Voltron-Keith and mullets

I'm super confused about what a mullet actually is. Even just a slight change in length makes the cut look very different and in some cases, it makes it look like a completely different cut.

Like, I saw many wolf cuts being referred to as mullets, and vice versa. Heck, I even saw Korean perms being listed as mullet styles... so I really don't know. Sometimes it's so obvious but most of the time it is not like that. I mean, I see how those styles can be considered mullets but just by looking at them in passing, mullet would be my last guess...

And it's kinda the same for Keith in VLD.

Like, original Keith/Akira has a mullet. Even though literally all of them seemed to have very similar cuts in that version, the creators still took the effort to make his hair a bit different, more choppy with layers and stuff.

Then we have Voltron Force Keith, his mullet might be the most obviously mullet-y. (Though, I do think that it looks... kind of terrible, but it's probably just because I'm not a fan of mullets (I mean the recognisable ones)). But anyway, this mullet is so obvious that even I can see the mullet clearly, so yeah. XD

However, VLD-Keith is a bit different. When I started the show, I had no idea what a mullet was. So I googled it. Then I was like: "Lance, are you sure you don't need glasses?"

After my more in-depth "research", that just made more confused, I settled with a "It must be a 'Korean-perm-mullet' - his VA is Korean, it... makes sense". (Don't mind my lack of logic.)

But it just kept bugging me as I watched the show. His hair seemed to be pretty much the same length everywhere, as if he had a buzzcut and then just let it grow out with just some occasional trims. It just didn't look like a.... "deliberate" mullet, if that makes sense.

So I went ahead and checked... and his hair literally looks the same as what a little less than a year's hair growth would look like starting from a buzzcut. For an average human. And it does look a bit mullet-y.

Yes, I'm aware that Keith had this hairstyle from day one and we see this in literally every flashback just at slightly different lengths. However, we only see a few snippets of his past and he obviously had haircuts in-between 'cause he would look like Rapunzel otherwise.

Headcanon:

So what if his Galra genes make his hair grow really fast? What if it reaches this length in just a month or two? What if he and his dad made it a habit to let it grow to this length or so and then just shave it all off every time. Like, the "style" suits him and this method would keep his hair healthy. (And it's certainly easier and more cost-effective than going to a salon every 1-2 week(s).)

And honestly, we don't see much of their life in Space. It's only a few episodes out of a whole year (before their 1st return to Earth). For all we know, Keith could have shaved his head multiple times "off camera" without us ever knowing. Though, they clearly had a way to manage/maintain their hair because they would have all looked like clone-Shiro with his long hair by the time they returned to Earth if they didn't... so it's possible he only did it before Voltron and then enjoyed the free services of the castle or whatever.

On this note, how did they manage their hair in Space? Did they cut it for each other? Did Coran do it for them? Did the castle have some special machine? I think it was Coran. XD

Meet my OC:

Kieran Asahi Riv Kogane, Keith's older brother

Little name explanation:

So, since everything is fair in love, war and fanfics, I took the liberty to create my version of Keith and Riv's family by borrowing stuff from "other versions" of Voltron and the fandoms, such as:

the surname Kogane (and the first name Akira)

Keith's dad's name being Kenneth (well, his English name)

Keith full name being 'Keith Akira (Yorak) Kogane'

the idea of having all family members have K initials

....and so on.

So the Kogane family is like this:

Kenneth Akihiko Kogane

Krolia 'Kogane'

Kieran Asahi Riv Kogane

Keith Akira Yorak Kogane

A little more about Riv:

Riv is 8 years older than Keith. (Krolia spent about 12 years on Earth.)

He's very... purple which makes him look Galra enough already but he also has big fluffy ears, cat-like eyes as 'markings', you know, just to make sure. » We all know that Krolia has more... elvish(?), elongated and pointed ears and Dad Kogane had normal human ears so you may ask - where did the big, fluffy ears come from? Well, my friend, genetics are funny. "According to Krolia", he likely got his ears from one of his grandparents -- same goes for his white hair.

