It's the humanity in these places that gets me. Evidence that people tried to recover what was lost. Quiet moments frozen in time. A game of soccer on a cracked road. Lovers holding hands looking out to the west. Notes, poems, scribbles of hope and desperation. Violence is there too. Scattered shell casings. Energy burns in plaster. Skeletons. But people tried to find a life; to scratch out something after the world died. It's something I guess.
Do you remember when the bombs fell? Were you old enough? Did you see the flash, feel the impact in your teeth?
It's hard, now, to remember things before. I'm pretty sure the sun is even different now, somehow.
I dunno. Sometimes the quiet makes me remember things. I don't like that.
I'm not from here. These mountains are old, ancient. I'm from the south and I clawed my way out of the swamp and mud to be here. Maybe I don't belong here but who really does. We were given a second chance after the bombs. I think that maybe this place is for that; second chances, redemption. Maybe none of it matters. I guess I'll see.
