this is my fandom sideblog. i enjoy literary analysis, and i like writing longform posts about my thoughts and opinions. i also write fics. (mostly i'm just bad at shutting up)

i mostly post about the terror and supernatural right now since they have consumed my brain. i tag everything i post by series, so please feel free to mute tags to avoid any spam! please note: i am currently enjoying the feel of grass, so i'm rather inactive. however, this blog isn't abandoned and you are still free to interact with me. i check my activity and my inbox regularly!

i have a specific tag for my supernatural meta, analysis, essays, and comparatives (some of which are occasionally contained in the tags). i consider myself a samgirl, but i post a lot about both sam and dean (and i am a wincest girlie). i'm also a fan of the winchester family dynamics as a whole. i enjoy the show under the interpretation that sam is the primary protagonist of supernatural and much of the story is told through his biased perspective; that he did everything wrong; and that this is specifically what makes him a good and compelling character. i'm mostly interested in exploring the story as it pertains to theme of fate versus family and focus primarily on what story contents engage with that theme. peace and love 💖 read my episode notes on neocities!

this is just a short about me/the blog section for those who care to know.

i'm an adult, i'm queer, and i am deeply fascinated by the grotesque and disturbing. i'm a big fan of gothic horror, tragedy, and bitter endings. i might come off a bit pretentious about the art i engage with, but i generally try to be funny about it and i do love trashy/campy/badly written art under a wide range of circumstances.

for the majority of my own posts, i don't consider anything in supernatural beyond season 5 to be "canon" in the sense that it affects my understanding or analysis of the show as envisioned by eric kripke. i still enjoy some of the show post-season 5 and may occasionally discuss/analyze/post about it; i just think of it as equivalent to fanfiction.

my ships are not necessarily romantic or sexual in nature. feel free to consider them as such though, because i will certainly talk about them using romantic or sexual language as the boundary to me is irrelevant. i tend to gravitate toward codependent relationships, and i really like otherwise unhealthy, fucked up, and toxic dynamics and portraying them as such.

i'm by and large more story- or dynamic-oriented than i am character-oriented, and while i may have characters i'm more fond of in a work than others it really doesn't make much tangible difference. i'm also kind of long-winded (no shit sherlock). anyway i hope this is helpful; thanks for reading :)

Stories often use their characters as mouthpieces for the narrative and/or the writer, and I am fascinated by the Terror's take on this, because the characters are so often wrong.

For example, consider the conversation between Blanky and Francis in episode 7, when they are about to abandon the ships. Blanky tells a story about the time the Terror almost sank only to come thru in the end and concludes about the present day "she may well triumph" with perfect sincerity of belief. In another show, one can imagine the Terror coming thru for the walking men just when all hope seemed lost, following a thaw. And yet, we know even as Blanky says those words, that the ship is doomed--it will never sail again.

And this keeps happening through out the show. Bridgens tells Peglar about the men who found themselves in hostile country in Persia, who "walked for hundreds and hundreds of miles through desert and snow, with no food," and survived, when we know they very much so will not. Lady Jane speaks with utmost conviction about being able to feel Sir John calling to her when we know that Sir John is long dead. The examples go on and on.

The most interesting thing this does is that it makes statements that would otherwise be read as the writer's ultimate verdict on the topic into these beautifully nuanced and ambivalent things. For example, Bridgens tells a dying Fitzjames that he was a good man. Was he? He who is being poetically killed by the ghost of a Chinese sniper whose worth he once equated to a roasted duck? Is self-awareness and remorse enough to make up for that when it makes no tangible difference in the real world?

Francis tells Goodsir that "even if God is seeing every last thing we do here, you have nothing to fear. Not you. You're clean, Goodsir. Clean--even if your hand is forced by swine." Such a resounding statement which in any other context would have absolved Goodsir of everything he has done. But does it? Goodsir certainly does not accept the absolution himself, and his suicide is...something.

I could go on, and I am not saying that as a result Goodsir is damned and James an awful man--rather that I love the way we are invited to interrogate these verdicts and decide for ourselves.

I'm sorry but the POINT is that Dean wasn't good at raising sam.

Sam is salty about this ofc, which is why he gives Dean so much shit about not being good with kids even when he is actually great with them. the idea is that Dean Winchester, while being his brother's primary caretaker at most times, was still a borderline (canonically?) abused child. He made fun of Sam the way older brothers do, he got annoyed of Sam, he'd leave Sam to go "out."

He didn't do a good job at teaching Sam valuable things like "sharing is caring" or whatever but he kept Sam alive. He remembers that part of his childhood, which is why Sam is literally the most precious thing he has. Sam, on the other hand, remembers growing up with his jerk brother and an absent father instead of all the things dean had to do to keep him alive ((proved in the early flashback with the shtriga)), which is why he's so keen on just leaving.

None of their faults btw they love eachother to pieces but Sam didn't have the best childhood and Dean had no choice but to leave his behind.
