a gift between champions | Lance and Steven
Lance laughed, and slowed down. Sometimes, he forgot that not all champions were unnecessarily competitive like he was. Once he was at a more comfortable pace, he inclined dragonite to fly closer to skarmory and punched Steven in the arm playfully. “Oh come on Steven, you know me… first off, we both know I wouldn’t go fast enough to mess up my hair unless absolutely necessary. And secondly, you know if you challenge my dragonite’s speed, whether joking or not, I have to prove you wrong. It’s a matter of principle. And yes, I know where I’m going.” Lance winked and grinned mischievously. “But hold a conversation eh? Could it be that you missed me?”
He was poking fun at Steven for wanting to talk, but in all honesty, he had missed his friend more than words could say, and would love to spend as much time as possible catching up. Although Steven was perhaps a bit sheltered by wealth, there was no other guy more down to earth. Lance looked at his now slightly windswept silver hair and perturbed expression, and realized with a pang that they would not have a lot of time together. After we pick up this fossil, we’ll probably have to go to our separate ways… I have my champion duties that I’m already putting off, and he has the same job as I do. It’s not easy taking road trips like this. He looked down at his hands, his expression soft. But we’ll think about parting when the time comes. For now, we should enjoy each other as long as possible.
“Because, truth be told… I have missed you. Quite a bit.”
Of course, it was partially Steven’s fault for issuing a challenge to the elite dragon trainer. He should’ve known that he would cheat he would take it seriously. On the other hand it was rare to see Lance reveal his more compassionate side like this. Lance had missed him? Truth is Steven has missed Lance too. "It’s not like you to get so soppy on me Lance." Steven retorted "but I can’t say I’m not happy to see you again." he smiled. The wind hitting his face was now far more gentle they weren’t speeding through the air at a hundred miles an hour. It was more relaxing and Steven felt like he could open up a bit more to Lance. "So" smiled Steven "I hear rumours on the grapevine that there may be a ladyfriend in your life? Care to comment?"
Lance turned a bit red. “Shut up… I was trying to have a serious moment there you know.” He grinned despite himself. “But it’s good to know I’m not the only one with a bit of a sentimental attachment."
“A lady friend, eh…” he sighed. “Truth be told, I have been trying, and failing, to get a date with Karen. That’s one thing I suppose the tabloids got right.” He lifted his hands up in resignation and shrugged. “Women, I tell you… I hope this is a hard to get act and not actual disinterest. I might be crushed. I’ve had a thing for her for the longest time." Lance glanced at his pokenav. Still a while to go til the first stop on their route… good. This was catchup time he didn’t want to miss a moment of.
“I swear though, if you confirm my little crush with the press, I’ll have dragonite hyper beam you. Literally. I haven’t really told anyone this before, so… don’t make me regret it.” He looked at Steven, coasting next to him gracefully on skarmory. “What about you? Hoenn tabloids have been confirming sightings of you with Jasmine… Any truth to that?” He adopted a mock stern expression. “She is a part of my league, after all. I can’t have in-work relationships getting in the way of responsibility."

Cinnabar | Lance & Kris
The mountain rumbled again. He imagined briefly the terror of two pokemon not being able to escape because of his misreading the situation. Two pokemon, dying at his hands. Please. Please let them be safe. ”What next, Lance?” Kris asked him. Hope was still within her. Now is not the time to despair. She still has faith in me. If I fail her, the island will burn. Homes will be destroyed. Maybe even lives… This cannot come to pass.
”Have your diggers follow me.” He sprinted towards an unpopulated beach at the volcano’s base he had found on another one of his trips. “The idea is,” he called over his shoulder, “to funnel the lava out the side of the mountain. Somewhere where there will be minimal damage to wildlife and lives.” Another rumble. They were becoming heavier, more frequent. This was not a good sign. Where are charizard and nidoqueen? A long, panicked screech answered him. His aerodactyl returned, carrying nidoqueen, but no charizard. NO. THIS CAN’T BE. Fear returned to him like a freight train. This is precisely what he was worried about when he sent them up to stop an eruption on their own. How could he have been so negligent?!
“Kris, I have to go up there. He might be hurt. My charizard will not drown in magma because of me.”
He leapt onto the great prehistoric dragon, and looked down at Kris. He realized with terror that he may not return. “Dig in the groove right at the fork of Pokemon Mansion trailhead. There’s a sign, you’ll find it.” I may never see her again. “Do as I say, and the lava shouldn’t hurt anyone. Assuming I’m not wrong about this particular class of eruption.” Say your goodbyes. He smiled sadly. “Wish me luck. See you on the other side.” He turned in the air and darted off towards the peak.
