3. I chose my song “Strange Fruit,” by Billie Holiday, because it represents the sadness and disruption of racism and in America. It represents lynching and how it affected the black community. This song related to chapter 5 which is also based on Race and Racism which talks about racial categories and how it is constructed around the world. - Hannah Robison
4. The song black Korea is about being a black person not being able to do anything outside without being accused of a crime. Chapter 5 Fieldwork
1. Jim Crow Laws
Jim Crow laws were a set of laws introduced in the late 1870’s after the reconstruction period. These laws enforced and encouraged racial segregation in the south. In the picture above we can see a sign stating “colored waiting room”. Majority of public places were separated into white and black areas , to ensure the separation of whites and blacks to abide by Jim Crow laws. Colored areas were notoriously known for being in worse conditions then whites. Other places that Jim Crow laws enforced separation of races included schools , public restrooms , restaurants, movie theaters and libraries. The end of Jim Crow laws started to end with the case Brown vs The Board of education which demanded the integration of public schools.
2. White Supremacy
White supremacy is the idea that the white race is biologically superior to other races. In the media below the KKK is pictured. Groups like the KKK were founded based on white supremacy. The KKK is a white supremacy terrorist group in the United States that has committed many acts of violence against black people. The most recent act of terrorizing they have committed is participating in a riot in Charlottesville Virginia where many injuries were done and 1 death occurred. The KKK uses rhetoric and white supremacy logic , by using old and now proven false scientific evidence.
3.Intersectionality
Intersectionality
4.Genotype
Genotype is the genetic make up of an organism. Genotype is a specific variant of a gene that can be expressed as symbols in genome. In the media below we can see genotypes being expressed through blood types. The phenotype is being expressed on the left column which shows us which blood type the person would be labeled. While the genotype is expressed on right and it express each specific gene labeled as symbols such as AO , BB, AA , etc to show us how each specific variant will make up a phenotype.
5. Phenotype
Phenotypes are the genetic portion that can observed. In other words it’s what we can see to the human eye. Examples of phenotypes can be hair color , eye color , skin color and blood types. In the media below we can see phenotype being expressed through eye color.Eye-color is expressed through various genes or alleles (genotypes) being crossed together to make a specific color. We know that this is phenotype because we can observe it with our eyes.
After completing this assignment I realized that I am very involved with American consumer culture. I am willing to buy things to fit in with the cultural norms and trends such as I phones , Nikes, and other popular miscellaneous items. During this assignment I realized that most of my list were things I wanted and Not things that I necessarily needed. I found it difficult to discern between my wants and needs. There were a lot of items on my list that I knew I did not need in order to survive but I counted them as needs because I realized how difficult my life would be without them. I think consumer culture plays a big role in things that we deem necessary , for example my car. I know that a car isn't necessary to survive but in consumer culture it is a high demand product that is often deemed as a necessity. After completing this assignment I was really able to reflect on the role I play in consumer culture and appreciate the privilege I have to own many items
Making The Familiar Unfamiliar
The History
The history of soap started long ago in ancient Babylon. It is believed that the first soaps were made from animal fats and ashes which were reduced and boiled into a liquid form. The first uses of soap were not for cleaning skin but it was used for cleaning wool, cooking utensils and medicinally. Overtime soap continued to develop and scientists and inventors were able to use chemicals such glycerin to produce it at a quicker and more efficient rate. In 1865 the first hand soap was made and put into the markets. Today, there are a variety of soaps such as hand soap, laundry detergent , dishwashing liquid and body wash. The item pictured here is Dove Soap. This american company was founded by the Lever Brothers in 1957. The first product released was the Lever Brothers' Dove Beauty Bar. The beauty bar was iconic for being ¼ moisturizer. In 1960 Dove expanded and used its first slogan “Real Women” to help market the product to women which was popular during the 60’s. Today Dove which is owned by Unilever is an iconic brand that sells soaps ,shampoos ,body washes , hair care products and much more! This company prides itself on redefining beauty and uplifting women.
Manufacturing
To my surprise dove is made here in the United States. Well at least the Dove that we can buy, Dove has factories in 39 countries including the Us . In each country the soap is tailor made in that specific country and is shipped only within that country . The largest manufacturing factory in the US is in Hammond, Illinois.
Impact on Me
Personally I use dove soap everyday. I have very sensitive skin and can not use a variety of soaps. using dove soap helps me feel confident that I can have clean skin free from blemishes, rashes and breakouts.
The Impact On Others:
This product is made here in the United States so the production process is one that most are familiar with. The United States factory is Vincennes, Indiana. Vincennes is a small town with a population of less than 20,000 residing there. Life for people that work there is probably what the average working class family. On Average factory employees make twenty-nine thousand dollars per year. That is not a livable wage for most Americans in a single home family.
Key Dynamics Of Globalization
Time Space Compression : Theory of rapid innovation of communication and transportation technologies. It has changed the way we think of distance and time.
2. Flexible Accumulation: Refers to how companies have capitalized on communication and transportation technology to maximize profits. For example through outsourcing companies can have products in factories for cheaper rates then in the US.
3. Increasing Migration: Refers to accelerated migration within communities, countries and globally. Typically migrants are looking to move to urban and more developed communities.
4. Uneven Development: Refers to globalization not equally benefiting all groups. Often resulting in extreme wealth and poverty
