DC #542: Jason & Bruce are Separated

OK, fair warning: this one is emotionally heavy. May possibly be triggering in regards to child/parent forced separation, foster care, that sort of thing. 

Here’s what happens: 

This is intense for everyone. 

But Bruce steps up, calls his lawyers, and gets busy getting Jason back. It’s one of my favorite Bruce, not Batman, but Bruce moments from these comics.

Bruce’s speech: 

“I possess and control more money than any thousand people could reasonably spend in very long lifetimes. But I’m telling you that tonight-right now-all of it, every ming vase, every last penny of it right down to the upholstery in your limousines is worthless. It means nothing to me. I wouldn’t shed a single tear if it all vanished this very second. 

Yet for one solid hour this afternoon…after they came and took Jason away from me…I broke down and wept. That’s what we’re discussing here. Money is fine, gentlemen, but it isn’t real. 

Right now only Jason is real. I want that boy back and i will accept neither defeat nor failure. Everything you see around you, including yourselves and the trappings of your salaries, doubled. As of this minute every last penny of everything at my disposal goes into the effort. But…but…the effort must be clean, honest, and performed to the letter of the law. 

Now, any questions? Good. Then let’s get down to business.”

And to top it off:

That’s the first night Batman doesn’t answer the bat-signal.  

Well, not at first anyways. He goes out later, only to find one (1) scrappy tiny child in a Robin costume along the way. 

Jason tells Batman that he’s not giving up either, and he wants to keep being Robin even if he can’t be Jason Todd, Bruce’s ward. They leave separately to go their respective houses until the case gets settled. 

Overall, this one is painful, but sets up a delightful story for Jason and Bruce. 

And of course, in the end Bruce does get Jason back :)