As they ascended, he wondered vaguely what he had meant by his parting words. The other side of what? This situation, or the afterlife? Wish I could’ve been more specific.
Following closely behind the dragon tamer, Kris kept her ears peeled for any instructions he might have to help subdue the eruption. He still seems to have a plan, she thought as she picked up the lingering hope being exchanged in his voice. Whatever it takes, I - we- cannot let him down. Both Vaporeon and Corsola galloped behind their trainer, reaching the two humans as Lance issued forth the ideas he’d been conjuring up.
"I-I think we can do that," she spoke somewhat hesitantly, glancing over and her confidence being reignited by the burning passion behind her Pokemon’s eyes. "I know, for sure, we can do it!” Kris smiled up towards Lance, who’s mind still seemed to be wandering about. She couldn’t help but feel the urge to console him, to inquire what it is that he was still doubting, but she found herself growing silent. Her silence was shaken the moment Aerodactyl ferried Nidoqueen to the premises, Kris overjoyed to finally have her Pokemon back and in good enough shape to assist her other diggers.
It was when Lance spoke up, that she finally realized the absence of Charizard. Horror shot through her spine, as she carefully followed Lance’s urgent change of plans. She couldn’t help but to be speechless as he took a leap onto his Aerodactyl, dead-set on searching for the missing Charizard. What do I do..?! She could only glance at him, her eyes urging him not to go but her mouth failing to articulate her own desires. There was no shaking Lance, however, and she knew that - when the man was set on something, nothing could pry him from that will. So, choking back her pleas, Kris gave the guy a stern nod, praying to herself for his safe return, and that watching him ascend towards the summit of the volcano wouldn’t be her last sight of him.
Lingering until he disappeared into the skies above, Kris then followed carefully the path Lance described, bringing her and her three Pokemon to the fork in the path facing the base of the volcano. The Pokemon hopped to work immediately, burrowing a canal towards the seashore and positioning themselves at the mouth of their passageway, ready to drill into the volcano. Nidoqueen began chipping the rock away, Corsola and Vaporeon soaking the earth and digging alongside.
Kris held her breath as she exchanged glances between her Pokemon and the mouth of the volcano up above. The tremors continued to grow in size, a horrible feeling churning within her gut as she replayed Lance’s final words in her mind. There was no choice but to remain diligent in the tasks at hand, but still, Lance had all but conquered her every thought.
Don’t look back. Save charizard. Don’t look back. Your friend is in danger. Don’t look back. See her again. Lance was numbly chanting the reminder in his head, over and over as Aerodactyl shot skyward. If he looked back, if he slowed even slightly, his focus would deviate from the very harsh reality that one of his longest standing battle partners and best friends could be lost as a result of his own lack of foresight. His grip tightened, and his face became solemn with focus. Though Kris threatened to dominate his thoughts, the danger of losing charizard kept him in the present. The thin stream of smoke was now a solid column.
After the short flight to the top of the mountain, Lance looked down into the basin, and his stomach plummeted. What greeted him was the glowing black and red of magma, rising slowly but surely out of the depths of the earth. This was going to cause damage on an enormous scale, should Kris’s end of the deal be impeded in some way. Somehow, seeing the danger with his own eyes jolted him into action as would being backed into a corner by a particularly wily challenger. His eyes narrowed, as he scanned for his Pokemon.
It didn’t take long. A pained roar jerked his gaze to the northern edge of the crater, where it looked as though a large boulder had been knocked from its perch and had pinned charizard’s left wing underneath it. Aerodactyl shot towards the wounded dragon, and landed nimbly next to him. Lance leapt off and started to examine him. The wing was broken, which was excruciating pain to endure. This is my fault. Sending two lone pokemon to plug up an eruption… what a horrible thing for a trainer to do. He did his best to brush the guilt aside, but then a second and more powerful wave swept over him. And not only my own… I sent Kris’s pokemon into the line of danger as well. How will she be able to forgive me… Another exclamation of pain from charizard. He wouldn’t be able to fly with this.