Despite generally looking more Galra, his nose looks more human than Keith's... or at least looked, before he broke it during training.

Only his ears have a thin layer of fur. The rest of his body is bare. He has less body hair than an average human (regardless of gender) which is a bit odd considering that he's supposed to be a mammalian-type Galra.

Just like Keith, he also has super thick and long (and straight) eyelashes, just in white. The colours are also very similar. In fact, probably the eyes are their the most similar features.

Riv has retractable claws. Yes, it's a bit bizarre.

He has a cute BoM earring/helix ear cuff thingy. It senses and signals to him if a fellow Blade is nearby. When destroyed, it sends out a distress message to the HQ. It also tracks his location and gives automatic updates on his whereabouts to Kolivan and Krolia. The latter fuction is for minors/young adult members. /For safety reasons, while all Blades are tracked, their locations are not shared with/sent to anyone automatically./

Keith and he are both pretty much "in the middle" with how Galra or human they are. » Keith has long limbs, especially hands, for a human while Riv has short limbs for a Galra - but they are still longer than a human's. » While Keith is really sturdy, resilient and strong for a human, Riv is considered to be rather fragile, slightly sickly and somewhat weak compared to other Galra.

He might be weaker than "normal" but he's faster, more agile, more flexible and has slightly better reflexes than many Galra. (It's the result of a specific combination of slightly mutated genes rather than an advantage that purely comes from being part-human.)

He can make himself look mostly human, much like how Keith gets Galra traits when experiencing intense emotions. » Just like how I "took inspiration" from other shows for the names, I also got some backstory/lineage inspo. I already mentioned in my previous post that in the Voltron Force show, Keith's great-grandfather was Arusian/Altean... and it's the same in my version. » So, Riv (and to some extent Keith as well) is capable of shapeshifting thanks to his Altean ancestry. Though, unlike Allura who has a wider range, both Keith and Riv are limited to shifting between their Galra and human appearances and neither look is "perfect". » Having nearly full control over this shapeshifting power takes a lot of practice and requires emotional stability and a certain level of maturity, that's why Keith is not even fully aware of having this ability. » Riv only "recently" perfected his human form and managed to hold it for extended periods. » When he finally achieved consistent results with his shifting practice, his first thought was to try and convince Krolia and Kolivan to let him visit Keith (and their dad :() -- In the end, he left without permission.

Btw, he looks so old and haggard because he's tired - it's certainly not because of my poor drawing/shading skills. Baby is not yet 18 in human years.

This is our Voltron: Legendary Defender rewrite! This is a current work in progress with 160 chapters, and we do have another rewrite currently ongoing. For our main author, this has been a passion project for over 3 years now. We are mainly using this blog to get it out there, and recruiting betas once we get closer to actually writing.

Our major themes that we will be addressing throughout the series will be identity, choice, teamwork, and the consequences and effects of war from multiple different perspectives. We are not currently on Ao3, but will be when we get to that point of our process.

Our major author is Sol (@packcoventhing), who uses it/he pronouns. He loves character interactions, development, and personality showcases. He’s also a digital artist, and if there are any digital images in this that are not cited, they likely come from his art app! He’s 19 years old and absolutely insane about Doctor Who and Voltron (obviously. why else would we be here).

Our co-author is Lief (@sfhppjmc), who uses they/it pronouns. They like evolutions of relationships, culture, influences of anything around them, and adding in representation of all kinds. They are 18 years old and loves Doctor Who, recently recruited to hell. They only recently finished watching VLD after being dragged.

