i don't rly like horror but want to try some what shud i watch
omg hi anon. where to start??? horror is such a vast genre and there are so many types of subgenres (psychological horror, slashers, ghosts, monster, bodyhorror, etc;) so it really depends on what you like in other movies. it also depends if you're up for movies with blood/gore and how much you want to see it.
an easy starting point might be classic horror, horror comedies, horror thrillers or horror movies that are made for family viewing. i'm also just going to focus on movies that should be easy to find to watch and english movies (but i can def rec non-english ones too).
universal monster movies: if you don't mind watching old movies i think this is a great place to start. dracula (1931), frankenstein (1931), and the mummy (1932) are some of my favourites. these movies also became their own cinematic universe with several sequels. also speaking of the mummy the movies with brendan fraser are also so much fun!
classic horror movies: a few more black and white movies but i think due to restrictions on film at the time (the hayes code) i think these can be a super safe entry point to horror and i think they're often a lot more creative than modern movies because they had to work around these restrictions. psycho (1960), a classic for a reason. gaslight (1944) this movie is actually where that term in the sense of manipulation comes from. night of the living dead (1968), this is the film that truly set the standard for how we view modern day zombies it was also huge at the time for having a black lead. some classic colour movies: halloween (1978) the ultimate low budget movie - no seriously, jamie lee curtis wore her own clothes and the iconic mask was legit just a william shatner star trek mask that was painted white. a nightmare on elm street (1984) one of my favourite movies ever so i might just be biased here.
horror comedies: i know comedy is subjective so i'm going with movies that are actually classified as this. scream (1996) this one is a self aware comedy which was meant to parody slashers but ultimately ended up being the modern day standard for them. ready or not (2019) basically a woman goes up against a group of evil rich people and wrecks havoc on them love that for her. zombieland (2009) it's basically a road trip comedy with zombies. the final girls (2015) a group of friends get sucked into a horror movie and have to find their way out, it's super funny but also made me cry. freaky (2020) a body swap comedy where a teenage girl switches bodies with a serial killer.
horror thrillers: red eye (2005) most of this movie takes place on a plane and it's so well done and creepy. one hour photo (2002) if you ever wanted to see robin williams be scary then this is the movie for you. a perfect getaway (2009) two couples go on a tropical vacation and then realize one of them might be a serial killer.
family horror: or what some would call children's horror... but i hate that term lol. hocus pocus (1993) there is a reason why the disney channel airs this very year! coraline (2009) we don't talk about the author who's book this is based on though fuck him a gorgeous and creepy stop motion directed by the guy who did... the nightmare before christmas (1993) i never know if this is a halloween movie or a christmas movie but i love it either way. beetlejuice (1988) this might be more of a comedy but i kind of associate it with being a family movie. paranorman (2012) a super underrated movie and another stop motion one. i think stop motion and horror just work so well together.
bonus round: i know what you did last summer (1997), get out (2017), it follows (2014), sinners (2025), host (2020), i saw the tv glow (2024) and urban legend (1998).
BONUS BONUS: the texas chainsaw massacre (1974) HEAR ME OUT this movie is nowhere near as graphic as it's reputation is. there is actually very little on screen gore. what's brilliant about this movie is in what it doesn't show you, it shows you just enough so you know what happens and is shot in a way that lets your imagination run wild so it feels like it's more intense than it actually is.

For the first time in my life, I realized telling the truth was way different from finding the truth, and finding the truth had everything to do with revisiting and rearranging words. Revisiting and rearranging words didn’t only require vocabulary; it required will, and maybe courage. Revised word patterns were revised thought patterns. Revised thought patterns shaped memory. I knew, looking at all those words, that memories were there, I just had to rearrange, add, subtract, sit, and sift until I found a way to free the memory.
