The difference of how the potion is presented between movie and musical is really interesting to me. In the movie, Lisle emphasizes regaining your youth, she laments that it's so fleeting and beautiful and her stated goal, and the way the potion works, is to stop age and reverse it, to let Madeline slip back into her golden years and be everything she was when she was twenty.

In the musical, and especially If You Want Perfection, Viola leans more in the direction of being something more than you used to, something new and better. "You have immense potential, you just haven't found it yet" "Kill your old complexion" "Welcome to your brand new skin", even the title; if you want perfection, not youth, not beauty, but something you could never have had before.

I feel like the musical does a better job of playing into Madeline (and by extension society's) rose coloured lense of the past and youth. Madeline had never really been happy, she's still insecure and bitter over not being invited to parties in high school, she's dedicated decades to making one of her only friends miserable because she's so desperate for her approval. She has never been content with herself, but she thinks, and Viola encourages her to, that if she can just be young again, then this time she'll do it right, this time she'll accomplish whatever impossible feat will make her perfect.
