“I’m glad to hear you agree with me.” Wilder didn’t dislike modernity, he just thought that people in general were soft. He wouldn’t tell Ines that he thought she was a little soft too, since she’d probably smack him. Softness was a luxury that he envied rather than despised. It was a sign of developmental growth. “You know, your ears turn pink when you lie. Don’t worry, I know you’re too worried about ruining our mutual disrespect by admitting you lust after me. I can keep a secret.” He caught the pillow and tucked it behind his head. He suspected she needed some sort of comfort, but he wouldn’t have known how to offer it to her, even if he was inclined to. She was prickly as a porcupine, and he suspected it would require the sort of gifts that Zach possessed and he lacked to help her. All the better that Zach was pack leader and had to worry about those sorts of things. “There’s nothing wrong with being a snob, it just means you have discriminating tastes.” Wilder had grown up in Virginia, living up in the mountains with the poor coal miners. He’d hardly been born with a silver spoon in his mouth. But he still liked nice things. “Everyone needs Zach’s help. The question is, why do you need his help? I can’t let just anyone have at him, the man’s soft as puppy shit, blink your big beautiful eyes at him and he’ll melt. I, thankfully, am made of sterner stuff.”
“Don’t get used to it chuckles --- its’ bound to be a one time thing.“ Ines drawled, gaze crystalline irises narrowing to slits at his next comment. “Well that has to be the biggest line of bullshit I’ve heard come out of that mouth of yours, second to the idea I could ever lust after you of course. You’re mother must have dropped you from a great height as a child. Certainly explains the crooked nose..” She remarked, lips twitching into something akin to a smirk as she narrowed her gaze in his direction as if to be studying his features. Though it irked her, that he had picked up on one of her fatal flaws already. The young Malraux had always kept her cards close to her chest, she prided herself on her poker face but alas, she had never been a good liar. Which was apparently more obvious than she knew. She was being foolish, that much was obvious, and already in the space of a few moments she had said too much, put herself into a position of vulnerability ---- a place she refused to go, to ask for help. Instead the blonde shook her head, offering a laugh in return. It had always been second nature to revert to sarcasm or a subject change to avoid any moment of sincerity or better said, weakness. “You’re kidding right?” She couldn’t help but laugh at that. “The man’s a mundane version of grumpy cat, puppy shit on the other hand sounds like a much better description for you, unless of course you’d prefer troglodyte, maybe clawless hermit? Hell, all I had to do was bat my big beautiful eyes in your direction and you let me inside, gave out the goods even.” She remarked, tone dripping with sarcasm as she motioned to the beer in her hand. “If you were made of sterner stuff I doubt we’d be sat here, besides, how are you to know I’m not the big bad killer, hmm?”
