Welcome!

This is our Voltron: Legendary Defender rewrite! This is a current work in progress with 160 chapters, and we do have another rewrite currently ongoing. For our main author, this has been a passion project for over 3 years now. We are mainly using this blog to get it out there, and recruiting betas once we get closer to actually writing.

Our major themes that we will be addressing throughout the series will be identity, choice, teamwork, and the consequences and effects of war from multiple different perspectives. We are not currently on Ao3, but will be when we get to that point of our process.

Our major author is Sol (@packcoventhing), who uses it/he pronouns. He loves character interactions, development, and personality showcases. He’s also a digital artist, and if there are any digital images in this that are not cited, they likely come from his art app! He’s 19 years old and absolutely insane about Doctor Who and Voltron (obviously. why else would we be here).

Our co-author is Lief (@sfhppjmc), who uses they/it pronouns. They like evolutions of relationships, culture, influences of anything around them, and adding in representation of all kinds. They are 18 years old and loves Doctor Who, recently recruited to hell. They only recently finished watching VLD after being dragged.

We are changing most of the plot

The endgame ships are Klance, Hunay, Shalluratt, and side Ezor x Zethrid

(The primary author, Sol, is gay. He also has a handful of fixtional women he'd date if they were real. Shiro can date alien princess and his friend all he wants.)

Lotor has been overhauled and has been given a redemption arc

Keith and Acxa are twins

Pidge will be genderfluid

Keith and Lance and Romelle are trans

Technology will become (hopefully) more based in actual theoretical physics

Altean magic system will be overhauled and given an actual structure (gasp!)

The lions CAN and WILL turn into actual lions

The relationships between the main team will become more developed and more important

Shiro's PTSD and disability will be handled in a more respectful and realistic manner

Allura gets the character development the show pretended she had

Lotor's redemption arc DOES NOT involve a romance arc

Adam's existence and death will make an impact on Shiro and Keith

We will meet and interact with Galra citizens

Voltron will not be created by Alfor

The story takes place over a longer length of time for the paladins

i actually find your reasoning for trans keith and trans lance interesting because its the exact opposite for me. trans keith is representation that doesn't affect his character arc because his identity struggle in the show has always been about his race (as a poc it hits hard with him finding out his galran heritage) and lance's trans identity actually affects his character arc. to me he started out with some toxic masculinity because of his gender dysphoria and need to be a "man" but as he grows in the show he realises he doesnt need to put up a front for his identity to be valid

This is an equally fun take! I took the opposite direction because in the experiences of my friends who actually have weight in the conversation (since I'm about the whitest kid you can find), the struggle with their genders often goes pretty hand-in-hand with their racial struggles. It was less about what canon did, and more that the struggles with gender add to the overall theme of identity that is Keith Kogane.

With Lance he definitely is that way to an extent! But I think overall with what we're doing with him (his core character themes are confidence and family), his transness ties less into the core theme of his character and more into just who he is. If that makes any sense?

It's cool to see other perspectives on it, though!

is rewrite going to let the paladins actually be teenagers with gross puberty and awkward experiences?

YES!

3/5 of the paladins are older teens, Lance and Hunk starting at 17 and Keith at 18, but that doesn't mean they're fully developed and realized adults lmao. Pidge starts at a cool 14 years old, and that makes it a very fun process to show her going through puberty in real time.

Keith also, on top of 18 not being fully developed (I stand by this), has his Galra Puberty. Since Galra aging works differently, it started later, and is really only just setting in when we start the series. So Keith gets to embody moody teen lmao.

Shiro's pretty much the only paladin who behaves like an adult, because well, he is one. Allura does too but she's not a paladin for very long.

will the castle have a dedicated farming area? surely some of the foods they come across will be plants they can recreate the conditions for, and doubtless some planets would be happy to share crops with the castle crew. so it never made sense to me why the show only ever added kaltenekker in that vein, no shot the paladins wouldn’t jump on opportunities to have steady food sources besides goo 😭 especially with pidges mom being a botanist she definitely knows how to plan a garden and iirc lance comes from a farming family so hello ?? lmao this bugs me far more than it should. thanks for reading my nonsense

YES the castle will have a dedicated farming area! Keith and Hunk are the main two to work in it actually, with occasional appearances from Pidge and Lance.

Pidge was never really into their mom's gardening, so they didn't retain a lot of it, but still. Sometimes it's nice to walk around in the farms and be reminded of her mom's old projects. After the Olkari arc he spends a lot more time here, having a better understanding of nature.

Lance did come from a farming family, and he would totally help around the farm more! He's used to the chores, animal and plant related alike, but frankly the way Keith glares at him when he gets near Kaltenecker turns him away for a long while. Lmao.

Hunk, when he still lived in Samoa that is, would grow some of his own vegetables. Taking that knowledge, mixing it with what the others knew, and applying it to alien life actually gave him a pretty nice hobby for when he probably shouldn't be cooking fifteen times a day.

Keith is an interesting one to me because him and his dad literally lived ages away from... anything? His dad likely had to drive for ages just to go to work. In my heart of hearts Keith was an FFA kid because of this, they had a small barn and a homestead of crops. Keith used to very frequently fall asleep in the barn next to his lamb and he now does the same thing with Kaltenecker.
