So Matilda’s strong young mind continued to grow, nurtured by the voices of all those authors who had sent their books out into the world like ships on the sea.
Matilda (1996) dir. Danny Devito
Don't worry, I love getting recommended books that normally wouldn't be on my radar because it keeps my mind fresh and I never know what new interest is just waiting for me to discover it! It's also nice to be well rounded as a writer so I don't always sound the same to anyone reading my work.
I've always been a fan of romance, fantasy, and psychological thrillers, bonus points if a book is able to be all three at once and is able to pull it off convincingly. But like I said, I'll dabble in just about anything at least once because I love discovering new authors.
Fantastic. Then you and I should get along very well, I think. Because there are many books I would recommend. And you, too, of course, I'm all ears! Or eyes. Seeing as we are online! I think so. It is good to be open minded, absolutely. I certainly agree, absolutely.
What works do you have out?
I do find that an enjoyable combination. Certainly fantasy is one of those that take up plenty of my library. I won't lie.
Have a wallet I'm giving away. Seems like it's nice. Probably expensive. Someone can have it for free.
Oh I've been looking for one. I wanted to experiment on something like that, with a new hobby I'm picking up. I'm working on embossing and debossing in leather.
[pm] Do you overthink in like, an anxious way? It was never like that for me. But now that we're talking about hobbies... I do try to fill up my time with lotsa thing just so my head's too busy, don't I? I mean, I do it cause the hobbies are fun too, obvi. I think learning to play the drums has been one of my favorite things I've done since coming here. But yeah... I didn't realize I was doing that. [user has done this since the beginning of times]
Hm, that's a good question. Like, their weirdness is nothing that's making people unsafe or uncomfy, I don't see why you should tell someone they're weird? Especially if they can't help it. Unless you mean in like a compliment way, then you just say exactly that. You're weird, I like you. You got this babe, you can get out of the house more.
They ARE lovely, you're so correct. That's my bone partner, literally no better person in this whole universe.
Hey, I'm also a huge fan of getting all my life lessons through media! And those look like excellent choices for ya.
Mm, not a fan of the campy, we did this poorly on purpose kinda movie? Oooh, I think I've seen most of those, I defo agree, none of them felt like cheap with the stakes. That stories are what makes people root for the characters or not!
[PM] Yeah, I guess. Other people seem to trigger it, at times, overthinking. So, I guess anxiety, too. lol People can be very concerning, you know? It's hard to know what they are thinking. And sometimes, I think, it's not always the best thoughts. Like, a best friend could be conspiring against me. Laying in wait to sabotage me when the opportunity ever presents itself. Everything I say, will be held against me. Isn't that something worth being anxious about?
Really? I like to sing a little. Never have I thought to take up an instrument, though. Not seriously. I think as long as something makes us happy, it's hard to realize it's distracting us from the bad things. What other hobbies have you distracted yourself with?
I guess people will point out flaws they imagine in others, to make themselves feel better. It's probably all just projection. They see a version of another person, and maybe they think they have it good, this other person. So, calling them in their happiness, weird, or something, takes away from that person's shine. But it doesn't add to the name callers, now does it, to take away another person's happiness. Not enough people have seen Mean Girls, and absorbed it's main point, properly. Calling someone else stupid, doesn't make you smarter. You know? I bet a lot of people's takeaway was to write a private journal gossiping about other people behind their back, rather than communicating your feelings, or learning the other perspective. You think it would be exhausting being a jerk to most of the people around you? That's what I learned watching the movie. It's a great movie, anyway, if you haven't seen it. But I got the sneaking suspicion you might have!
Aw. Well, I enjoy the conversations your bone partner and I have had. That makes them great in my books!
Yeah! What other reason to watch anything, to participate in anything, than to consume and learn from it? What is it all for if it doesn't change you, even slightly, in the end?
Well, I am. But not often. It has to sit just right. I guess, I enjoy the genre so much that, I'm a bit of a Goldilocks about it. You know? Right! I don't want to watch another Scream, just because, wow, people are getting stabbed again. Or, another movie where there's a final girl, there's always a final girl. And you know who she is from the start! You're lucky if her boyfriend dies, by the end! It's just, not great, lately. The horror genre is in such a mess these days. And you're absolutely right, the stories make us want the good guys to win, or should? I guess. But I find, especially with horror, I want the bad guy to win, just so the good guys shut up.
Dude, what the fuck are you even saying right now? I'm not going to sit here and try to decipher whatever this is.
What? What's so confusing about me telling you I know where you can find chains? I don't think I was being that confusing, come on.
I have heard that about some gnomes, but thankfully this one's not one of them! Having the multiplying property is OBJECT 2998's whole thing and I still have to track that one down another day. Oh yeah, I remember that, I would keep the gnomes and they would just spawn seeds in my house. I made a lot of money in that game doing that.
Of course! And maybe we should do this in the daytime? Lessen the creepiness factor of trying to grab it? Don't want to get attacked by an animal in the dark either. Or anything else for that matter.
Have you? Oh! On The Sims! Right! I love that game. Making characters from my favorite media is always fun. Yeah! So much fun.
The daytime? Okay. That would be a better time to do things.
Question! What are we doing in the daytime?
Yeah, ain't nothing wrong with a bit of mud. But maybe I'm biased, having grown up in a bayou. :)
Oh yeah? You farming their honey or just doing it for the joy of getting stung?
[pm] I didn't lea-- I told you to get to my cabin. You weren't able. And I wasn't able to help. We both had our own shit going on. [...] So you really don't remember nothing other than that?
Right! Yeah! I grew up in Kansas. But I get it. Sometimes you just got to get a bit dirty.
