Pediatrician ALASTAIR + DEAN for @alaynestone's birthday!
SUPERNATURAL | S4 EP9 : I Know What You Did Last Summer | part 2/3
this body language speaks all the volumes the audience needs to know... the fact we have this and "i looked everywhere for you, and when dad came home..." both moments in the same season, yeah
"Somewhere along the line I stopped being your father and I became your drill sergeant." (John 4x21)
yeah it should’ve been so much worse for dean in regards to being michael’s vessel.
The second the word god or jesus came out of his mouth, ESPECIALLY if its a swear, his ears should’ve started ringing. he can feel something watching him out of the corner of his eye, randomly, when he takes a sip of alcohol at a bar, flirts with a woman, walks down a dark street alone. Flames of every candle or fire he starts in a graveyard lean towards him. Pious catholics start reaching out to touch him on the street for no reason. Dreams where he’s held in place and forced to watch the creation of universes, glowing, burning holy light consuming him. He forces himself to go out every night like normal to hook up, but he starts feeling dirtier every time. Whispers in his ear throughout the day of his name, the lord’s prayer, yes yes yes yes. Doesn’t he know how perfect he is, how loved? Unwelcome, unnatural peace the second he walks into a church. He’s so empty, why not just sit and pray for a while, rest those weary eyes and hands. i could go on
Oh yes, this makes me think of the two of them, each with symptoms, side effects, whatever, of being perfect vessels.
Sam, the pious one, walks into a church and his skin itches. He feels agitated and even more unclean and unworthy than ever. But he quietly finds a place and sits, then kneels, and then prays. The priests and pastors always smile kindly at him, this tall young man desperately trying to fold in on himself and looking at them with guilt haunted eyes, seeking absolution and redemption.
Dean, who fancies himself a rebel, but is so good at following orders, hates being in churches because they're boring, nothing's happening in there. They're too calm, too peaceful. Hard to be a hero on hallowed ground. But in bars and strip clubs, back alleys and truck stops, he's on full alert, which lets him really take it all in. And the people there can't take their eyes off him. They all want a piece of this young man in rough and tumble clothes with the face of an angel.
I look at myself in the mirror. These are my arms, my shoulders, hands… I used to know my hands as strong and fast and lethal, and I’ve always thought that’s enough for male hands. I mean… they are, yes. But now I’d add, they are full of care, also. Even gentle. They’re good for so many things, I didn’t even realize they are so good.

there is interesting johndean subtext and insinuations across kripke era, usually through an antagonist insinuating parent-child sexual violence in order to exert dominance over dean. this type of mockery exploits that ambiguous relationship between john and dean and reminds dean that he never had a normal relationship with his father, and that makes him gross and wrong. it doesn't actually matter in the end whether john was sexually abusive to dean. the core of their relationship was damning enough: dean was made to take the place of john's wife—to comfort john and raise sam—while simultaneously being his son. the codependent nature of their relationship implies the incest that underscores their dynamic. again, this is regardless of what literally occurred between dean and john because there is enough doubt toward the nature of their relationship that multiple antagonists can use it against them.
sonwife, brotherhusband—dean is stuck in a liminal space between family and lover and is unable to put his feet firmly on just one side and instead has to accept both together or abandon both together. he doesn't get to have a relationship with his family without it being simultaneously incestuous. he plays the role of wife to john and mother to sam as mary's replacement; he therefore becomes more than a son and transcends the boundaries of the familial into the incestuous. it's baked into the dynamic and he can't hope to escape the liminality in which he's stuck without abandoning his entire family altogether.
this ambiguous relationship is further acted out with sam, where people perceive them as lovers rather than brothers; where their mutual devotion trumps, neglects, and disallows any other close relationship outside each other; where their physical closeness is viewed through an unusually sexual lens despite no literal sex acts between them taking place on screen. once again dean is stuck in a liminal space, paralleling the ambiguous and uncertain relationship he had with john.
in the end, sex (and sexual violence) is just a symbol of this codependency and uncertainly incestuous dynamic. sex acts in kripke era end up being symbolic: misinterpretations of sam and dean's relationship; accusations of sexual violence; literal, on-screen sexual moments between the brothers and someone else. it's a literary device that highlights the incestuous themes of the show. dean hand-picks women for sam to fuck because it allows dean to be symbolically part of sam's sex life. henricksen accuses john of raping dean because it is a symbol of the unhealthy, codependent relationship dean had with his father. the samulet stays on during sex because sam is symbolically integral to dean's sexual gratification (seen too in the way both dean and cassie in 1.13 appear to kiss the amulet at least once in the dark room). sex is used to signify more than what's literally on the screen, and the connections between the literal sex acts and the blurred lines of dean's familial relationships allow for a reading of incest between both john and dean and sam and dean.
it never mattered whether johndean or samdean had a sexual relationship in the canon because that was never the point. the point is the liminality that permeates the narrative. sam, dean, and john all stand upon a threshold between acceptable and taboo. the point of it all is the doubt and anxiety, the are-they-aren't-they that is never answered. the absence of incest within the text invites the understanding that the incest was, in fact, always there.

Asking your own brother to fund your fingering sessions is crazyyyyy
i bet you 22 yr old dean winchester doesn’t go an hour without thinking about how weak he is. couldn’t make dinner for sam that one day in 1991. missed the shot and got dad injured in 1993. sammy fucking LEFT for COLLEGE, what kind of well-taken care of child does that??? dad didn’t want to hunt with him after that:(. and now he isn’t even answering my calls.
now imagine all this compounded with being blamed for your dads death, the apocalypse, and the corruption/loss of the one good thing in your life (sam). yeah. i would have some issues too
one of my favorite underrated spn themes is dean being ‘weak’, especially weaker than sam.
his perceived weakness is one of the main conflicts of seasons 3-5. Dean has to struggle with the fact he ‘broke’ in hell, and is victim blamed by everyone EVEN SAM for it. sam is seduced and manipulated into thinking dean cannot save himself, only sam can. Thus the demon blood. this is all backed up by their past relationships with john: dean couldn’t leave him, even for his own good, while sam made the decision to leave and ‘become his own man’.
this is why they are such interesting characters. Dean’s apparent machismo is consistently subverted and challenged. The main conflict of Season 5 ends, not with a big fight, but with dean letting lucifer!sam beat him to a pulp. Sam overcomes lucifer because there is power in Dean’s consistent loyalty and love. traits he has consistently been scorned for throughout the show.
anyways these are just my randomly scribbled down monday thoughts, but I love dean so so much. the character depth, the complexity, the narrative followthrough!! sometimes spn really does hit
if i was growing up with him as an older brother slash mother figure i would have developed a weird psychosexual obsession with him too. tbh
No one's possessing me, Dean. This is what I'm going to become. This is what I want to become. There's nothing you can do about it. Y E L L O W FEVER — 4.06
the only way i can picture dean as a dog is as that one scared and anxious shelter misfit, who is terrified of all other dogs but is the sweetest most loyal baby ever to any person who walks in front of his kennel.