Lance reached for a pokeball for an assist to lift the boulder off, but his hand stopped. The boulder didn’t look terribly difficult to maneuver, it just had charizard in an awkward position to free himself. He and aerodactyl alone could do this… no other of his dragons need be involved. He wouldn’t put more lives in danger than he already had. His hand continued to his belt and in a deft motion he released his remaining team. “Kingdra, you go with dragonite. Salamence, carry haxorus. You all go help Kris at the trailhead.” They all looked at charizard concerned, and back at Lance. “Go! I have things here. This is my doing. If I’m consumed, aerodactyl can at least escape with charizard.” He swept his arm horizontally in dismissal, and turned to start working on the boulder. They reluctantly obeyed, flying off to Kris’s position. Dragonite groaned worriedly before disappearing over the lip of the basin.
Lance and Aerodactyl began to push, and to their relief the boulder came loose fairly easily and rolled away. There was a heavy splash about 20 seconds later, indicating the lava level was rising. Charizard roared in pain, but clambered to his feet. Lance patted him apologetically. “You won’t be able to fly with that, buddy… Aerodactyl. Take his left side.” They each got under one of his arms, and began to hike as quickly as possible, which was a fairly labored pace. Lance dared not turn around to check the progress of the volcano behind him.
I’m doing what I can here, team… Take care of Kris.

the fox and the dragon | Karen and Lance
“THIEF! WHERE IS SHE!? I KNOW THAT GIRL TOOK MY-“
Lance wheeled around, fingers barely having touched the heirloom before the screech broke the usual white noise of the city. She’s here. His eyes began darting around, searching for the hair his source had described. But that woman needs help, I don’t have time to be looking for- He inclined forward, as though preparing to sprint toward the source of the commotion. But then his pulse calmed. He didn’t move from the spot. Time slowed. Lance closed his eyes.
Once, when he was 6, the Elder took him to watch how a dragon could fall victim to rash overconfidence. This was to enforce the necessity of teaching ones own dragons temperance, and focus in the face of crisis. A mother Salamence was guarding her eggs, and they watched hidden as a Liepard caterwauled insultingly up at the nest. Its pride challenged, the great mother dragon swooped down and attempted to swipe at the cat, who retreated to where it was not visible, into the bushes. The Salamence, furious, began crushing them one by one. While she did, the Liepard stole the eggs and was gone before the mother even finished her wild rampage. The elder had told him, verbatim: “Never fall victim to subtle manipulation. You are one who commands power, and the clever will always consider the powerful to be bumbling, and unaware. You mustn’t allow them the satisfaction. See through what path someone is leading you to, and you may just avoid getting your eggs stolen.”
Lance opened his eyes. Time resumed. No, I can’t rush in… But I won’t find her by her hair. She wouldn’t dare be so obvious. But how do I lure her to me? He had an idea, suddenly. What if I do exactly what she thinks I will. If I go towards the victim at a run, the jewel will bobble around. If I just wait for the precise moment when it stops hitting my side, that’s the moment. That’s when I’ll have found her. That’s assuming I’m not far over thinking this, and it really just is a good old fashioned mugging. He had only hesitated a second or two from when he initially had motioned to start towards the small crowd; all of what had just run through his head had been considered in an instant. If he was to appear rash and without a plan, he couldn’t hesitate a moment longer. If she was around, she wouldn’t dare go for the jewel if she thought he was aware of the situation. He started to jog, then sprint.
”It’s alright ma’am!” He shouted. “Which way did she go?!”
Your move, clever Liepard.
Anticipation and thrill always came with the job, but this time? This time she felt it on an entirely new level. She was having fun. Controlling the board by dealing her hand carefully, she lured him right where she wanted him and certainly thought she could claim victory over this powerful man who others would have fled from. Not her. She welcomed him into her game, and caught his rapid movement towards her direction.
Well predicted, she straightened herself and witnessed the crowd parting to his sheer determination and will to help a complete and total stranger. She could see him now before her and the prize that dangled so carelessly from his pocket. He was about to press right by her, and she was ready for him.
Stepping to the side with ease, she glanced up at him, took him in as her fingers worked to snatch the prize from his pocket and exchanged it for the very necklace she had snatched from the woman and a piece of paper. The weight was different, but still a weight that swung at his side as he drove right into the crowd towards the woman.
He was the focus, the fool she wanted him to be as the crowd closed about him, pressing in to see what he would do and how he could possibly find this thief. What a hero~. She thought mockingly, craving to watch her trap spring on him as she walked in the opposite direction.
The woman, expectant of someone to come to her aid was quick to take to him. Over dramatic in her presentation, she even drew the back of her hand across her brow. “She came back from where you came! She had on a cap— oh you’ve just got to catch her for me! She took a very important necklace from me. It had more diamonds in it than you could imagine!” As she spoke light from the sun ran along those very diamonds at his side. Glittering in their brilliance it was easy to be drawn in by them; something Karen had been counting on for the woman looked down, and froze.
