social media users and  if found guilty of sending such content by way of electrical communication (i.e. social media, email) you can face both a fine and up to a six month prison sentence.
Rights
With so many social media websites around each has different methods of protecting its users. The most popular way to protect yourself is by paying attention to the privacy settings and also blocking users who you do not wish to be able to communicate with you. Furthermore, the majority of social media sites give its users the ability to report an individual of cyber bullying or threatening behavior.
Furthermore, with the laws above protecting social media users, you also have the protection of both the police and UK legal system. Notifying, and providing the police with evidence to show that somebody has made you feel distressed and/or anxious on social media may be evidence enough to make a prosecution.
ResponsibilitiesÂ
an individuals responsible for all the content they post so it stands to reason that they need to be mindful of what they post as over 30% of teenagers have been affected by cyber bullying in their life, and this number is likely to increase, with the above laws, it is becoming easier to protect yourself online, but you can do your part by sharing safely and be conscious of what you are sharing, However, the best way to avoid any lawsuit from your use of social media is to limit the opinions you share on social media and never get involved bullying, celebrity or not. You should also think before you share, as once its shared its never completely deleted
Personal Learning Networks
Personal Learning Networks are a collection of social media platforms that let you create and collect shared knowledge with groups of connected people, from around the globe at any time, it is hugely dependent on social media to help form connections, expand our knowledge and constantly grow our professional persona through learning.
Social Media Uses
Social Media Uses for Individuals
This is a great way of keeping in touch with friends near and far, as well as sharing all aspects of ones life, from family photos to pictures of your dinner, social media is quickly becoming part of our every day lives, using our mobile phones on the go to update our status and communicate with others.
Social Media Uses for Groups
groups are more likely to use social media to share an interest, for instance, a Star Trek community, they talk about their interest and even plan gatherings, or use a group to sell things in the local area.
Social Media Uses for Businesses
Businesses are likely to use social media as an advertising tool, and a place to communicate with their customers, for instance, Amazon have a twitter account that they use for customer relations, dealing with problems customer have with their orders.
Social Capital
A shared understanding, shared norms, shared values, these things are what is included in the shared sense of identity, but you cant have any of these without trust, cooperation and reciprocity, but with the many different views on this complex subject make the definition difficult to describe
The value of resources are what the term usually refers to, from tangible (i,e buildings, public spaces) to intangible (i,e Actors, âhuman capitalâ people),the relationship these groups have, and on larger groups, is generally for the common good, producing public goods
from 1990 to 2000, the concept of social capital is becoming more and more popular in a wide range of social science disciplines and politics
Social Intelligence
Social Intelligence is all about making connections and relationships with others, for example, making strong relationships with people helps your immune system, loneliness is one of the prominent pointers for stress, health problems and depression.
our relationships affect every area of our lives, from our colleagues to our spouse, to our kids and friends
Social Production
Social Production: this usually happens via the internet, for instance, going to a concert and recording it to make it available on YouTube, then millions of people can watch the same concert that weren't there, this usually happens without people even knowing that it is happening, for instance, Wikipedia is where thousands if not millions of people are creating an encyclopediaÂ