Allura gets the character development the show pretended she had

Adam's existence and death will make an impact on Shiro and Keith

We will meet and interact with Galra citizens

Voltron will not be created by Alfor

The story takes place over a longer length of time for the paladins

I can't believe I'm sharing my fanarts/headcanons as my very first actual post here – in fact, I can't even believe I'm posting anything at all – but here we are. The time has come, I'm willingly sharing my "art", expose my interests and admit to being part of certain fandoms... Well, at least most people on tumblr do the same so I'm not alone. XD

Little... story time? Warning? - Welcome to the blabbering corner:

Soooo..... The new AtLA movie just came out, right? Well, after watching it, I obviously had to rewatch the show but then came the usual "slump", the "I want more like this but nothing feels right" phase...

So, after coming up with an OC and a nonsensical plot for an ATLA fanfiction that I will likely never actually write/finish... the universe took pity on me and kindly offered an alternative to obsess over: 'Voltron: Legendary Defender'. (Special thanks to Zukka-Klance shippers.)

Unfortunately, despite the promisingly large number of seasons... I was back to square one in about two days.

Once again, being torn between reading fanfiction and writing some... I ended up going down the pinterest-tumblr-fandom wiki rabbit hole... and evetually I got... inspired by all the fanarts and decided to draw some stuff for my VLD fanfic... that I will likely never write.🥲

Now, please note that:

- the last time I drew anything was before Covid (and I wasn't particularly good at it even back then; in fact, I only drew during art classes so don't expect much);

- this is pretty much my first attempt at digital art (though I doubt it would have been any better on paper - only the shading would be a bit more okay) and drawing on my phone with my quiznaking fingers was... crazy. I don't understand how modern artists can do it —and do it so well. It's a nightmare, really;

- this is my very first attempt at drawing fanart (through any medium) as well

- I can't draw hair. I never could;

- I know that the eyelashes look... funny, and I also left out the tearlines... but it was 1am and I was lazy and seeing double already;

*I'm certainly not writing all this random stuff just for the "show more" button to show up and hide my art. Yeah, certainly.*

About the fanarts:

So what's "changed" (or not) compared to "canon" designs? - Headcanons, random details and others:

>First we have Keith:

I love to think that the Galra usually have really flat noses. (Kinda like the blue people in the Avatar movies but more human..?)

I also made his ears very slightly pointy because despite being (at least) half-alien, he looks awfully normal and human.

His hair is raven-black with a rather strong blue hue (which is neutralized by his overly orange environment on Earth but becomes more apparent when they are in space but the others just assume it's the lighting XD).

He has upturned, angular, cat-like violet eyes that look black in most lighting. /They also reflect light in the dark just like cat eyes, especially when he's experiencing strong emotions since it makes his Galra-traits come out more./

+When his Galra-traits really come out, his sclera turns yellowish and his pupils turn kinda vertical.

His eyelashes are long, straight and super thick giving him a natural eyeliner-look. (However, bc his lashes are straight, from the front, they look short and can only be observed in their full glory from the sides or when he closes his eyes.)

The duality of his beautiful, sparkly eyes: they can look all sharp and dangerous but also round and puppy-like, melting hearts left and right.

He has a very strong jaw with a killer jawline.

Also, see the cute little necklace? So, when I was "researching" where the fandom got the surname 'Kogane' from, I stumbled upon the Voltron Force show and some interesting information. !!SPOILER!! In that version of Voltron, Keith's great-grandfather (I think) was Arusian - aka Altean in the VLD-setting - and I thought, if we can steal his last name, then we can steal some backstory as well. Like, there's no rule that says you can only be one kind of alien. Thus, my Keith became half-Galra, part-human and part-Altean.

Bonus things that are not visible on the fanart:

~ his arms are longer than average, that's why he usually crosses them or puts them into his pockets - he tries to hide how awkward his proportions are (after learning about his Galra heritage, he slowly gains some confidence and does it less often but habids die hard)

~ his canines are slightly bigger, stronger and sharper (?) than normal

He has a very pale, olive-ish skin tone that turns a little bit purple-gray when his Galra-traits come out

*I don't really get what a mullet is, but yeah, he obviously has that, too. (But really, what is a mullet? I literally saw a freaking collage or wathever with just different mullets put together and I still don't get it. It almost feels like people label every slightly longer or unusual cut as mullets if they can't put them in another cathegory...? I'm so confused? Or maybe I'm... hair-blind? Style-blind? Help.