"Y—YOU!" Karen heard her bellow as she turned the corner, an amused laugh escaping at the foolish woman’s conclusion.
Out of the corner of her eye she could have sworn she caught her victim hurling her bags up into the air to smack Lance with them as she realized her hero must have been working with the thief. Whatever the case, it was giving her time to disappear and to keep her seeker rattled. The piece of paper she had left with him would see to that for scrawled elegantly along its crumpled surface it read: 'Thank you for the present, Dragon Tamer. I will cherish it always~.'
There it was. A slight shift in the timing of the relic drumming against his leg, as well as its weight. Right as he had passed a stunningly beautiful silver-eyed woman in a cap, who had moved to the side to let him pass. Hello, Karen. She had even gone so far as to replace the necklace with a fake, he assumed. She really was a gifted thief. Had he not been focusing all of his mental energy on that spot on his hip, he would have missed it completely.
Lance reached the rich woman who had just been robbed. "She came back from where you came! She had on a cap—" Bingo. so that definitely was her in the hat. "oh you’ve just got to catch her for me! She took a very important necklace from me. It had more diamonds in it than you could imagine!” At that exact moment a few flecks of brilliant light crossed her face. "Y-YOU!" The woman said, expanding like a qwilfish. Me? What about- wait a minute. The light that had just crossed her face... He looked down and his eyes widened. Karen hadn't replaced the crest with a copy... she had replaced it with the stolen necklace.
"Wait a minute ma'am, I-" WHUMP. His words were cut short by a great frilly purse pummeling him in the side of the head. The impact was soft, but very weighted. What's she carrying in there, skitty food?! “MA'AM.” he said with his voice slightly raised, blocking a second strike from the fluffy assault. "See reason, please! I didn't steal this from you. I'm the league champion, not a common thief." He removed the necklace from his hip, and his fingers touched a piece paper. One he had not put in his pocket. He held the necklace over her handbag and dropped it in before darting toward where he remembered the direction the silver-eyed girl had been walking in. “HEY- I’M NOT FINISHED WITH YOU YET!” the woman bellowed behind him. “I’m sorry for the trouble ma’am, but I really don’t have time for this!” He called over his shoulder, hoping there weren’t any paparazzi present in the road. The last thing he needed was a theft scandal. He pulled out the piece of paper as he ran, and found it to be a note from Karen. 'Thank you for the present, Dragon Tamer. I will cherish it always~.'
Lance couldn't help but crack a small smile, though his eyebrows were furrowed with intense concentration. Glad you like it. He thought, pulling out his PokeNav. This particular one was a special design from the head of Devon Corp., and it was about to come very much in handy. The Town Map app on this one was not just a map. There was a GPS tracker that connected to a small signaling device, usually used for vehicles should they be misplaced or stolen. The program was viewable on a live satellite feed with a red dot showing the tracker’s location. The small signal device was not in a vehicle though… it was hidden within the crest. He had the PokeNav zoom in on his current position, and sure enough- a blinking red light hovered over a capped figure right off Main Street, swiftly walking through an alleyway.
He wasn't sure if she knew he could see her, but up to this point she had pretty much been one step ahead the whole way. He released his aerodactyl and told it to tail her from the air, and to let him know if she disappeared to a place not visible from above. “Don’t let her see you." he said, as it stealthily took to the sky. He slowed, staying out of earshot and following her at a safe distance. Just where are you off to, anyhow...

"One is (not to kill a cliche) Karen. Hands down. Eh… number two is probably Dahlia from Sinnoh/Johto’s Battle frontiers. She’s one of the most confident women I’ve ever seen." FMK: Steven, Elesa, Dragonite
Lance bowed his head, resigned. This game again. Can’t believe I agreed to answer something like this truthfully. Looking up, he said,”Well, first of all… You can count dragonite out of being killed. I could never kill my best friend. But that first option… I would never EVER do with a pokemon. So I guess… marry dragonite?” He shuddered. “Ugh, that’s odd to say in that order. It would definitely be platonic, because that’s just…. ugh. As for Elesa, I don’t really know her. Not that that’s grounds for killing a person, but I couldn’t kill Steven.” His eyes widened. “Wait, so that leaves…” He turned bright red. “Don’t get any ideas. I’m not like that! I’m NOT. I swear. Not that there’s anything wrong with people who are, but it’s just not me.” He looked at the ground, still blushing fiercely. “I’m not.” He muttered, fidgeting with his cape fastening with one hand.
