I think it's also because Alex Hirsch was hit with censorship himself. I don't mean ships, I mean Disney was forcing him to make numerous changes, sometimes for mostly absurd reasons.

For example, he talked about how Disney was against him making up his own rhyme (There once was a man from Kentucky) because the original rhyme (there once was a man from Nantucket) he was referencing was dirty, but he wondered how would people would logically get "fucky" out of "Kentucky"

Or they also tried to censor the word "poopface" because it was apparently a replacement for "shitface", but in a previous episode the same character mentioning the word "poop" and "butts" was fine??

And they also thought "Hoo-ha" was slang for vagina. Not a proper word for excitement.
