This photo kind of breaks my heart, and makes me proud of who I am now, all at once. It reminds me of how subtle it is when someone starts abusing you, isolating you, controlling your life.

Robert, my ex, and I had spent the entire weekend together but he had to leave to go take care of some work stuff. On my way home, K texted me and asked if I wanted to drive to Austin to spend the day at the river. I said yes and drove past my house, and hour and a half to Austin.

Robert was furious. He accused me of not caring for him because I’d go out of town, alone, to see my best friend. He told me she was going to turn me into a prostitute, that I’d end up cheating on him. He pleaded with me to turn around, that he would go to Austin with me if I wanted to go so badly.

I defied him and kept going. I had a great day. We went to the river and swam. We had drinks at Spider House. We went dancing. I felt great that I’d stood my ground. But then, on the way home, doubt and fear started to weasel in. Was I wrong? I’d hurt his feelings. I’d betrayed him. He’d had a long time to work on chipping away at my self esteem.

I’m not proud to know that I drew back from Katie, from all my friends. He became the only one in my life. Looking back, I’m horrified with myself. It’d take three more months for me to tell him off, to break away. And many months after that to not feel devastated by all the lies and manipulation.

Friends.

Abuse doesn’t always start out cut and dry. It starts small. It starts sneaky and conniving. It starts out disguised as love and concern. If your partner is isolating you, if they are making you feel like horrible human for not following their requests, if they obsess over where you are on a gps tracker they installed on your phone, if they demand the login info to your social media... that isn’t love. It is control. Get out. Get away. Right now.