I guess you could say it's a little bit of both. Honey's coming either way. Going to get stung either way. Hahaaaha
[PM] I don't know why I wouldn't be? Other than that pain in my spine I had when I was watching you walk away. What were you doing that you couldn't? I wouldn't think you did something to hurt me, Wyatt, you know? But I do remember you walking away. And what is that, if not leaving? No? What? Is there more than that?
[pm] OH! That's one way to do it. LOL! I used to be good at that, well not the ignoring it, but that too. Just like... I was good at speedrunning everything and then locking back in. Now it's like... my head is always going over things. I wonder if this is why some people are so anxious and stuff. This can't be good for anyone. I do like busying myself with hobbies too. That keeps the thoughts away.
There's no such things as too weird for Wicked's Rest. I'm telling ya. I know your people are right there, excited to meet you. I'm not much of a bug person, but my partner has beetles, maybe you should talk to her about it. [user links Regan's account]
I totes agree with that sentiment. We should be on an estrict ego boot diet, imo.
I'm sorry, babe. They sound like boring people, and also kinda like teenagers. We'll find our inside joke, it's just gonna come naturally.
What's a good unpredictable horror movie? I've always been a little iffy on horror movies, you know, sometimes with the gore and stuff. [user is a hunter]. But also the overuse of jump scares. Like, enough! That can't be your only trick!!!!
[PM] I think it's one of the better ways to deal with it, yeah. Oh! Really? I love locking in. So great! I think overthinking is definitely going to lead a lot of people to that. Overthinking is great, most of the time. But, I also overthink, a lot. I agree, if you have a lot to do, you don't have to think about stuff.
Yeah. I didn't think there was. But there could be a couple here and there in town who think they aren't weird. Which leads to such conversations. How do you break it to someone that they are weird, in that kind of situation? I guess, for me, I just need to stop hiding out at my house. Which I'm trying to work on. It's going...so so.
Oh! I know them! We've talked about a couple things here and there. They're lovely! So that's your bone partner!
Yeah, a well-nourished ego has to be a good thing. We need our egos, after all. Makes us more of who we are in the end.
Yeah, a little. But you find that a lot these days, with adults. I've been an adult long enough to know where to put my money and attention. Lion King. Naruto. One Piece. And The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. They have taught me all I've needed to know about being an adult.
But yes! I believe in us finding that inside joke.
I really like horror movies. But I like good ones, way more than bad ones. The one's that are too gory more so leans on the bad one's. 28 Days Later. The Ring. Ghost Ship. Scream Final Destination The Mist. IT Identity Alien. The Crow. Tremors. Darkness Falls. There are many great options that are not just gory or jumpscares constantly. Or poorly placed jumpcares. I love some of the stories of some of them, I know that's not important to most horror movie fanatics. But to me, there's something about lore drops, on top of the creeping horror.
[... ... ...] Dude, did you take something? What is wrong with you? I'm not even going to try to decipher any of that.
[pm] Whatever you're saying isn't funny. Just nonsense. Get better jokes, tbh.
Are you trying to be like an oracle of Delphi by yammering on in gibberish and acting nuts? You gonna predict something instead? Tell me the future.
Well don't bring it up first and I won't mention it. Ugh. Thought it was your kink, weirdo! And I am so not getting into the details of all my kinks right now. Buy me a couple drinks first.
[...] Soaking the earth with their excrement? What exactly are you doing in your yard, Bellamy? I don't usually encourage going beyond some jump scares. But, hey, like live your life you know? Though [...] if you're doing more than a jump scare, it's probably a bad idea to record that.
Gotta be so real with you, I think I need to take an edible to keep up with this conversation.
I don't think so? Nothing is wrong with me. I honestly didn't see anything on that Gobf planet. I swear!
[PM] I never said it was funny? My nightmares are really bad experiences. I'm not joking, Sawyer!
Why would I want to be an oracle or anything like it? Not only is that like, having some kind of god complex. But, I try and avoid people. If I start having prophetic dreams, won't that mean I have to interact with more people? People who will want to start coming around and having me tell them their fish is going to die. I'm not ready to be Bruno!
But, you know, that's pretty mean to call me nuts. I thought we were friends. I don't feel comfortable telling someone anything when they just expressed that they think I'm nuts.
Why are we talking about this? Kinks, I don't have kinks like that! This is a weird conversation, I'm going to skip it, if you don't mind.
I'm growing a garden and tending to my bees, not...excrement? Why would you bring that into it. Of course, there is some fertilizers... I don't plan on doing any jump scares, though? For what reason is that any good for me?
Okay. I guess since you think I'm crazy, that makes sense.
I have not! I just looked it up and it looks like a fun read, I'm definitely going to give it a shot!
Is science fiction your favorite genre?
I would recommend it to anyone, to try reading just once. I think it's that fun of a book! I hope you like it, in the end! But, don't feel a need to, if you don't! I could also suggest other books.
It is a favorite, yeah. I like a lot of them, in that genre. Do you have favorite genres you like to read in?
Does anyone have any book recommendations? I've read everything on my list and I've even gone back and reread some of my favorites in my free time; I need something new and exciting.
Have you read The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy yet?
That would be great! Would save me some time on the search in the long run.
And yeah, if you don't want to get near it again, I completely understand. I'll handle it once you point me in the right direction. Honestly keeping some distance from it is probably for the best . I'll meet you in there!
I figured it would! We must contain that freaky little thing, as soon as possible! Please! Before they multiply. I heard lawn gnomes do that. I've seen it in a game somewhere. Slims, I t was called.
Thank you for understanding. I will meet you there, then. What time shall we have this? I would like to not have to be left waiting. Something might eat me. It is the woods after all. There's a lot going on in the woods here. Besides this unfortunate gnome appearing.
