meanwhile I am seeing tons and tons of tweets saying "GIRL nobody gaf about Victor Frankenstein's college YAOI" with thousands of notes, "it's way better that she made Lizzy a human being than the cutout she was in the book". okay but he still could not conceive the alternative of making Elizabeth more complex without her being the mom-lover who is the only one who can feel drawn towards the monstrous because she is White Woman. when it could be argued that Henry could have taken the role of feeling sympathy for something that is rejected and feared instead. Something that he does show do Victor in the book, and would have made his role more complex if he had felt sympathy for both creator and creation now. It wouldn't have been difficult either, given that he was in the actual vicinity of Victor's lab.
Sorry that this went unanswered for 50 years, but it's always time to complain about GDTstein
If they were going to make one of the Creature's murder victims sympathetic to him, this sounds like a much better option because a) it doesn't give me the skin-crawling feeling of a *romantic* arc between a woman and the man who murdered her, and b) it could have emphasized the parallels between Victor and the Creature. I love analysis that notes how the Creature is a sort of personification/exaggeration of Victor's own flaws and fears, in both a Generational Trauma way and a repression way, and having a character notice this parallel would be interesting.
That said, I do think that having *anyone* feel instinctual sympathy for the Creature undermines the most important part of the story. The message of having to tell your instinct to shut up and *choose* to see someone as a person is so radical that it practically never survives adaption. They'd only need to keep Robert Walton's role of hearing the story and making that choice to preserve it!
