how did you get into the mbav fandom?

Thank you for asking this question! I feel so honored to be able to tell my mbav story again lol.

Originally when I watched the show air on Disney Channel I would talk about it with my friends on the playground and we would pretend we were vampires and wizards! I vaguely have memories of doing that. In 2015 I created my current Tumblr account and mbav was one of the tags I would casually look through and reblog stuff from along with my other middle school interests. Nothing too serious until I rewatched the show in Netflix and became obsessed. It was the show I forced all my little emo friends to watch with me and would write pages and pages of thought about in my silly little pop culture notebook. It had kind of become the "emo kid" series at my school and with my friends, along with Invader Zim and The Nightmare Before Christmas and such. I would still watch the show religiously every month by myself but I wouldn't talk about it too much, until 2020 happened and I decided to open up the ol' Tumblr account again. I went through all my old tags and went through the mbav tag again, which caused me to find the mbav Discord server and become hyper obsessed with the show again. I did a serious rewatch again and started posted fan content in fall of 2021, which I would've never done before. Before I knew it I had forced my friends to become fans as well and we started a podcast, and now I'm making an multiple hour long YouTube video about it and having a lot of fun. So ig isolation and years of hyper obsession is how I got into the mbav fandom, and it's been a lot of fun so far! It definitely made my 2022 a lot more bearable <3

But Why Vampires?

We are totally excited about the American premiere of My Babysitter’s a Vampire last Friday on Disney Channel. From the early reaction online, it looks like you guys loved it!

We can’t help but notice, though, that there have also been a lot of people out there asking “why vampires?” Yeah, I get it, isn’t the last thing we need right now another vampire movie? Well, honestly, that’s exactly why Fresh made it!

Let’s go back to summer 2008 here. Yep, that’s when the guys at Fresh first came up with the concept. At that time, the fourth book in a certain iconic vampire series was about to come out, with the first movie premiering later that year. The Fresh team could see this whole vampire thing was about to blow…

And that’s what we do at Fresh: First, we look at what’s huge with tweens and teens. Then we say okay, that’s cool – but how can we twist it around, turn it on its head, give it the Fresh spin? So My Babysitter’s a Vampire was about tapping into that vampire mania, then tackling it from a whole new angle – and aiming a playful nudge at fans of the genre at the same time. So your beautiful female human entry point is replaced with a couple of geeky guys. Being geeks, though, they know all the lore about horror and fantasy, and can spin all that to their advantage. Suddenly the guys who know way too much about sci-fi are surrounded by it – and wouldn’t you use all your pop culture smarts to save your skin (blood) if you were there, too?

So, why vampires? Because when something is this popular, it means it’s ripe for comedy. But hey – if vampires aren’t your favourite supernatural phenomenon, then check out the series. There will still be plenty of Ethan and Benny’s fanged friends around, but you can also expect werewolves (natch, can’t have vampires without ‘em nowadays), ghosts, zombies, zombie animals, evil dolls, evil clones, cheerleaders…Every ep will play a little with a different horror genre or trope.

Brendan: The fans know a lot about the actors on the show but not nearly as much about the other people who make it happen. In your own words, what do you do?

Tim: What do I do? I ask myself that on a daily basis!

I was involved in this project starting shortly after ‘ground zero’. Tom [McGillis] and Jen [Pertsch] had had the original idea for Babysitter; I think they’d come up with that with Brian [Irving] and George [Elliot]. But it was quite different when it first started. They already had this fantastic three page pitch about the fundamentals of what the series is, all the core ideas for the story. I came in about early 2009 when Fresh TV wanted to do the movie. I looked at what they had and I had some ideas of my own that involved adding some characters and changing some characters.

Brendan: How did the characters change from that initial story idea?

Tim: If I think back to the original, original pitch, I think Ethan was a bit more of an average, skateboard-crazy, everyman kid. I’m more of a geek; I ate at the nerd table in the cafeteria and I had my nerdy friends and we were always on the outside so I pitched a version that was a little more about these outsiders. I think the central idea for me was that they could be getting chased by vampires, they could be about to be killed, but if one of those vampires was a good looking girl they’d be just as excited about that as seeing a vampire. I think that’s a tough decision when you’re young! That was where I started, drawing from my own background. I brought that into the movie when I wrote it.

Brendan: What were the biggest changes to the concept itself?

Tim: Ideas like the Benny’s grandmother being a wiccan earth priestess started to spin into it because I mistakenly thought the vampire craze would have played itself out two years from then. I thought that Twilight was so huge that two years from then people would be so sick to death of vampires so I said it shouldn’t be just a vampire show, it should be a world that combines the best of all those mythological creatures so we could do a werewolf episode, so we could do trolls or pixies and vampires are just part of that ‘family’. That’s why I liked the idea of Benny as the spellmaster and Ethan with his seer abilities and expanding the world so every week it wouldn’t just be, “Oh no, you’re a vampire!”