Also, in the original show his hair looks more mullet-y(?) compared to what we see in VLD - I'll might make another, much shorter post about it XD)

Honestly, I mainly drew him because I thought his hair was chopped in the show. XD I'm sorry. /This is just my personal opinion and I fully respect if y'all like it, I can see the potential... it's just not my thing./

But seriously, I saw that he was Cuban... and then I searched up Cuban guys 'cuz why not... and it was just not it. Like, pinterest attacked me with those gorgeous wavy- and curly-haired GODs, trying to convince me that Lance is one of them... pfft (I know that the internet only shows the best of the crop and in a stereotypical way at that... but still. )

And then I double checked his family and literally everyone, except for his niece and nephew maybe, had at least slightly curly/wavy hair and I just felt betrayed

Unfortunately, my non-existent skills did not help him... I might have made him even more chopped... But anyways, the point is that I'm team curly-haired Lance.

Headcanons?:

[I came up with two possible reasons why his hair was so... erm... lame: 1. He cut it really short in hopes that it would be easier to manage after he moved into the Garrison-dorms. (Though I feel like he's too much of a diva to do that voluntarily...) 2. His genes just... suck. /Otherwise it's just poor design choice.../]

As for my Lance... his hair is really curly (and a bit longer than in the show) but he prefers it wavy so he spends a ton of time carefully styling it. It looks a bit messy but it's deliberate.

He has a long inverted triangle face shape. It's especially obvious how elongated his face is next to Pidge's round head and Keith's roundish heart-shaped face.

His chin is almost comically "sharp"/pointed

His nose, too, has a very sharp and clean shape.

He's basically all sharp and pointy. XD

His eyes - unlike the rest of his face - have a rather round almond-shape. They are slightly downturned puppy eyes.

Everyone in his family has thick, long, and curled eyelashes (even more beautiful than Keith's)- except for him. And it makes him furious. They are still pretty, only comparing it to the rest of his family's make them less so.

While he doesn't have thick eyelashes, he does have thick eyebrows. They look good on him but he personally thinks that they are "too much" so he meticulously plucks and shapes them until they have a dramatic arch.

He has full lips.

His ears are actually pretty big.

His neck is very long and thin, giving him an elegant (and frankly, a bit feminine) vibe.

+I bet he would love wearing bracelets and/or anklets.

*I feel like freckles would suit him... maybe I'll add some later. Hmm

>And finally we have Pidge:

First of all, I forgot her glasses XD Sorry, it wasn't intentional

Her hair is shorter than in the show. It's like a really short pixie cut.

Like in the show, I guess, her hair is mostly straight but the ends have a slight wave/curl - it kinda makes her look like she has a permanent bedhead.

She has a round face... and just generally a very round head.

Her eyes are really big and round but they appear smaller due to sleep-deprivation (Like, they are a bit puffy and she also squints a lot because of the light... and stuff)

She also has semi-permanent dark circles because of all-nighters (I didn't really dare to add them)

When she smiles without her teeth (like, those snarky little smiles and such), she only lifts the corner(s) of her lips

She has a cute, slightly upturned button nose

Her ears are pierced but everyone just assumed it's an edgy, rebellious thing or a simple preference

While they are in space, her hair will grow relatively fast - by the time they send her dad back to Earth (about 1 year after finding the blue lion), her hair will be slightly longer than Matt's, so kinda like a longer bob...?

/Oh, yeah... Erm, pls, don't judge my English. It's not my first language and I only really "use" it to watch shows and read fanfics. Fanfics that have questionable grammar. XD It's also late, I can't see, I haven't slept properly for days and my keyboard is really sensitive so it just types whatever. XD I'm also too lazy to reread this whole... essay-length nonsense just to correct some mistakes... so yeah. Don't judge./
